There's hardly any posting here for weeks, I come back from work and there's a 56 post thread!
I frequent quite a few message boards on a variety of subjects and I've always been amazed at how civil this one remains without any hands-on moderation. Every other board I go to either has a ton of personal attacks and off-subject bickering, or has a moderator with an iron fist who deletes and bans any post or poster that's off-subject or gets into pointless back and forth bickering. I really hope that this board remains free of both.
Everyone has always been extremely open-minded, civil and generally nice on this board and I really hope that doesn't change. There has been plenty of disagreement and a variety of viewpoints (even on politics of all things) but the general good vibe has always been there.
Obviously, noone has to listen to me, but I would just like to ask everybody to stop posting about posters if the subject is supposed to be Bonnaroo or music or a band. Take it to the Off-Topic topic if you want to share an opinion about a poster (and please try to be nice if you do that).
All the name-calling and accusations really seem useless to me.
I don't think calling someone a troll or telling people to ignore someone really accomplishes anything. If they really are trying to be inflammatory for the sake of it, then it means they've succeeded. If they are not trying to do that but are just trying to share their point of view on something, then calling them a troll is actually an inflammatory thing to do.
Telling someone they don't know anything about music or that they are ignorant or are a hypocrite without explaining why is just pointless. I wish people wouldn't do it on this board, but its not like I can do anything about it.
Definitive statements like: "Tom Petty and Beck do not belong at Bonnaroo" and "Bonnaroo is only about jambands" are probably going to be recieved and discussed much more politely if they are framed as opinions (which they are) and not facts. "I think Bonnaroo is only about jambands" goes down much better than "Bonnaroo is only about jambands". Maybe it seems silly because it should be obvious it is an opinion, but I think its true.
If I think someone is being inflammatory with their posts, my move is to be cool, maybe explain to them why I think so, and give it some time. The fact is that one poster could come in and effectively ruin the board if they wanted to, so there's no reason to stoke that fire.
Sorry if I sound like a d!ck in this post, just some thoughts.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I personally don't join many message boards (actually this is the only one), and I'd hate to have all the fun taken out of it. Let's face it, this really is just for fun.
I don't really take back the ignore thing I said yesterday. I was on when this person had 1 post to their name and then all of a sudden just bashing ppl left and right. To me the person had only one soul purpose to stir things up which is not cool. I could care less if I agree with the person or not, just state your opinion and let it be.I just up and left and came back later when the mess was over. I have been here with the borads created and I enjoy the peraceful vibe and the ppl here and it bugs me that someone would just come on to ruin that vibe. Be respectful to other and others well respect you, that how I feel.
