I can't believe the deal that the $45 tickets were. $130 for a three day pass now going to $150. I just don't think I can swing it at the moment, especially not knowing the schedule and if I can get the Friday off.
Wilco + my Quannum hip hop=I'm there
It's looking very much like I'll be doing the Intonation-Pitchfork-Lollapalooza circuit (I can walk to all three festivals from my house on a nice day for God's sake) this summer, I just hope that the budgetary/ticket availability gods smile upon my circumstances.
If I can secure tickets and the dates, this could heavily influence some of my Bonnaroo schedule conflict decisions ("well, I'll be see them in August). Quite a bit of crossover.

I agree that this lineup should help me decide which shows to see at the Roo. With that said, I'm impressed that they managed not to overlap the festivals too much. By my count, Palooza's initial lineup and Roo's current lineup have only 11 overlapping bands. They are:
1. Death Cab for Cutie 2. Common 3. Sonic Youth 4. Matisyahu 5. Umphreys McGee 6. Nickel Creek 7. Blues Traveler 8. Disco Biscuits 9. The Dresden Dolls 10. Andrew Bird 11. Matt Costa
I think we can anticipate that there will be more overlap than this with 47 bands to announce, but, as of right now, the overlap is not so significant as to make it a choice of one or the other.
What an incredible summer for music this is going to be. I'm so glad to be living at such a volatile time for the development of sound.
If you read the Who do you want added thread, Lollapalooza really has ALOT of the bands people have been suggesting for Bonnaroo. I think I might pick up a ticket myself.
Okay, so after the initial stunnedness of seeing Manu Chao on that list (the guy was rumored to have turned down as much as 2 million to headline ACL the past few years), the list isn't quite as impressive as I initially anticipated it being. Lots of solid acts, but outside of landing Manu Chao, there's no Oysterhead reunion or Radiohead or established rock legends like Bonnaroo.
Granted, I think they've really only announced one headliner: Manu Chao. I assume the other day will be Smashing Pumpkins. Still, what makes Lollapalooza any different than an afternoon sampling the new cd section of your local indie record shop?

It's like they tied up the clerk, hijacked virtually the entire indie section, put a gun to the head of a few unwilling acts to mix it up, loaded them into their sinister Lollamobile, and dumped them into Grant Park on a beautiful summer weekend. The amount of great acts is what's so impressive. Also, there are quite a few announcements to come.
Initial shock over or not, that's a great lineup. I'm not as interested in it as I am bonnaroo, but that's because I'm not as into indie rock as I am say Jam Bands, Rock Legends, and some JamGrass. Either way you go Bonnaroo is going to be the same awesome festival it always is, or you could go with lollapalooza. It has a great lineup for those who are into it.
Palooza has had problems selling tickets in the past, but I don't think they will this year. Also, take into consideration some of those artists may drop out. Some may think they are headlining the fest, when they are not.

Nice line up, lots of solid acts and lots of good obscure bands that people should check out, deadboy & the Elephantmen and the redwalls for starters...Wish I could go but its just to much to spend. I would go for sure if it was a camping style fest like bonnaroo....
Last year they had live stream of lolla on the SBC blue room website for those of us who will not make it. Unfortunatly you didnt have a chioce of what bands to watch but still cool. Hook your PC up to your TV and stereo and it is really good quality.
At the risk of sounding completely ignorant - Who is Manu Chao and why haven't I heard of him? Can someone give a brief catchup lesson and maybe some tracks I need to listen to? thanks -

I second that thought, I've never heard of this guy. And one key thing for you guys to remember, Lollapalooza takes place in downtown Chicago, a far cry from the sweet fields of Manchester Tennesee. This is a totally different vibe, and will have a ton of arseholes attending. And just because Q101 will be pimping this show, you will have ump-teen thousand little girls and crap running around. I'm not sayin I am not gonna go, because I prolly will, but it's just gonna be another show, and thats it, regardless of the lineup. BONNNAAAROOOOOO!!!!
All I can say is WOW WOW WOW... what a lineup! The hamster wheels in my head are spinning at warp speed to figure out a way to attend this one. After renting a vacation home and buying tickets for Coachella, then airfare and tickets for Bonnaroo, I don't think there will be much left in the ol' concert slush fund to finance a trip to Chicago (even though it is one of my favorite cities).... but wow, what a summer it would be if I could do all three.... (four including the yet unannounced Street Scene in July) August is still a ways off.... maybe if I start scheming and saving, I can figure out a way to pull it off...
Oh Sh!t man..... they just announced that Street Scene is going to be the same weekend as Lollapalooza (Aug 4-5). So much for my COACHAROOSTREETAPALOOZA idea....
Dude, what a huge mistake on street scene's part, because most of the bands I'd be hoping to see at SS are going to be up in Chicago that weekend.... arrrrggggh!!!!

The man is one of the biggest rock stars in the world. I use the term rock lightly because his sound is a blend of several kinds of music. He came up in the late 80s to early 90s in an alternative french rock group called Manu Negra. He then went solo and blew up in a massive way with his first album, Clandestino and continued his success with that album's successor, Esperanza. His sound blends French, Spanish, rock, jazz, blues...I really don't know how to describe it other than it sounds like Manu Chao. He's a leftist and is huge in South America and Europe and, pretty much, the entire world except for the U.S. Think of him as being like High Definition TV or soccer, things that we Americans have been slow to pick up on. Anyway, he's pretty militant about his political beliefs, so it's been difficult to get him to play the states. ACL has been offering all kinds of cash to play for years (a standing offer, I believe) but he's refused them every year. To be quite honest, landing him in festival promoter circles has become a bit of a holy grail. And Perry Ferrell, the bastard, seems to have pulled a coup here.
If you're familiar with the new Amadou & Mariam album, he produced it. A song like "Senegal Fast Food" might give you a basic idea of what his stuff sounds like. The presence of Amadou & Mariam combined with the Lollapalooza addition makes me hopeful that he might drop in on their set at roo. However, I'm not getting my hopes up. A Manu Chao performance would pretty much make the fest for me.

Gnarls Barkley's MySpace page included The Strokes when they listed the key bands playing. Think this was a slip? I do. Count on the Strokes to be involved.
^^Wouldn't surprise me. My roommate went to their Austin concert and said the new album (which personally I hate) has added a lot to their live show. Doesn't surprise me. It sounded like the songs would probably translate better live...

I'm gonna see them next weekend. I'll give a full report...

I have a hard time believing that the red hot chili peppers would play any festival and not be a headliner. And I don't see them getting replaced by a half reunion of the smashing pumpkins(who were never as big as the peppers anyway).
Nice pics, Specialist. How bout the strokes light show? Very nice indeed. And as for Lolla, it seems that if Coheed got taken off, they'd have to add some more big names, or at least one, to make up for it.

Ha. A Pumpkins reunion would easily outdraw the Peppers. RHCP are probably bigger globally, but stateside, I can say with a fair amount of confidence that the Pumpkins have a bigger following. It's the kind of draw that people would solely base their decision on going. Combine that with the fact that Chi-Town is their home turf, and RHCP would probably be more than willing to give up headliner status. (Hell, they opened for Foo Fighters on the Learn to Fly tour. These guys don't have big egos when it comes to that kind of thing). That said, from what I gathered from interviews with Coorgan, he wanted to a full reunion or nothing at all.
