I have a hard time believing that the red hot chili peppers would play any festival and not be a headliner. And I don't see them getting replaced by a half reunion of the smashing pumpkins(who were never as big as the peppers anyway).
Ha. A Pumpkins reunion would easily outdraw the Peppers. RHCP are probably bigger globally, but stateside, I can say with a fair amount of confidence that the Pumpkins have a bigger following. It's the kind of draw that people would solely base their decision on going. Combine that with the fact that Chi-Town is their home turf, and RHCP would probably be more than willing to give up headliner status. (Hell, they opened for Foo Fighters on the Learn to Fly tour. These guys don't have big egos when it comes to that kind of thing). That said, from what I gathered from interviews with Coorgan, he wanted to a full reunion or nothing at all.
I forgot to factor in the home town show element of it, so you are probably right. I guess I'd just much rather have the peppers headlining. I dont see the huge deal with the pumpkins getting back together, its not like they were at the top of their game when they were last around anyway.
^^^I don't know. I wouldn't mind seeing them come back together. Wouldn't hurt.
I love the Chili Peppers, but they've always struck me as a band who'd struggle to carry a festival. I'd put Kanye in the same category as an artist whose huge, but not necessarily the kind of draw that would get my ass to another state for a 3 day festival. Which is part of my overall deal with the Lollapalooza lineup. It's pretty tight, but there are a handful of acts on the bill that make me think I would be interested in going.
Here's another Lolla con and 'Roo pro...NO CAMPING!!! Sheesh, in addition to your ticket price/travel you've gotta get a hotel in chicago for a weekend!
While the Lolla lineup looks great- I think there is one really HUGE difference that hasn't been emphasized enough: set length. That was the one thing that probably made the biggest impression on me at Roo-- that all of these bands were getting full-figured sets. It was seriously like watching 80 bands do a headlining-length gig with little pressure not to go over a bit on their time.
Lolla is insane about that-- quick-cut sets, strict policies on not overlapping and nowhere near the relaxed, communal vibe. Would I go to Lolla if I could? Sure. But Roo is hands down the better-run and more impacting festival.
So, take a look at those bands that are doing both- and if you're going to Roo, be happy that you'll see a real set by them, not a truncated experience.

Is this really the case? From looking at Roo's and Lolla's schedules from last year, it appeared to me that a lot of bands on both ends were getting an hour to an hour and a half. True, Bonnaroo has the late night shows with longer sets, but most of the daytime stuff seemed the same.
Yes, it is the case-- and I'm not sure what part you're doubting. I think the difference is that ALL of Roo's bands get the respect and attention of an hour or more in sets. Not just some. Yes, at Lolla many get full sets, but not all. What I love about Roo is that even if I go to see Kermit Ruffins play trumpet, I know I'll be seeing a full show of his even with his band as a relative small act. And then you just pointed out yourself that nearly a dozen bands get gigantic, multi-hour sets to boot.

I just bought my Lollapalooza ticket as well. I went last year and loved the downtown Chicago location. I just wish I would have been paying attention and gotten my ticket when they were $40 (or however much it was). Damn me for not checking my email for the link to it and the reminder!
Should be grids on the official site some time today.
I still haven't bought a three day pass, but depending on the one day pricing it looks like I might have to. Manu Chao on Saturday, Wilco on Sunday.
I was planning on skipping Friday because I need to work, but I could get there at 4:30 for some Ryan Adams, Umphrey's, Iron & Wine, Raconteurs and Ween, so it looks like it will still be worth my while.
Just found this thread on here. Excited for Lolla!
I have a minimal amount of conflicts. Sonic Youth vs. Gnarls Barkley is the only one I'm antagonizing over, but I'll probably go with Gnarls because I caught SY at 'Roo.

I can no longer attend this year's lollapalooza so for those of you thinking of buying a 3 day pass, I have one available at face value ($130 when I bought it) plus shipping. Let me know.
It still looks like they just jumbled as many artists as they could into one gianormus lineup. Not that I wouldn't go if I didn't live in Chicago, but I just don't get it. If I lived in Chicago, I'd say my $$ for Pitchfork.
Too many festivals, not enough vacation time!! I definitely have to save my days next year for Wakarusa, Bonnaroo, All Good, Lollapalooza... Whoever's going to Lolla, have fun for me!

I went to Lollapalooza last year and besides Bonnaroo, it may be the best major festival I have been to (including ACL, Coachella, Voodoo and Sasquatch).
The Lolla pros: Awesome lineup - of course that's debatable. Great location - probably the best part of the festival is that it is in Chicago so even when the music ends (early when compared to Bonnaroo), there are still many many opportunities for fun, parties and more music... and of course Chicago is a great place to be a tourist and see the sights any time. Great management - of the festivals I have been to (big and small), bands seemed to go on more consistently on-time at Lollapalooza and once the temperature topped out over 90 degrees last year, finding free bottled water from security guards/safety personnel and stage hands was definitely a plus. With the relatively small venue, the management did great job of scheduling the acts on the appropriate stages so that there was not any noticible noise bleed from one performance disrupting another.
Cons: Curfews - while its not really a big deal since there is a lot to do in Chicago after 10:00 p.m., after going to Bonnaroo, you begin to get a little spoiled with live music lasting until sunrise! Lack of community - Because there is no camping on site at Lollapalooza, you lose out on what I think is the best part of Bonnaroo... no meeting your neighbors, no hanging out at your campsite doing things that will go un-mentioned here on the board or just people watching in general. COST - IMO, this is the biggest downfall of Lollapalooza; if you do not live within commuting distance or have a free or cheap place to stay for Lollapalooza, lodging in Chicago can be very costly, especially if you want to be downtown close to the action and somewhere clean - you can expect to pay more than $200 a night. Of course, you can stay a bit further out ner the airports and make use of Chicago's awesome public transportation system and take the trains to downtown.
Hopefully this cn help you make up your mind one way or another about going to Lollapalooza.

This year though there are some late night shows happening around chicago. I wont be at the fest but I will definitely be at the after party shows. On the sat the 5 Blues Traveler and Particle will be performing at the House of Blues. The same night at the Vic Theatre members of Umphrey's McGee and the Disco Biscuits are performing as the Brain Damaged Eggmen(i'll be at this one for sure, already got my tickets) and on the 6 the Duo,Scott Metzger from Particle and the Bassist from Ween will be performing at the Abbey Pub as Bustle For Your Hedgerow a Led Zeppelin tribute band. So there will definitely be music going on after the fest. [
