Hey, I've noticed that a lot of us are from the Chicago area. Anyone interested in getting together and seeing some shows before we head to Manchester? I've got a handful of buddies from the area going down to the Roo, but I'm a fan of the more, the merrier, and since not everyone you're with always wants to see the same shows you do, it'd be good to know a variety of people to be able to have some other potential showviewing compatriots. That and a few other folks with whom to imbibe readily.
Im not from Chicago but I am from around chicago, IM about 2 hourts away in Kalamazoo, MI and plannin on goin to Bonnaroo. I actually met a bunch of kids last year from chicago so that would be tight to meet some more, hit me up, peace...
Revolution is not something fixed in ideology, nor is it something fashioned to a particular decade. It is a perpetual process embedded in the human spirit. -Abbie Hoffman
Hey guys -- Tea Leaf Green at the Abbey Pub tonight. I'll be there with a couple of friends and there are a few good folks from the JamFanForum site (jamfanforum.com) who will be there also.
Thanks much for the heads up on Tea Leaf Green. I am strongly considering heading out there tonight (this involves stroking my chin and furrowing my brow). $10, doesn't appear to be sold out... I may see you there.
Browsing the Bonnaroo band's website, I noticed Cat Power (late February) and The Magic Number (April 1) shows in Chicago between now and Bonnaroo. I'm sure there are plenty others.
My favorite local stuff is Nicholas Baron (I think he's playing every Thursday at the Elbo Room), Abstract Giants (live band hip-hop) and Bumpus (funk!).
If you ever find yourself on the near north side (the Double Door, or especially the Empty Bottle) I highly, highly recomend that you dine at a relatively new chicken shack called Feed. It's on California and Chicago (close to the Empty Bottle, a little out of the way otherwise). It's amazingly good. You'll spend $6-$8 and be stuffed and satisfied. I think you're pretty much out of luck if you're not a carnivore. I know its off-topic, but my dinner was sooooo good last night (1/4 chicken white meat, corn pudding and fried okra) I had to share. mmmmm.
Thanks for the lowdown Ka Mai! Just yesterday it was solidified that I'll be leaving the Chicago scene soon to head for Denver, but I might find time to check out this Nicholas Baron cat.
If you do make it out to the TLG show, keep an eye out for a diverse little group of folks congregating. I'm average height, with a shortly cropped amish looking beard. I'll be there with my buddy and his gf (she looks really young) and like I said, some good folks from JFF should be meeting up also.
I'm not from anywhere near Chicago but I would be at this TLG show in a second if I was. Anyone in Chicago who can go to this show would probably have a great time. If you saw TLG at last years 'roo then you know how hard they can throwdown.
It looks like Nick Baron is settled into his weekly Elbo Room gig (mostly Thursday, some weeks like 3/10 its Friday). The show last week was unbelievable. Nick Baron's Ring of Fire cover blew my mind. He has his horn section back and it is back to a very similar vibe that it had in the late 90's when I started seeing him.
This weekend:
Friday: I'll be at the Double Door tonight for Bumpus and opener 56 Hope Road. Bumpus is one of my three cherished local acts (w/ Nick Baron and Abstract Giants). Bad ass funk band. Plenty of Rock n' roll too. Get political sometimes. Rachael Yamagata used to sing/play with them (real different from her solo stuff though). I guarantee a good time. I don't remember how I ended up seeing 56 Hope Road a year ago, and I don't remember much about them, but I did post a drunken rave here when I got home so I'm considering their presence on the bill a good thing.
Sunday: Award for the coolest thing happening in Chicago this weekend goes to: Quasar Wut Wut performing their score to silent film masterpiece "The General" (w/ the film) at the Darkroom.
I saw this at Northwestern a year ago and it is a great time.
Quasar Wut Wut: I've only seen them playing this score but damn they seem cool. I got turned away from a capacity filled Hideout the one time I tried to see them otherwise. quasarwut.gloriousnoise.com/#
The Darkroom: My favorite bar/club (not much of a club guy) in the city. Great atmosphere. Great Belgian beer. Pretty cool clientel. Always cool new art (it's "photography themed", I guess its supposed to feel like a darkroom in there). Dinner at Feed described upthread is the correct move here. www.darkroombar.com
The General: Buster Keaton is my favorite director/star/stuntman/leading man/action hero/comedian/all around film genius of all time. Silent film is an acquired taste, and his humor is pretty gentle and subtle in a lot of ways. Although I have other favorites, The General (1927) is the one most widely considered his masterpiece. This live-band-score thing is the perfect way to dive into the geniusy surrealist wonderment of one of the great American artists of the 20th century. I shouldn't hype it that much, because The General was the first Keaton I saw and I was underwhelmed. It is an acquired taste but it is far more accessible seeing with a crowd (like all good comedy). I'm changing my avatar back to Buster in honor of this event.
EDIT: found a General still, which is actually from what I think is one of the most beautiful, sublime, poetic shots in all of cinema. Buster is sitting on that metal bar that connects two train wheels (the train is stopped). His girl comes over and dumps him. He's bummed. The train slowly starts going, and Buster starts to glide up and down with the train part he's on, but he doesn't notice because he's so forlorn. It's a really beautiful image. Right before the train hits a tunnel, he notices he's moving , does a double take and jumps off shocked. It's funny ha ha.
Posting this here also in case anyone's interested -- only $6...
I picked up a ticket to see Jason Molina (Magnolia Electric Co, Songs:Ohia) this coming Monday at Schuba's here in Chicago. He has had a Monday residency the whole month of February and this will be the last night.
Field Music (England) label: Absolutely Kosher, Memphis Industries And Chicago's Own...The Its! label: PWMD Recent Photo
FIELD MUSIC are next in the line of tastemaking acts, alongside THE FUTUREHEADS and MAXIMO PARK, coming out of Northern England. And, thus far, the excitement surrounding them has been frenzied and hyperbolic. MOJO has called their debut full length "intriguing", while NME declared it "genius" and Time Out London has described it as "perfect crystalline pop - this is a melodic gem." Spunky 'retrofitted' rock group THE ITS! will play second, a group that blends together "irresistible hooks, dynamic changes, and raw energy to create an addictive sound forged by an eclectic array of musical influences." RECENT PHOTO will be supporting their debut release The Monster Within, an album of strange and compelling pop that is cautiously unusual and very much their own.
