Ok, Grateful Dead > Phish > ______ Im thinking it will most likely be TAB honestly. I'm sure SCI and moe. will begin playing bigger venues, but it will be interesting to see if there is a "next band" Thoughts?
TAB would be the next step. As far as completely unrelated to Phish, I am not sure. SCI doesn't have the caliber talent that Phish does. They're amazing but I don't see them following the Dead and Phish. Sound Tribe or moe. are my picks. As STS9 begins to really come together and play as a group, they can become the next big thing -- if they want it.

I really hope its moe. also. Theyve paid their dues and theyre sound is really coming together nicely. Im not big on STS9, the whole trance thing isnt really for me. Its kind of like the Disco Biscuits. Its cool, but i dont think i could listen to it sober
I think TAB is the logical guess, but they will need to come up with new material pretty consistently for the next couple of years in order to draw the touring phans. SCI will be the interim band until TAB fills its repetoire of songs. I thought about other bands such as MOE and Bisco, but for some reason I don't think they'll appeal to the masses the way Phish did. I hope I'm wrong, cause I want to hit the Vanilla Ice tour with all 90,000 of you for the next 10 years of my life. Bummm Bummmm Bummm budubummm bummmmm......Ice Ice Baby ;D
I think only a segment of Phish's phanbase will follow them. Some of us phans have a harder time with all of Trey's guitar wanking in the TAB. And that second half big-band improv stuff at the first 'Roo, Pee-euw!

WSP!!!!!!!!!! I think this is the logical progression. They have a much bigger fanbase then I once thought. Saw them for their New Years Shows and they blew me away.
I do agree with pigsnzen that there is large portion of Phish phans who don't care for TAB. I personally think Trey is going get more mainstream. Not change his music, but he is following the footsteps of Dave. I think Trey himself, but not his music, will go mainstream and draw a different crowd.
For anyone that didn't watch the Charlie Rose interview with Trey. . . he asked Trey who he thought might followin Phish's footsteps and even he couldn't answer that.
I don't think we can know who will fill in the blank. We're talking about a band touring for 20+ years and changing live music yet again. In the Charlie Rose interview, the link between GD and Phish exists because Trey saw The Grateful Dead 10 or so times and it influenced how Phish toured and played. The next band would have to be heavily influenced by Phish. So really it could be any band that has seen and admired Phish and thier influence. So everyone, start practicing your craft, cause your band could be the next Phish.
I was just reading an article in Rolling Stone about Phish's breakup.
"a two-day festival in Coventry, Vermont, on August 14th and 15th. That gig will now be Phish's farewell. Upwards of 65,000 fans are expected to hear the band bid goodbye to its old material. "I'd like to revisit that stuff one more time," Anastasio says of the upcoming tour. "But I just can't play that shit anymore. If that makes somebody angry, I'm sorry. I gotta do something new. I cannot spend my entire life going around the country playing 'You Enjoy Myself.'"
I mean... referring to his music as "sh!t"? Great. Thanks Trey. I'm so glad that I devoted countless hours driving to 20+ Phish shows over the years, spent hundreds of dollars to support the music you created, which by the way, your phans love to death. And now I see that it's nothing but sh!t you can't play anymore. So sorry that you can't go around the country playing YEM anymore.
Ya know what, that's the kind of stuff right there that makes me want to sell my SPAC tickets. C'mon dude. Don't forget the phans who put you on the map. Show some respect.

Trey definitely could of found a better way to put his feelings, but ultimately I think the decision to end and the reasons he expresses in the RS interview DO respect the fans. He's been playing YEM (just as an example) for 15+ years. I'm sure he is VERY proud of it as a piece of music and has had the time of his life playing it hundreds of times. I think that he feels that it would be disrepectful to the fans to continue playing it if he's gotten to the point where the emotion and intentions aren't the same anymore.
Many fans of "non jam-band" music would be very frustrated and dissappointed if they went to their favorite band's concert and the band didn't play their biggest hit song. Fans in that situation might feel that the band was being disrepectful, arrogant and insensitive to the desires of their fanbase. For a variety of reasons, the jam scene has an opposite kind of culture. People are on tour, listen to recordings of shows and WANT the bands to play a different set every night. One of the reasons for this is because it keeps the show fresh, new and exciting for the band itself as well as the fans. The bands appreciate the freedom the fans allow them, the fans appreciate the variety the bands provide and it creates a great cycle where everyone involved can become more integrated into the experience than they might in a different musical environment. If Trey has figured out over the last 4 years that he isn't feeling that vibe after doing the Phish thing for 20 years, I think it is respectful of him to be honest about it and end it before Phish becomes something that isn't worthy of the name.
I guess I'm saying that it seems like there is an analogy between an audience demanding of a Pop act that they play their hit songs and an audience demanding that the members of Phish tour and play Phish songs. In the end, if any artist does something contrary to what their fans want or expect they are going to make some people angry and alienate some of their fans. All you have to do is listen to old Phish shows to understand that Trey has respect and appreciation for Phish, the music, the fans and everything around it. Its evident in the quality and the feeling of the music, and thats one of the main reasons why we all fell in love with it.
right on Faletti!!! I think Trey has a valid point about playing the same songs over and over... for those of you who have mundane, repetitive jobs, you know exactly what he is talking about. This is his job, he is looking to change, any one of us would get sick of sticking widget A into slot B after 20 years....not that their music is cookie cutter, or the same every time, because it isn't (not even close) but to play that same lick night after night, I could easily see losing the enthusiasm for it that it once held. By the way, Widespread is the heir apparent, but don't be surprised if in 10 more years they throw it in as well....
Ya know what, that's the kind of stuff right there that makes me want to sell my SPAC tickets. C'mon dude. Don't forget the phans who put you on the map. Show some respect.
TAB has yet to impress me.....i have only listened to a few of their songs (on disk, not live) and haven't heard a reason to drive 3 states to hear them......like i did phish......can anyone recommend some songs to me??.....
i'm trying to move on but the void seems impossible to fill at the moment......i enjoy moe's music a lot, but i haven't seen them live yet either.....next sunday will help me decide my future moe tours
For TAB suggestions, I would say Ether Sunday, Tube Top Flop, and Mozambique. I don't think there is a reason to drive three states to see TAB...they aren't Phish, but to Trey's credit...he's not trying to be. If you're a member of LivePhish.com then I would suggest downloading the two shows from The Warsaw in San Fransisco, they're both very different from each other but really good.
The void is a huge one and it's going to take a while to fill it.

Isnt WSP done for a while/good? They may not even come back. I kind of found their stuff somewhat boring/repetitive anyway. (sorry to you hardcore spreadheads) Maybe I havent listened to enough stuff... Im going to see moe. tomorrow and I'm really psyched. I could definitely see myself traveling to see moe. , especially if they get some more songs added to their repetoire.
Word....Trey's trying so hard not to insult the phans while just taking little jabs at us. That said I agree with the decision (like it matters) but end it on a high note dude...
Also my vote is for the Spin Doctors!
and if you want to buy me flowers JUST GO AHEAD NOW
my vote is for sci... they probably wont be as big as phish for as long but their fan base is definitely grwoing very fast... i dont think moe. really has what it takes... i saw them live (not at roo) and i was very unimpressed... i heard that it was a bad show but i just felt like i went to a pop rock concert... i dont plan on going out of my way to see moe. again i found there music kind of boring and they definitely were lacking in the jam area... sorry for all the moe. fans but i wouldnt even put them in the same category as phish

WSP just took the year off. It's better then giving up. They been playing just as long as Phish and seem to draw a crowd that rivals a Phish crowd (still no comparison).
I've seen basically every major jam band and I don't think that any of them are close to having the staying power of Phish. I see the jam band scene changing dramatically in the next few years. I think you can already start to see it changing.
