I know it's a 'super-jam' with various artists but when does it happen? How long is it? Is it announced beforehand or is it one of those things that just spreads by word of mouth?

no, usually takes place in a tent i believe
Correct, Superjam has always been in a tent.
Also, up until 2006, Superjam was held on Sunday during the day. But in 2006 they moved it to latenight on Saturday (probably so that Trey could play and still accommodate his other tour dates). Last year it was held late night on Friday, and for the first time ever, they announced who was playing it advance (probably because they wanted to flaunt the fact that JPJ was there).
I expect the trend of latenight Superjam to continue, but I don't think we will know who is playing until right around the time it starts.
You also asked about how long it is...last year's was scheduled from 12-3....but they didn't come on until closer to 12:30, and were done by 2...I found that kind of disappointing.

another note about the Superjam, it usually features at least one artist who is otherwise not playing the festival with another act.
past superjams:
2002: Michael Kang, Bela Fleck, Jeff Raines, and Robert Randolph with other guests Danyel Morgan, Bill Nershi, Stanton Moore, Edgar Meyer, Keith Moseley, Kyle Hollingsworth, DJ Logic, Rich Vogel, Robert Mercurio, Michael Travis and Marcus Randolph.
2003: Dr. John, Mike Gordon, Luther Dickinson, Stanton Moore, Dewayne Burnside and G. Love
2004: Stanton Moore, Maceo Parker, George Porter, Eric Krasno, Neil Evans, Papa Mali, Adam Deitch, Reggie Watts, The New Orleans Horns and others.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

i want a completely off the wall superjam like last year...
did anyone else have ANY suspiscion that JPJ, Ben Harper and Questlove would be the superjam? i sure as hell didn't... i do like the idea of supergroups like KWI or GRAB though... those are always fun to watch... but the random artist boogaloo's are the best....

wasn't 2002 technically the Keller Williams Incident + all those guests?
