This was just released...
==================================================== P H I S H U P D A T E ** MAY 25, 2004 ** www.phish.com ====================================================
Last Friday night, I got together with Mike, Page and Fish to talk openly about the strong feelings I've been having that Phish has run its course and that we should end it now while it's still on a high note. Once we started talking, it quickly became apparent that the other guys' feelings, while not all the same as mine, were similar in many ways -- most importantly, that we all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don't want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act. By the end of the meeting, we realized that after almost twenty-one years together we were faced with the opportunity to graciously step away in unison, as a group, united in our friendship and our feelings of gratitude.
So Coventry will be the final Phish show. We are proud and thrilled that it will be in our home state of Vermont. We're also excited for the June and August shows, our last tour together. For the sake of clarity, I should say that this is not like the hiatus, which was our last attempt to revitalize ourselves. We're done. It's been an amazing and incredible journey. We thank you all for the love and support that you've shown us.
I REALLY appreciate that they want to end on a high note and avoid becoming repetitive. Phish's sound was always ever-changing, and I think that's been a bit less true since the hiatus. If they stuck around and mainly played all the tunes we know and love for another ten years, that just wouldn't be Phish. Each of these guys has other musical interests and directions that they are pursuing with other groups. TAB, Dave and Friends, Mike's band, Mike and Leo, Vida Blue, Fish w/ JMP and Pork Tornado. These are great groups, many of whom are expanding the borders, limits and potential of music the way Phish does at its best. Trey is one of my two or three favorite musicians on the planet and it seems clear to me that he is really passionate about the stuff he is doing w/ TAB. I want to see more films from Mike. I'm excited to see Vida Blue for the first time at 'roo.
I'll do anything to get my hands on a Deer Creek or Alpine ticket now, but I have to say I'm ok with this. I do wish they would keep making albums, even if they don't tour.
While this is sad, you gotta respect Phish for having the guts to walk away from something that could be really lucrative. It must have been a hard decision to make. If they'd kept going they would have turned into a joke or have been little better than a museum piece. Nothing good lasts forever.

Yeah this hurts but in a way it sort of feels good. Imagine if the Dead would have gotten off the road after 20 years. Jerry might still be around and kickin'.
The news is unfortunate but just think of all the positives that may come from it. Trey Mike Fish and Page won't just "dissapear"
And it'll open up the scene even more for up and coming bands. My pick for the next cultrual phenomenom -- STS9!!!
I think it just feels like the right time. It doesn't dimminish how much I will miss them though. I just can't imagine how great this last tour is gonna be. I'm going to Camden and Coventry, so at least they'll go out with a bang in my mind(my first and last phish fest). I think that you have to just be glad for the time you had with them. Cause in 10 years we can say that we were there. Thanks for the ride guys.
I definitely see how this would open up the way for new acts. I am definitely going to Coventry now. I would trade my Bonnaroo ticket to go (maybe! I'll have to sleep on that one.) I feel bad for those of you on the west coast for not getting any last tour dates.

im also a huge phish fan and have to agree with the general concensus of going out on top. did anyone else notice the similarity of the new years set in miami and NYE at MSG in 1999? Simple and While My Guitar Gently Weeps in set 3 on both nights was kinda repetitive. dont get me wrong i like both songs(really i like all phish songs) I actually feel that the hiatus killed their momentum. even thou Round Room was an awesome CD, they all started doing their own projects and lost their... interest? or something. theres always hope for reunion tours. I have a feeling phish will come back someday.

Phish open my eyes to a new lifestyle and a new way of thinking. I went from listening to hard rock to listening to almost strickly JamBands after my first Phish album, Rift. I got this album from my dad, he's not a phan but likes all sorts of music. I worked at media play at the time and started buying everything Phish. If it was not for them I wouldn't be who I am today. They might not be my favorite jamband, but they picked up the torch after Jerry passed, R.I.P.
I'm not ready at all. I'm only 20 and didn't get to see them before hiatus. I've seen them 7 times last year which were my only shows.
I still think they have alot of great music left in them, and for some reason I don't think this is the last we will see of the PRIDE OF VERMONT!!!!!!!!!!!!
