Any Chicago people out there have local bands to recommend? There is definitly some stuff out there that I get into but I'm sure there is plenty I'm missing. I'm really curious to see what other Chicago-Bonnaroo people are into
Umphrey's is obviously the big jam band success from this area but I'm wondering about local Chicago bands that play in smaller clubs.
I've been in the city for about 5 1/2 years now and I have seen some amazing bands come and go.
The band known as Swimmer/Maita Maita/MVP (Jazz-Funk-Improvisation) was my absolute favorite, but they've been gone for a while.
My friends and I love to make an event of Bumpus (mostly Funk) shows but they haven't played for the last few months, which is rare for them. Rachael Yamagata, who used to be with Bumpus, is definitely worth checking out, but she is more in a Fiona Apple kind of direction.
The band that is currently my favorite is Abstract Giants. They are a full live band (bass, drums, guitar, keys and violin) fronted by three incredible rappers. The rhyming is extremely musical and well-coordinated and the band is TIGHT. If you are in the Chicago area you should definitely check them out, even if hip-hop isn't your favorite thing. I've caught them mostly at Subterranean but also at Double Door and Martyr's. If we get any kind of a thread going here I will be sure to let people know when they are playing (or check out abstractgiants.com).

I am not in Chicago. I am like an hour and some minutes away. I have heard great things about Bumpus too!
There is a musician from Rockford that is branching out into Dekalb, Chicago & the surrounding areas that I really reccommend. His name is Ernie Hendricks. He was in a band called the Seed band. Check him out if he comes around he is great!!

Sound Tribe Sector 9 is playing on Friday (April 2nd) at the Vic Theater in Chicago. Tickets are only like $18.00 or something. I know STS9 isnt a local band or anything, but it should be an awesome show!
Also, on Saturday (April 3rd) Grandaddy is playing at the same place (The Vic Theater). That show is a costs a little more (its like $26) but hell yeah I'll be there!
Its a weekend full of great music at the Vic! Hope to see a bunch of you there! ;D
Karma Sutra is a really cool band from Chicago. Indian female singer with a voice from above. Ethnic percussion and keyboards/samples. Sort of world-beat electronica meets Portishead. I've seen them several times and they are a feast both visually and auraly (is that a word?).
Anyone in the Chicago area should check out the Abstract Giants CD-Release party at the Metro tonight (Thursday May 13). Free before nine with a comp you can get at abstractgiants.com.
Live band hip-hop. Best "local" band in the city IMHO.
they're one of the six finalists for this thing, and the only band from this midwest competition from Chicago. They can win like $35,000 in prizes if they pull this off! I'll be there with bells on!
If you're bored around the city tonight come on out...otherwise they're playing the Fireside on Saturday night with Menthol...this one is all ages!
Treologic opened for Abstract Giants at the Metro tonight! Sorry I didn't mention that in my previous post. Where you there? I had a blast celebrating my birthday with Abstract. Treologic had a whole horn section and a slick R&B singer-guy. The last time I saw them it was rapper-drums-keys-guitar. What's up with that? Anyway they rocked. So did Abstract. Abstract's first ever CD (AGrowCulture) is kickin'.

I was thinking about checking out Calexico...they blew me away at Bonnaroo & their cover of "Alone Together, Or" by Love was truly something to behold! I doubt I'll make it though, due to some conflicts.
If anyone's interested, my buddy's band "The Its" are playing a MOBfest show at Nevin's Live up in Evanston on Saturday night!
