I'm thinking about getting a new digital camera before roo and I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions. I'm looking to spend around $200-$300 maybe up to $400, but it would really have to be worth it. I don't know a lot about digital cameras so I'm looking more for a point and shoot.

I'm very happy with the 4 meg Kodak LS743 I got last year. Uses a rechargable lithium battery that lasted the whole weekend last year. Be sure to bring a good, dry ziplock baggie for your expensive new toy...
I don't have a nice digital camera yet, but when I do buy one, one of the features I'm going to insist on is for the camera to be ready to shoot the moment you switch it on. My brother recently got a new camera and he wanted this feature because he's a pilot and sometimes see something out of the window he wants a quick shot of. And playing around with his camera, I could see that's an invaluable feature. A lot of digital cameras take a few seconds to "boot up" or whatever, and many of them also have a slight delay between you pushing the button and the shutter actually closing... which I find annoying.
Just thought I'd mention it here so you can think about whether that's important to you. Trust me, after you've used both kinds, the ones that aren't instantly "ready" become quite annoying...
That does sound handy because I like to take a lot of nature shots, and sometimes the animals don't want to sit and pose for you as you wait for your camera to boot up. Do you know if this feature has some fancy digital camera term, so if I'm doing some online shopping I can get an idea of the camera's that offer it.
The terms I've seen are "start up time" (time from pressing the on button to snapping a pic) and "shutter lag" (time from pressing the shutter button to snapping the pic). Also www.dcresource.com has good reviews as well.
i usually check www.bensbargains.net for deals on electronics and other stuff. there's always cameras on there. might be a good place to look for a few weeks to get an idea on what's available.
