Organized religion destroys who we are by inhibiting our actions... by inhibiting our decisions, out of... out of fear of some... some intangible parent figure who... who shakes a finger at us from thousands of years ago and says... and says, "Do it - Do it and I'll fu(kin' spank you."

It's more then that to me. I don't go out of my way to smoke on 4:20, but if I'm about to and its cose to 4:20 then I will wait a few. To me when you see that time you now someone out there is blazing one. Its a sense of reassurence that this culture or movement or whatever you call it is growing.
I just think it is funny, I have no idea where 4:20 came from either (may be an interesting story). I seldom partake at that particular time, just thought it would be a good conversation starter.

According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers.
A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420."
Good work cfish, I knew the truth was out there! Well, thats my "something new" for the day! (Galactic is playing here in knoxville tonight, I can hardly sit still)
;DThe Rafael High School is one theory about 4:20 but there are also these ones and many more I'm sure...
The number is a police numeric code for a drug bust
There were, at one time, believed to be 420 chemicals in marijuana.
April 20th, or 4-20, is the last day on which one is supposed to plant cannabis seeds
The Beatles song "Come Together" is 4:20 in length
I guess what I'm saying... it doesn't really matter where it came from it's what you think of it now... I know what I'll be doing at 4:20 or maybe 5:20 as I'm at work but what will you be doing? ;D ;D
I love how words/symbols evolve ,and before you know it they have taken a meaning of their own, I think there comes a time when they stand on their own totally independent of the origin, always interesting going back to see the evolution........(rambling)
being "all grown up" and having to work does not allow me to celebrate 4:20, but if I see the time, it usually makes me do a doube take and then I smile and think about 1 hour from then when work is over and I too can partake.
i see graffiti too.. like you have nothing better to say then i smoke pote by using numbers.. im not bashing you just dont understand it.. its such a marketing scheme too.. like patches posters shirts hats watches
See, now that is so wrong. I can't believe that they take this concept/code/what have you and started selling it. That's just plain immature disrespect if you ask me. Each time that it is said so publicly (not here, this is within the community, but more of the shirts, magazines, etc.) it takes away from the special meaning that it has.
Well, I once heard that 4:20 was the optimum time to dose in order to be peaking when the Dead come on stage...but I think that's just another one of those legends and what not.
As to the allure of the number, I think it has to do with the sense of kindred spirit shared by pot smokers. Though we come from all different walks of life, different jobs, different locations, different hobbies, different ideals, etc... We all engage in this one act which is very both very personal and very illegal, and sometimes even sacred or spiritual in nature. It gives us something in common, a level on which we can all relate. So anytime you write 420 or smoke on 4:20, it's like a little nod or a secret handshake to the rest of the pot smoking community... Reaching out, making a connection. And that feels good no matter who you are or what you're doin. (my 2 cents)
