Find MP3s of these songs and give them an honest chance:
1. "Orion", from Master of Puppets 2. "To Live Is To Die", from ... And Justice For All 3. "One", from ... And Justice For All
I've been a fan of Metallica's pre-Load stuff for a long time, and I admit that I initially shared the "WTF is Metallica doing at 'Roo!" sentiment. Listening to these songs today, however, forced me to revisit that and entertain the idea that they might, if they're lucky, pull off a solid set on the farm in June.

I like Pre-Black Album Metallica, but their show live sucks now. I saw them perform Master of Puppets, and James made the crowd sing the chorus, his vocals sucked otherwise, and it was a 3 minute pop bullshit version. Just no.

The band that made those songs is not the band playing the weekend of June 13th, sadly.
If you don't like them, don't see them. Simple as that. It's not as if that 3% of the weekend is going to ruin the other 97% for you. I'm not a fan of Dave Matthews. But that didn't stop me from going when he played, nor did it stop me from enjoying the rest of my weekend... Go take a nap at your campsite and rest up for the late-nights, or check out the comedy tent.
It was mentioned that Metallica isn't what they once was. On that basis, why no similar extent of Pearl Jam backlash? bonnaroo.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=vote&action=display&thread=1200379532 Blue Room poll shows about 70% of you out there think their prime is fifteen years behind them too, but I don't see anybody bitching about that.
I'd be curious to know how many of you anti-Metallica people were anti-Tool people this time last year...

Here's the thing. Pearl Jam isn't past their prime. They still rock as hard as ever if not harder. Also. Tool is completely different from Metallica. They're an art rock band, a band that seems to do things for the right reasons, not for the money.
i don't understand the comparison between metallica and tool. they're not even close to being in the same league. i was skeptical about tool last year, but i was open to it b/c i could hear elements in their music that i could appreciate. metallica doesn't do that for me. not hating on them...just my personal taste. nobody is going to like everything. with that said, i have no problem using that time to get some R&R campside and prepare for a crazy late night.
I'm at work right now...doing it for the money....and I think artists should be paid for their work...and I respect the hell out of people that stand up for themselves even if it's not popular to do so....
Also...I love when people have no idea what they're talking about....the same people that think Metallica is too heavy for Roo are the ones complaining that their new stuff (the lighter stuff) sucks...

i dont even hate metallica i just dont like the music they make, I didnt like Tool before roo last year and i still dont like Tool after seeing them at roo. not everyone is gonna like a band and a lot of (not all) people that are into most of the bands on this line up prob dont like metal in general so therefor there is gonna be a lot of hate

That's fine, and I respect your opinion. You aren't one of those I have qualms with. I have a problem with those who have never even given Metallica a chance, and just dismiss them completely because of the whole Napster deal.
How do you know Metallica's doing this for the money? The whole Napster thing started not because of profit motivations, but because they were upset their unreleased work was being distributed before they had it finished to their liking. I don't think it's wrong to let an artist be in charge of how to initially release their music - do you?
A big reason Metallica came out of the underground was precisely because their fans traded cassettes of material they had already decided was finished.
I'm one of the apparent few who doesn't still have a chip on my shoulder over the whole Napster situation. It wasn't legal, regardless of which artist challenged it. I doubt they'll prohibit taping of their set, for what that's worth.
I mean, if we're going to complain about profit motives - why didn't I see such a vigorous anti-Police backlash last year? One could easily argue that any old act that's reunited is in it for the money. You could say the same thing about the potential of Led Zeppelin headlining.
When it comes down to it: There are some skilled musicians in that band, who will likely deliver a solid set. I still have a net-positive opinion of Metallica's entire catalog, even considering some of the crap they've put out in the last decade. They're working with Rick Rubin on an album now, and I can trust him to steer them in a better direction. Les Claypool, who's a friend of guitarist Kirk Hammett, auditioned for the band at one point. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make a guest appearance during their set.

Jack White hates that too....guess we all have to talk shit about him now too....
I have every one of the songs mentioned in this thread. Hell, I have ever Metallica album prior to Load (and random songs from ones after that). I like Metallica's music. I just think that their personalities, music, and fans just kind of hurt the image of the festival.
I'd gladly go to a Metallica concert, but that's different. I'd be extremely excited to see them headline Ozzfest, but Ozzfest is not Bonnaroo. Thank God.

Pearl Jam still puts on an amazing show. I'd rather see them live currently than in '98. Their last album was their best since No Code. Their fans are some of the nicest fans I've ever met, and are fans of similiar music - most people on their message board have been to Bonnaroo before. The band members encourage the trading of their shows, their against the corporate takeover of music, they're in it for the music (not the money), and they're not assholes. They fit perfectly with the Bonnaroo crowd, probably the best headliner since Radiohead. Metallica doesn't.

i agree with you on that actually, the whole anti metallica cause of napster thing seems pretty silly to me. sry if it seemed like i was calling you out im just a lil agitated still about this line up.
I'm not going to talk nuts about any musician who's upset they weren't able to release their music on their terms. Be it Jack White or be it Lars Ulrich - it's on principle, not on an artist-by-artist basis.
Perhaps, instead of talking shit about Jack White for having the same objections, we could just not talk shit at all? If people just want to call out artists for doing it for money: Wilco did all those VW ads. FLips did Intel ads. Willie Nelson did Taco Bell ads. I could go on with this tangent, but I'd rather not go that route. We could hate on a lot of bands because of commercial entanglements, but instead we should consider them on their own merit.

Here are some live Metallica show from last year. I can't really judge them since I've never been a fan, but it doesn't sound too great to me.
And Justice for All is fricken sweet there. Thats them at live earth, professional video. James's voice actually sounds pretty good there, and it was this past year. I really don't see how Metallica shows are no good anymore, seem pretty good to me.
Thats the concert they played Master of Puppets all the way through, and full Orion for the first time. Doesn't look shortened to me.
Compared to last years headliners... I think Metallica Pearl jam and Kanye are seriously a step up... I mean the police are good... but were in their prime like what the 1800's and not to hurt anyones feelings kings of leon and tool..... ewwww... I would rather see metallica then all of last years headliners.... Except the white stripes.... Seriously everyone should check the Lars interview on bonnaroo.com....
