Wow...i wasn't aware that "Ya Mar" was a cover... Who did it originally then??? So i'm going w/ Loving Cup (i've always loved that tune) and the one timer from Big Cypress' afternoon set on 12-31-99 "After Midnight" Anyone that was there or has heard it knows what i'm talking about...it was pure madness, and so tight.

Good call with soul shakedown party, at the Albany show during the 20th anniversary run they played an awesome Good Times, Bad Times by the best band in the world

-abridged from phish.net FAQ- Gordo went on a cruise to the Carribean and saw the Mustangs in Freeport. He bought their album and decided Ya Mar was the only song worth covering, so they did. And it was good.
I always told people it was the Thunderbirds. Wrong car, I guess.
My favorite cover is Ya Mar. It has a good vibe goin' on. (For all of you that didn't take Spanish in high school, yamar is a verb meaning "to call")
Trey said that "When the Circus..." is the one song he wishes he had written himself. I think I like the original version better. Los Lobos has this burst of acoustic guitar at the beginning that I love. Phish does an amazing job, though.
I think Rocky Top might be "Traditional" but I could definitely be wrong.
I like Ya Mar, Roses are Free and When the Circus..., and I had a particularly beautiful Loving Cup encore experience at one of my first shows, but I think Crosseyed and Painless is my favorite.
The 10/31/96 "Remain in the Light" Halloween costume is definitely one of my favorite shows. I think the Phish covering Talking Heads thing strikes this amazing balance that emphasizes the strengths of both bands. The Remain in the Light set brings out new layers of potential in the original material (one of the great albums of all time), and brings out a rythmic, African-influenced, groove based inclination in Phish that I think was pretty novel at the time. I think covering Remain in the Light had a huge impact on where Phish went from '97 on, right up through Trey's current stuff.
I thought they did a "good" job on Terrapin, but my favorite is the 20+ min. long Boogie On Reggae Woman. That is just the most groovin tune and no disrespect to Stevie, but Phish took this to a whole new level of phunky.

I love Trey's thoughts on the subject of Phish's funkiness.
I remember reading a quote of his once where the band came off stage after what, by all accounts, was an Ultra Funky set and he looked at someone else in the band and said something to the effect of: 'That was great! We were almost as funky as James Brown on his worst night.' And apparently the band agreed with his assessment.
Has anyone else heard/read this? I distinctly remember the gist of it, but not the direct quote, but just the thought of it cracks me up.

This exchange is in the "Bittersweet Motel" documentary, and I think he is talking to Fishman. I remember that they come off as extremely dorky while having that conversation. I don't think the director of that movie had a very high opinion of Phish.

I totally agree! They also do a great job on Layla!

I would have to go with the miracle; "Terrapin Station" maybe thats too rare and does not count. Id go with "Ya Mar" for its carribean beat or "Crosseyed and Painless..."
