Is it just me or does this new album kind of bite...i love every phish album they have put out, but this one seems to be very "poppy" or something. They sound more like the Wallflowers than the band we have come to love. Anyways, maybe that is the reason that they decided to break. It is hard to keep being so creative and original for so long. Who knows...i just hope they play this tour as a tribute to their previous work and not an album promotion.
After one listen this sounds to me like one of their best albums. I especially like Undermind, Song I Heard the Ocean Sing, Access Me, Scents and Subtle Sounds, Tommorrow's Song and Grind. I think its wonderful that there are songs by each band member on the disc (though I don't particularly like Page's) and love that they finally stuck an a cappela vocal track on an album. I really like how they kept some of the raw/unfinished sound of Round Room but refined it a bit more. I think this is probably one of the most coherent and cohesive albums they have ever made, although it doesn't really change the fact that recording is clearly not their strong suit as a band.
Alright, i would like to update my my opinion on the new album.....i have been listening to it non-stop and i watched the DVD that came with it. The album is much better than i originally stated. I still like the older stuff better, but who doesn't. Anyways, if you get a chance to watch the supplemental DVD it is definately worth the 20-some minutes. Think Bittersweet Motel, but shorter.
The album takes adjusting to. I enjoy Round Room a lot, and I think Undermind is even better. It's not like Lawn Boy or any early stuff, but I think it is just as good except in a different way. The album deserves four out of five stars. The DVD is cool too. I love Fish's van door drum studio. I wouldn't mind them playing a few songs off this new album during their tour. They already played "Crowd Control" during their run in Vegas so I guess more songs from this album will be played on tour. The best songs are "The Connection," "A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing," "Access Me," and "Gring".

My impression was that this would be the album that would let non-phans get into Phish--sort of a back door for the more pop-oriented crowd.
In fact, I'll put forth that if you wanted to turn your little bro/sis onto Phish then you'd give 'em Undermind this week, Round Room next week, and Farmhouse the week after. Then sort of continue to go backwards through the catalog until you get to the really good stuff.
As far as the album itself, I think there's a couple of good tunes (the first three tracks are very nice). The vocal harmonies throughout are tighter than they have been on other releases. Grind is great, though I admit that I've a soft spot for their a capella stuff.
All the songs are short, just about the perfect length for the radio airplay that the band has never had. There's only one or two maybe that break the five-minute barrier, I think. I do think there is potential for some of them to be fun live when they're really jammed out, though.
On the whole, though, this CD isn't going to push aside Lawnboy, Rift, or Hampton in my collection. It's interesting and sort of fun, but it's not the Phish that we really know and love and without a couple more tours to really grow the songs into something more, they're just going to be a footnote to the band's already rich legacy.
