One thing I love about live music is listening and watching really great drummers. We all know many of the great guitarists at Bonnaroo this year such as RR, Derek Trucks, and Warren Hayes, but what are some great drummers you know of?
I'm mainly looking for smaller artists, cause I'm sure we all know of great drummers such as Matt Cameron.
On a side note, I'm so glad I decided to catch Clutch last lear. I didn't plan on seeing them til about 15 minutes before their show. Glad I did because whoever their drummer is is a beast!
Hey, Jude, don't be afraid. You were made to go out and get her. The minute you let her under your skin, Then you begin to make it better.
And any time you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain. Don't carry the world upon your shoulders. Well don't you know that it's a fool who plays it cool By making his world a little colder.
...Anyone other than Lars Ulrich. Sorry Metallica fans.
Wow, the Metallica hate held out all the way until the first reply. Did you not notice that he said "Great Drummers of Bonnaroo 08", not "Another Thread to state you are unhappy with Metallica being at Bonnaroo 08". Shocking. On a positive note, I would like to add Kris from Umphrey's McGee. Very, very good drummer.

death cab drummer jason mcgerr is awesome, he knows his stuff, its nothing crazy but he knows how to incorporate complex rhythms together to make some cool stuff. check it out
jaimoe from the allmans with out a doubt and levon, one of the greatest singing drummers. in fact, that sounds like a pretty good percussion section for a superjam....

Will Levon Helm actually play the drums, or does he usually sing and play guitar? All I know is he was the drummer for The Band, but I thought he went solo and played guitar or something..I may of wrong.
Oh I know of Thomas Pridgen - I saw him a month ago in Toronto with Mars Volta. This guy is a beast!
Edit: and thanks for the suggestions..it looks like I need to check out the Battles
Levon still plays the drums and damn good I might add (he will the the mandolin for a few tunes, but he plays drums during 95% of his show).
The dude from Mastodon is killer, Yonrico Scott from the Derek Trucks Band is great, Butch & Jaimoe from the ABB are great as well, Matt Cameron from Pearl Jam is badass (the man does the wierdest things w/ the hi-hats and makes it fit in with most songs quiet nicely), and the dude from MMJ ain't shabby either.

Please list some great drummers you recommend.
glad to see you enjoyed clutch...jean-paul, their drummer, is indeed a beast and one of my favorite drummers of all time.

Loved him so much I'm gonna go see Clunch again next week!
Thanks for the recommendations guys..yea I've seen MMJ once I did indeed like his drumming..although I did end up watching the front guys most of the show..some great guitar work was going on.
I share your passion for a great drummer I think its a piece that can take an average band and bring them to the next level, IMO Brann Dailor from Mastodon is the best in the game right now and I'm not alone in thinking that the great Dave Grohl who's certainly seen his share of music claims him to be the best out there, however if all the signs are true and the great Volta is there (Mastodon and Volta are good friends btw) Pridgen is right there with him I think and 24 yrs old to boot course he was winning major drum comps at age 10. I do agree John Stainer of Helmet/Tomahawk fame shows great skill and drives alot of Battles music which I can't wait to see live
This man came up to me just the other day, asked me I'd been born again. I told him, "I didn't think I had." That I had been rejected. But I think, Hell's got all the good bands anyway. And Bonnaroo.
yeah levon is by far the greatest drummer here. People have said (i forgot who) that he's the only drummer on the planet that can make a person cry. I agree.

Wow, that was completely uncalled for guy. I actually dig Metallica. Not especially happy about them as a Roo-headliner, but think they're overall a good band and one I'm looking forward to finally seeing live. I just think that Lars is a hugely overrated drummer and by far the weak link of the band.
