I'm pretty pumped to see these guys play live. finally.
Randomly found them on some blog and I have to admit, part of the reason I dig them is the way they make bluegrass more "accessible" and mainstream (I guess that's how you'd describe it), plus they seem to be on the same level, atleast to me, as Old Crow Medicine Show.
If you haven't heard them, listen to "Matrimony". It made me fall in love...

Yeah i agree, OCMS and the Avetts both approach roots music on the same level and they definetly make it more accesible (they're like "gateway" artists, if you get my drift), but yeah I doubt its intentional to make it more accesible, its just they both inject their own blend of folk, punk, and rock n' roll in to the songs.
I'm seeing the Avetts later this Feburary here in Champaign for the first time. I am soooo pumped! It's gonna be a great time.
oh and big time karma for starting this thread. They are definetly Top 5 must see for me.

What do you guys think of the album "Emotionalism"? I was thinking of getting one of theirs and heard that's what I need to pick up.
yeah Emotionalism is the best place to start. If you want more ballady stuff, the Gleam-EP is AMAZING, considering they're best known for their raucous shows, but the ballads on the Gleam are top notch. But yeah if you like Emotionalism, you'll definetly like Four Thieves Gone, and Mignonette (the other two of theirs I have). Ha, i say just get as much of the Avett's Material as possible and go from there

a favorite Avett Brothers song:
Smoke In Our Lights: You're not a girl, you're a town You're snow on the ground You're my first year in school You're the words in a song that Hoon sang to me And all around my memories, you dance
You're not a girl, you're a car You're a red Trans Am You're 90 miles an hour We never get caught cause there's no cops around And no roads like this, downtown
Why'd we have to change It all seems so fine We'll go our own ways We're both asking Why'd we have to change It all seems so fine We'll go our own ways We're both asking, why
You're not a girl, you're the night of the homecoming game You're the voice in my head Just begging me to stay You're the smoke in our lights as we sped away To catch the moonlight on the graves
You're not a girl, you're a waltz You're a canopy bed You're June to August You're the back and forth sway of the hammock all day When I asked you what did you say?
Why'd we have to change It all seems so fine We'll go our own ways We're both asking Why'd we have to change It all seems so fine We'll go our own ways We're both asking, why

My back was killing me the night they played in '06. By the time I got to their tent all the seats were taken and I think I spent half the show leaning on a rail just out side the right of the tent, finally got a table, barely able to hobble back to camp afterwards. But I wasn't going to miss that show and by next morning, I was back to normal.

ooo never heard that song, I'm assuming Hoon is Blind Melon Shannon Hoon? If so that is a really cool (and unexpected) reference. Is that off the live album?

yea its gotta be a BM Hoon ref - thats how i always took it, and its from Live Vol 2
The Avett Bros were great in '06. It was the only band that I saw that year that forced me to go out and buy some of their music. I just hope they get a bigger tent than the Troo Lounge this year. I should be seeing them on my b-day here in Atlanta!
oh, you guys MUST check them out this year! A gem among rubies....I adore this band. Start with "Emotionalism"---conveniently their newest album and the one their likely to play more of. Solid album. Their live energy is ridiculous.....youtube "Talk on Indolence" to get you pumped to see these guys live.

I saw these guys live a couple years back and they rocked...I'm super psyched to see them at Roo. I went to their myspace page to check them out but I found their recorded songs not to have the same "pizzazz" as their live show. (That's right I used the word pizzazz.) To the person looking for an album I know someone mentioned a live album so I would tentatively suggest starting there...not owning any albums myself. Glad to hear other people are excited to see them.
