[k i missed the whole kanye thing, but i went to a bowling function with work instead. and it was fun. woohoo].
anyways. my two cents: for a while, mr. west got on my nerves with his pretentiousness. but if you really listen to his lyrics, you can see how he hasn't had it easy all along and he's appreaciating on what he has now...
and even if he does talk about christian dior, etc., [i'm thinking of 'the good life'] he is appreciating what he has come to have, due to his success. It might not exactly come off like that, but that's what it boils down to.
As one of my bosses told me the other day, she likens him to a motivational speaker. Taking a look at a few tracks off the new record, "stronger" and "the good life", she is totally right. He's letting folks know that it's possible to get what you are working for and to not give up, but also stick to your roots [as shown by his numerous references to his family members, particularly his mom and grandmother].
anyways. i like kanye and am pumped to see him play since i didn't take the chance to a few months ago when I could have.

I'm sorry, but if Kanye pulls out something like this:
(2006 Grammys - Golddigger with Jamie Foxx)
Then it's going to be one hell of a show. I know he's always over the top, and I'm personally pumped to see him perform. He's an excellent producer, and a good showman...
I still need to find the vid for this year's performance...
but like I've said earlier in the thread, I'm excited about Kanye.
I hope he performs older songs too... I loved Through the Wire. It was amazing that he rapped it with his jaw wired up.
Or Family Business. The first time I heard that song, it was the first nice spring day of my senior year of college and I was driving with two friends to the national zoo in DC. Since then, that song has had the uncanny ability to make me happy no matter what.
regardless of whether you like him as a person or not, he is one of the best performers out there. i've seen him live twice and can't wait to see him again at roo.
Ah. Thanks for the links. I'll check em out in a few. If Kanye does bring the Glow Show to Roo, I'm gonna get all glowed out. Would be fun as hell. I'm listening to "Graduation" right now. He is a truly talented producer...
BTW, as crazy as Amy Winehouse is, she is one hell of a talent. (Sorry, I'm getting caught up on performances right now) She's got a voice from another time, that's for sure.

Yeah, she does have a pretty insane lifestyle.. I would like to hear something new from her though
OK I watched the Grammy's on tape delay. I've thought the Grammy's the last few years were good but this year sucked. Not a single memorable performance. The best thing was Rhapsody In Blue.
When did Pat Smear rejoin Foo Fighters? I thought Dave Grohl wanted nothing to do with him ever again. Something to do with Smear and Grohl's ex.

Wow from watching those videos Kanye's live show has changed big time since the 3 other times I had seen him. He had always had a full string section but not a full live band. If he doesn't do a glow in the dark set at Roo I am going to be majorly let down now after seeing some of that.
im glad for all of you that kanye is going to be at roo just like i was glad for my friends that the police will be there. ive already talked to my buddy who is going and hes excited to see him. thats enough for me. i dont like him, no, and i dont like his attitude, and i found that whole thing sorta silly but thats me and i wont be at his show so i wont heckle him. i dont think it will be a problem - i think it will make a good alternative (as in different from other acts there). i realize that its a hard line ....do you stay pure bonnaroo or do you diversify???? its a good question but i try to keep an open mind.

I think some of y'all need to chill out just a bit. It's part of a persona. I've seen Kanye live twice and he never fails to impress. He's an excellent showman and pulls out all the stops for his live shows. Does he come off as arrogant? Of course. But if you actually knew anything about him besides a few clips that made a bunch of headlines, you'd also know he has some amazingly introspective and vulernable songs where you can really relate. The fact is, if he came out and was completely down to earth in every interview, he would never be newsworthy, and it would be a lot tougher for him to sell records/make a living.

I'm sorry, but what the hell are you talking about? Kanye West grew up in the suburbs, his family had plenty of money. He isn't one of the "ghetto" stories like so many other rappers. He had more than enough money to go to a pretty high end art school, and then flunked his way out (or as he claims, "decided he was finished"). The point is, he did have it easy all along. His parents divorced when he was young (which I'm sure isn't easy, but it happens to millions of kids in the suburbs), but his family was still relatively affluent. This isn't Biggie, who really did grow up on the streets and in relative poverty. This is Kanye West, a man who has completely rearranged his image to fit what he thinks people want him to be.

there are plenty of artists who are selling records and making quite the living without being a complete dbag on national television, and in front of an auditorium of his peers. there is never a reason to alienate people. he is not the first person to ever have it "rough" growing up.
i plan to see his show at bonnaroo because i believe him to be a great performer. doesn't mean i like him as a person.

Kanye is a great performer but i don't care much about him as a person. I understand the man lost his mother and that is hard to deal with - however, i feel like the media focused way too much attention on her 'unexpected' death and how he is coping with it. I'm not trying to come off as an ass or anything, just wanted to post my thoughts. His performance at bonnaroo will be great, no doubt about it.

This isn't a full disagreement since a lot of your argument is correct, just a few things I'd like to elaborate on. Yes, Biggie is truly from poverty, but that doesn't mean being broke are the only struggles you can bring to your music.
Here are a few choice lyrics that I think sum up a lot of the really relatable themes in Kanye's music.
Despite not being dirt poor growing up, he really did strike out on his own and bust his ass to make it as big as he did. And regardless where you come from, you can still appreciate where you've gotten to.
"I don’t know I just wanted better for my kids And I ain’t sayin’ we was from the projects"
I won't write an entire biography, but a lot of elements of his music are emotional and understandable if you take the time to invest yourself in them. Besides the struggle to keep your faith and be proud of it while being successful and told to keep it out of the limelight, there's always the fact that despite his family's relative wealth, he was so dedicated to his art that he left his girlfriend at the time to pursue his career, and drove across the country with all his belongings.
Also worth mentioning he was on life support after his near-fatal car accident and had to bust his ass to get his career and life back on track, two things he didn't even know if he'd have again.
