Friends, I can't get out of my mind the recent tsunami disaster and the many people affected. Although the tragedy's halfway around the world from me, I'm as obsessed with learning as much as I can as I was with 9/11. I'm headed to Thailand in March, and as a result have become more familiar with the area. Maybe that's why I keep thinking about. And a friend of my brother's is missing from the area and presumed dead; maybe that's part of it too.
The devastation in the region is enormous. The number of dead is approaching 60,000, millions are homeless, and survivors have often lost all their possessions as well as their livelihoods (many are fishermen and their families). Recovery costs are currently expected to be $10 *billion* or more.
Makes a person stop short, forget for a minute the annoying boss or the frustrating traffic or the displeasure at something (anything), and feel humbled and lucky as hell.
