After seeing U2 3D last night, I'm convinced that there are. The production of their live performances is incredible and they have a huuuge worldwide following. The only other band I can think of with that kind of demand is The Rolling Stones. Thoughts?

Personally I wouldn't want U2 or the Stones at 'Roo anyways. Bono is, in the words of stand marsh "a total douche", and the Stones are just hard to watch live at this point.
So maybe what I'm getting at is that bands that would be too big for Roo are as such because their egos are too big for Roo. Which is why Metallica is getting some nasty backlash from some folks, and why the likes of Axel Rose or anyone like him are bad choices for the fest simply because their live shows and egos would be way too big.
stones, zep, mccartney, eagles immediately come to mind. good seats for any of these artists would be similar price to an entire roo ticket, assuming u get it first hand, so they would have to b willing to take a revenue hit which isn't impossible, but not exactly likely either. if u use stub hub or something, ur looking at the price of 2 vip tix minimum. also a reunited phish, since they could throw their own bonnaroo by themselves and keep all the dough.... i mean trey's mounting legal fees alone might be reason enough for a phish festie. staying out of jail on repeat no no word offenses and probation violations isn't cheap.
though i will say, zep has said any touring would not be about money, because they don't need it (i guess those cadillac commercials worked out nicely) floyd is questionable too i think

I always liked this joke:
So Eddie Vedder dies suddenly and goes to heaven.. Saint Peter is are giving him the tour and showing him around and Eddie asks he might get to meet any great musical heroes that have passed on.. "Is there any way I meet Jimi Hendrix?"..
Saint Peter says "of course.. right over there is.. " and Eddie looks where he is pointing and exclaims "oh Man there he is Hendrix! and it looks like he is talking to James Brown and Mozart and .. wait a minute is that Bono?! did Bono die too?!"
Saint Peter shakes his head and says, "oh.. no that is Jesus, he just likes to pretend he is Bono."

Poor Trey, if he shows up at Roo will his probation officers be present during his show? And if so, could we possibly lighten them up with a couple beers? A couple cases of beer? Then steal him away from the Man and hightail it to Mexico!
I'd imagine that Phish would be too big for Bonnaroo if they didn't tour or do their own festival before Roo. All the people who have been waiting years to see them again (or for the first time) would buy up all the tickets before anyone else could.

im gonna say no...
U2 is not THAT great. i like U2, im irish, the joshua tree is one of my favorite cds. still, U2 is not that great. they are very pop right now, and i dont think they are at all too big for roo, its just more that not a lot of people would be excited to see them there.
the rolling stones flat out suck, theyre old and should retire before they die. i love their music but they are far too fucking old to pay $300 dollars to see them in concert.
paul mccartney is better than the stones but he also sucks because he gets rich off of having once been a Beatle. paul mccartney loves money. also not worth the $300 ticket price to see him. R.i.P john lennon and george harrison.
eagles are not that big right now either, although i would love to see joe walsh in any way shape or form. But too big for roo? not very likely.
zep im just gonna ignore because i think its rather comical some people are conviced theyre making an appearance while others are saying they are "too big" to play roo. i just dont think theyre gonna be there b/c robert plant is doing his thing with allison krauss, not because the farm couldnt handle a zeppelin show.
in conclusion, i dont think there is a band on the planet right now too big to headline bonnaroo, honestly feel like bonnaroo transcends whoever they put on stage. But, for the sake of the thread im gonna say that Radiohead CSNY/Young and Tom Petty the closest you come to being too big for roo.

eagles aren't that big because they don't play anymore, but their farewell show in new zealand was super expensive. the police weren't anywhere on the radar til they announced a comeback, and the eagles would be much bigger if they did the same with the full lineup.

Madonna proved to be too big for Coachella, not in terms of ego, music quality or sales volume, just that they tried to drop her into the Dance Tent schedule. Even with a bigger tent and external jumbotrons, it was like a zoo - and for a 30 minute set.
I didn't mind as I was watching Editors in another (quieter) tent at the time.

joking? hopefully?
no more like making a point. Radiohead is HUUGE right now, and they have already proven to be a great fit for 'Roo. Same for legends like Young and Petty. If these acts arent too big for the farm then i just dont see anyone who is.

There really are not any bands "too big" for roo. It is one of, if not the most, most powerful festival in the world. imo they could probably get just about anyone they wanted. The question is if they would really try to go out and get a U2 or the Rolling Stones, I simply just do not see this happening. Then again I never saw metallica happening, leave it to bonnaroo to always through the curve ball and keep me interested.

i love radiohead, petty, neil young as much as the next guy, but as far as ticket price and concert draw, they really don't stack up to the legends previously mentioned. i guess it's the whole "who knows how much longer these guys will be alive" factor. popularity doesn't restrict bonnaroo, but the prices and egos certainly do. i saw petty GA for $40 a couple years ago. even dylan and nelson's tour had higher prices. same goes for neil young (with the exception perhaps of some of his NY shows). even dave matthews band is a bigger draw than petty. for an example, many of the mentioned artists toured in 2005: top tours Stones U2 Celine Dion McCartney Eagles Elton John All had $100+ ticket prices DMB was #8 Petty came in #18, and only $38 per ticket, less than motley crue commanded.
I personally don't think anyone is too big for Bonnaroo. Bonnaroo is essentially one of the biggest venues in the country. There will be anywhere from 80-100k people around. If that can't support an artist, I don't know what venue/event can.
i dont think its a size thing either. its about how much money a headliner is gonna want, and whether or not they can do better playing solo shows. roo pays so many acts to play that, at some point, they just can't spend that much on a single performer. some ppl just aren't very feasible as festival shows anymore because of this. not many, but certainly a few. i just don't see how a group that could basically name their price for a sellout at any US venue (floyd, zep for sure) would play for a fraction of a $250 ticket, especially when there have to be at least 3 or 4 other big acts that draw some pretty big cash as well on the lineup.
I guess that I can understand the U2 hate here. They are commercial giants with a very outspoken lead singer.
That said, if you haven't seen them live you have no idea what you're missing. They are such amazing performers that I cannot imagine seeing them and not walking away at least impressed.
(Of course now that I've typed this, there will be a dozen people who saw them and didn't like them. That's the bitchslap of the internet, though!)

I'll agree, before the dissenters arrive! I've seen U2 twice and i would easily put them both in my top 5 live concerts of all time (out of around 200-250 concerts, so far)
Now you just told me that friendship is all I'm forced to repair the breech in my wall Illusions and dreams, as usual, it seems Sabra girl, they've been my downfall

I thought sigur ros was a band I would never see there. they are just too epic in my mind. At this point with metallica and kanye in the same year. no one is too big to be at bonnaroo

I was given a chance to see U2 several years ago, only to have the hand of fate jerk it right out from under me.
I was a junior in high school in '98 and a local radio station was giving away tickets to see them in DC (I'm from NC). Well, I called in and lo and behold, was the right caller and won the tickets. Turns out the concert got cancelled because of technical issues and I got squat, except for a bunch of pent up excitement. Luckily, that was relieved some years later in '02 with my first 'Roo experience:).
