Ka mai, have you seen Michel Gondry's Directors Label DVD? It's got a bunch of his videos, a couple of short films, commercials, etc. It's pretty cool. Some of his videos are really fantastic!
One of my most cherished DVDs. I could go on and on forever about Gondry, but I'll try to restrain myself.
The "I've Been 12 Forever" documentary is fantastic, probably my favorite thing on the DVD ("Part 1 Age 12-12" and "Part 2 Age 12-12" are both equally good ). I just love that guy.
Favorite vids: -Sugar Water (Cibo Matto) -Hardest Button to Button -I can't think of the name but the techno song where the landscape flying by a train/car window matches the music perfectly. (I think its Chemical Brothers) -The Daft Punk video
Incidentally, the DVD is $14.95 at this point and for the quantity, diversity and fact that it's divided up into 5 minute videos, this is absolutely an owner not a renter.
I think the guy creates visual compliments to music in a more creative, interesting and "true to the music" way than any other filmmaker I am aware of (the upthread mentioned Stop Making Sense is the only thing in the same category to me).
Although I consider it more of a "work by Dave Chappelle" than a "movie by Michel Gondry", I think Gondry does a fantastic job with the concert scenes in "Dave Chappelle's Block Party". I'd hate to overhype it because I'm a sucker for Chappelle, Gondry, Erykah Badu, anything in mainstream American culture that's remotely politically honest and observant, and humanist documentaries that treat all of the people in them like worthwhile human beings, but I love that damn movie. It's a celebration, bitches!
EDIT: (in French accent) I so love Michel I mek heem my avatar
-I can't think of the name but the techno song where the landscape flying by a train/car window matches the music perfectly. (I think its Chemical Brothers)
That video is incredible! It is a Chemical Brothers song; I think it is Star Guitar. My other favorites are Let Forever Be (Also a Chemical Brothers); Come into my world (Kylie Minogue) and Everlong (Foo Fighters).
We started to watch the I've Been 12 Forever movie, but for some reason we never finished it. I'll have to go back and watch it now.
If you like Adaptation and/or Eternal Sunshine, you might want to check out this:
It's the third of the four movies that Charlie Kaufman wrote (first Being John Malkovich and Adaptation directed by Spike Jones, then Human Nature and Eternal Sunshine directed by Michel Gondry). It's weird. For some reason it didn't get the full-on marketing push that his other movies did. I think its hilarious and thought provoking. Maybe not quite as mind-bending as his other films but weird enough that the marketing team decided "we can't sell this". Patricia Arquette has a thick coat of body hair. Mice are taught to use silverware. Adults wear diapers. As you can tell from the DVD cover, it's "A hoot".Personally I like Eternal Sunshine the best out of the four and consider the other three flawed but highly entertaining.
I've been wanting to see this since this was posted. Finally got it the other day. I really liked it. I was surpised when I came back here and saw that it was his 3rd film. Just based on the movie, I would have guessed it was earlier. Not that I would ever call Charlie Kaufman subtle, but this seemed less so than Being John Malkovitch and Eternal Sunshine. (Maybe not so much for Adaptation). Regardless, though, it was funny and interesting.
As a side note, my boyfriend and I have an ongoing argument. He says that Patricia Arquette is ugly. I think she just has wierd teeth that make her look wierd.
Waking life (if if you guys havnt sene it do so right now), Dazed and Confused, Life Aquatic, Pulp Fiction, and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. And just because I can my 6th is Requiem for a Dream.
