I know a lot of you will disagree with me, and I said it last year and it was true.
With tickets selling so well the last couple of years I doubt a lot of money will be spent on adding new artists, meaning great bands we're hoping for won't be added. I know many people thought last year that no one big was added due to many artists being leaked, but I'm doubting that's the case.
I mean it's a business, and they want to sell 80k tickets by spending the least amount of money as possible. I think PJ are more popular than many think (mainly because they haven't played the south in 5 years), so I'm guessing tickets are selling quite fast this year.
I want the Mars Volta added as much as the next guy, but I'm not holding my breath for any spectacular band to be added.
I really hope I'm wrong, but if I'm right please hold off on buying tickets so quickly next year : )
My understanding about last year is that more of the lineup leaked before the initial announcement than was actually going to be announced, so the organizers just announced everything that had been leaked.

I agree with you. I really don't see many more than 10 more bands being added to the tents and stages, with the exception of jazz acts and probably about 10 or 11 more comedians. The cafes will still get all of their acts.
Frankly, a lot of the non-headlining bands on this year's schedule demand long (1.5 to 2 hours minimum) sets including the Allmans, Phil and Friends, Levon Helm, Umphrey's, MMJ, and others. If this is the case, look for a smaller lineup than we are used to.
I'm not a Mars Volta fan, but I'm still expecting them to get added along with the handful of artists whose pages have been updated on the Bonnaroo site. Other than that, I wouldn't expect many more.

you know, as much as i would like some awesome additions (tmv, les claypool, msmw), i would so be down everyone having longer sets.
There's some solid logic in your theory, but I don't think additions are solely to boost ticket sales. They still need to fill out the schedule and I'm sure that there are bands that they couldn't finish negotiating with (for whatever reason) before they released the initial lineup.
Im going to disagree. The problem with last year is that the Police absorbed alot of the budget, I believe they were getting a million $$ a show. Most headliners are nowhere near that. Of course it s still a business but the great thing about Bonnaroo is that these guys have big egos and they want to standout head and shoulders above all of the other fest. In order to standout they cant keep doing the same old jam acts year after year like many of the complainers on Jambase prefer. I still expect pretty big things to come

I agree with you. I also do not think Bonnaroo waits to see the initial ticket sells of the first week or two to decide on how many new acts they should add to boost sells. This would be very risky. To schedule some of these bands on these particular dates would take months or even years to organize. I think Bonnaroo has several more tricks up their sleeve. The ticket prices have gone up year after year as have the number of bands that play there. Look for 30 more acts to be added...including some big time names that they are still trying to work kinks out with. I am pretty sure more country singers will be announced as well. Fan Fair in Nashville is the same weekend as Bonnaroo so it wouldnt be hard for some of those guys to come down the road a bit and perform here also. Bonnaroo wants to be the biggest fvcking music festival out there and this year you wont be let down. They are not done yet.

Hmmm...I thought somebody said in some official capacity that there would be something like 20 to 30 additions? I'll admit that I can't remember at ALL where I saw that, so it may very well have been some news source speculating based on the number of acts scheduled this year vs. last year rather than anything official.
Also, the thumbnail lineup on the Roo home page says something like "Click here for latest updates!" - would they really bother adding something like that if there were only going to be a very few additions? They seem to be treating it as if there will be a reasonably steady stream of additions that you would want to keep checking back on.
Personally, I think the artist additions are nothing more than a ruse to generate interest in the fest.
I think 90% of the "additions" are booked well in advance of the initial artist announcement, and in order to generate interest in the months leading up to the fest, they trickle out the last 20 or so artists.
I've felt like they've been doing this since 03 or 04.

i dont see how its a ruse? why would they announce every band with the announcement? if tickets dont sell well, they have nothing to add to make it more enticing. of course they want to generate interest. these guys are trying to make money. why not get as much as possible?

I agree with this part 100%. I think with a few possible exceptions Superfly basically has the entire lineup nailed down in January and releases some of it via updates to generate publicity, generate ticket sales, generate buzz amongst the fans, keep things interesting, etc. I don't think it would be very practical to change their booking strategy for the current year dramatically based on ticket sales.
That said, I agree with the conclusion that most seem to be coming to that we will see 5-10 acts added for the main 5 stages and a total of 30 or so added for all of the stages all together. I'm not expecting anything mind-blowing simply because lower expectations treat you better than high ones for things you have no influence over.

this is how almost every fest operates. Look at Lollapalooza or Coachella.
i think they keep some artists hush because it continues the website lookin and chatter which will boost sales. Plus they probably have adds up on their sites to boost ibcome as well with every viewer on their page. I know I'm addicted to the site, tyring to figure out these additions

Simply saying that calling them "additions" is a ruse. Pretty sure every act is booked well in advance. the "ruse," or deception, would be calling them "additions," when in reality, they were added months ago.
I'm just wondering if it's 3 or 4 rounds this year. If I were a betting man, which I'm not, I would say you'll have four rounds of additional acts that are themed along the lines of Cafe acts, Jazz acts, Electronic/Indie acts, Jam/Traditional Roo acts.

if you add up the bands we have so far, and the spots they fill in what/which/this/that/other thurs-sun, there aren't very many spots to fill, looking at what the setup has basically been all along, we'll probably end up with anywhere from 10-15 at most-bands who fill these spots up, the rest of the bands will either be the small cafes and jazz tent, should they bring the jazz tent back, which i have yet to hear, and i've figured this out because i've made about 100 mock schedules based on who's playing what day, the genre every band that's announced fits into, and i place them where it seems they could likely play, some examples:
pearl jam-sat headliner metallica-fri headliner jack johnson-sun headliner kanye west-could end up being the first act to ever play the which stage on thurs, but he could also play any of the other days, thurs wouldn't suprise me other what stage acts i'm thinking-chris rock, raconteurs, mmj, phil lesh acoustic, bb king, allman bros, trucks/tedeschi, yonder, plant/krauss which stage acts i'm thinking-willie nelson, ben folds, death cab, oar, aimee mann, bluegrass allstars, little feat, jakob dylan, robert randolph, mason jennings, ozomatli, donavon f, latenights-phil, i heard blue man group was unofficially confirmed thru someone although they haven't been announced, that'll be a latenight show, think of all the people painted blue for that show tent latenights-sigur ros, levon helm, umphreys, mia, lupe fiasco, ladytron, superjam, saul williams assuming he will be there, the whole tennessee reference brought up here somewhere on inforoo tent acts-broken social scene, pat green, solomon burke, iron and wine, talib kweli, gogol bordello, mastodon, swell season, fiery furnaces, drive-by truckers, sharon jones, against me, rilo kiley, tegan and sara, jose gonzalez, etc....
imo they will have two more rounds of additions...one with the cafe artist and such and one prolly with a nice surprise or two. you gotta figure within those two rounds we could see up to 20 artist with the cafe's included. i cant wait cause thats almost 20 chances to have at least one amazing act included.

i excite.
there will be at least 4 more rounds. 1st one with will fill out the lineup on the main stages and the tents, 2nd comedy tent, 3rd jazz tent and 4th cafe acts.
