I am flipping out right now! In light of charlie rose last night, where Trey seemed so down on everything, I had a bad dream re: Phish last night .. real bad and freaky. So now I'm all F-ed up ... somebody say something to make me feel better! Please!
I have not seen the show yet, but I am just starting to feel a little better with the news of the break up. I am not too anxious to see the program yet. Give me another day or so.

Don't worry. I predict they will be doing at least 5 summer reunioun tours before 2010. This is all a plot to get you to buy tickets to coventry. It's very sad to me that a band like Phish would do this. Corporate America never fails to infiltrate. It's all about the money.
Have you checked out Trey's solo stuff? Have you seen Mike's film "Rising Low"? Heard Mike and Leo or Outside Out? Vida Blue? Fishman w/ Pork Tornado or Fish w/ JMP?
I will definitely miss Phish but there is much more to come from these guys. It won't be Phish but it I expect it won't fail to surprise, delight and interest me.
DemonSweat...Are you for real? This is not another hiatus. Phish won't be playing another show for at least 10,15,20 years (if at all). I really think Trey's heart isn't in it anymore. Corporate America?? You're kidding right? They do things thier own way. And like they need another reason to make money. All 4 are set for life. I just hope they really give it back to the phans for this last tour and "go out on top" as Trey put it.
Danbird, demonsweat is a troll. Just click his/her name, read the other posts (theyre all rude), and also notice how recently he registered, and he has already made this many posts. 20 posts in 2 hours, all very rude. He is just trying to get us to argue.
No honey, I'm just trying to get you to think. Think about this. my handle is an allyous. a fake. I know all about whats been being posted around here. I just want to spice up the conversation. It's fun, don't be so scared. and go see ween.
oh yes, I may add kittyfairy, I just noticed you have all of 4 posts. are you even involved here or what? who are you to talk about my posts when you don't even post. jeesh!! you registered 3 days agao. I've been postin and a lurkin and a readin hear since like late March early April or somethin. once again, I jeesh you!!!!
It's not the quantity, it's the quality of the posts. So demonsweat's at 0 in my book. Why do people find it necessary to try and amuse themselves at everyone's expense? If you think things are boring on this board, don't F-ing read it or post. Do us all a favor and go post on the IMDB boards, and start as much trouble as your little heart desires. And if you really are just drunk and blowing off steam, then I feel sorry that you have to be beligerant. People here are kynd, try and do the same.
Anyways, back to topic.....if anyone watched the interview on PBS, Tres said that one of the main reasons for the breakup was that they were becoming too corporate (the cd cover example he gave). Too many people had imput on what they were trying to do and with all of the people they were supporting on staff, they had to compromise their ideas. Sounds a little too much like the Grateful Dead to me, right before Jerry died. They say that jerry was only touring b/c they needed to support the "touring machine" they had become. He had to be helped up the stairs at the last show in chicago. Maybe this is tres' way of keeping his progressive ideas, and sanity, intact. Anyways, it still sucks and what do i know?

I saw the Charlie Rose interview and came away from it saying, "Okay, I can respect that decision. Sure it sucks, but wouldn't you want to change jobs after 21 years too? This guy's just burnt on this one."
Besides, their material had been slipping since the late 90s; the "scene" at the shows was not what it once was; the tours were not the epics they had once been.
This was a justified mercy-killing.
There will be another Band. Someone will rise to take their spot at the head of the table. It won't be the same, but it will still be good. It will be different.
And ultimately, I think it will be good for the whole Jam Music thing that's happening right now. It forces us to look around and think about who to go see now. That's "forced consciousness expansion" as Dr. Thompson once said. Phish, like The Grateful Dead before them, are going to be remembered as musicians whose art was a springboard that launched a whole generation of folks on lifelong musical explorations.
In a few years everyone's gonna look back and be talking about where their minds/musical tastes went after Phish--and it's gonna be a hell of a ride.
See you down the road and just in front of the soundboard.
And ultimately, I think it will be good for the whole Jam Music thing that's happening right now.
I agree. I'm totally bummed about the break-up, but Stanton Moore made a good point in an article I read. He said that he thought the whole Jam Band thing was becoming saturated. "Around the time of the first Bonnaroo, Phish was on their hiatus and Phil Lesh and Friends was really the biggest thing happening. Now a few years later," he said "Phish is back out and The Dead are touring again. It's almost too much. It has become saturated" He went on to say some new bands appearing in this genre were a little sloppy, thus making the whole genre a little less polished.
So with the exit of Phish, I think to the genre as a whole, it will do some good and lesser known bands will be forced to step up their caliber of play.
Nevertheless...the whole situation still makes me sad.
I didn't see the Charlie Rose interview, so let me preface with that. It seems to me that if too many people were getting thier hands into Phish's business, that they have no one to blame but themselves for that. I mean, they should have enough clout in the industry to do whatever they want to do creatively. There have been other bands with much publicized struggles with the corporate machine (Wilco, Radiohead). In the end, if the band is strong, thier creative wishes should win out. I don't know all the details of Phish's situation so I guess I can't judge fully what was going on. I don't blame them at all for stepping aside, after all it has been 21 years. I just think they could have done a whole lot more for "the scene". I guess we'll see where it all goes from here. Who do you think is gonna pick up the torch now? String Cheese is the obvious choice, but I guess they are going to "corporate" now also, with Lollapoluza and all. I really don't see a problem with a band trying to expand thier fanbase. It can be done without "selling out". I really just hope they pour it on for this last tour. I think all the phans deserve it.
When Trey said "belive me I love Phish more than anyone out there," you just have to think about it and take a step back. He is doing this because he loves Phish and to be honest I don't think he was that down about anything. He seemed gracious to the phans, thankful, and retrospective. I will miss them.

I just read an interview with Fishman's dad and he told the reporter that when he talked to Jon, he said that 'We're going to play our hearts out on this tour.' Phish knows how important every show on this tour will be, and theyre not going to let anyone down. And to whoever was talking about greed: that is exactly why they stopped. They didnt want to be doing it just for the money still. What do you think would make more money? Constantly touring even when theyre not really into it or doing one reunion tour? OK then. They are so obviously not doing this for the money. Theyre not going to make any now!!!

That's not true. There are some very sad but realistic and heartfelt reasons for their breakup. Also, they do not need to pull this kind of stunt to get people to buy tickets for their shows. They have no problem selling tickets.

i agree,i think this has nothing to do with corp america or anyone else for that matter...they are doing this cause they themselves had enough and its obviously not as pleasing to tour for 4 seasons every year. they have other things they rather b doing. oh well
no one can ever take away the music they made or your memories while they were making it

I just wish I had a few more memories in the bank, at this point. 2 more shows left for me. I'm sure they'll be the best ones yet.
Memories of Phish shows are a funny thing. Mine are all like Monet or Van Gogh paintings--they're pretty and fun, but more than a little indistinct and quite fuzzy around the edges.

It happens, man. Bands break up. Whether it be because one person has a problem with someone else in the band, someone else is a user, or, like in the case of Phish, all the members (With the exception of Mike) are just tired. People may say they know the cause of it all and who's to blame for the fall of Phish, but in the end it just happens. I hate to sound negative, but I'm a realist. I don't think Phish will get back together anytime soon. If anything it'll be many years from now.
