Holy batshit, that lineup has to be the greatest lineup I've ever seen. Fucking GNARLS. And WOLF PARADE. And... and... oh shit, I just had an overgasm. I want to go.
Gnarls Barkley and String Cheese! Nice!! I've been to the last three ACLs and I thought last years was pretty bad -- not a Coldplay fan. Although Dirty Dozen Brass Band tore it up in the gospel tent. ACL is notorious for its sit-ins, so hopefully Damien Marley will collaborate with Ben Harper, etc. Great line-up!
^^^I agree about last year's lineup. Kept me from going. A let down especially after the way they loaded up the year before...
Okay, so for those who haven't been to ACL and are interested here's the 411. The great thing about ACL is obviously the music and the lineup. This year, they may not have any HUGE acts, but they have a lot of mid major acts, an interesting mix of new and old stuff. They're also, more than any other festival, largely reliant this year on area acts. For someone who lives in Austin, this is good and bad. Good because it gives our local bands larger exposure in a hometown setting. Bad because I can see most of the local acts at least 5 times a year in better, more intimate settings. Moving on.
The biggest problem with ACL is the setting. Zilker Park is basically a giant field surrounded by trees...SURROUNDED by trees. When the sun gets in gear, it can be unrelenting on you. There's only one tent venue (the gospel tent). On top of that, the festival offers little outside of the music, only refreshments and a small arts and crafts village in the center of the park. Unlike other festivals, ACL doesn't really try too hard to set up a festival culture of any kind which is probably the biggest problem I have with the festival.
^^^To be honest, if I weren't hitting up Bonnaroo, I'd probably be pissed with the lineup. Not that it's anywhere near as bad as last year's lineup (Oasis+Coldplay+2 nights of Widespread=bored Harry). But as a sort of compliment to Bonnaroo, I cannot complain. I still wish there was a Manu Chao type headliner, but I can dig on Willie, Van and Petty (x2).

I wish I would have postponed my trip to austin by one week. I didnt have the lineup and my mother (yes I am going on vaca with my mom) wanted to get plane tickets. She actaully wanted to go to the fest for a bit if I wanted to. Damn. Im retarded. Hopefully some of these bands will come a week early to do some shows. I always cathc a few good shows when I am down there.
Heres to hoping secret machines finally get a webcast at the blue room.

My hubby and I want to go to this really bad but we figure it will cost us about 4 grand, YIKES...We have talked about saving up and hitting Vegoose if it has a good line-up. We can go to Vegas pretty cheap because we go out there all the time and they give us alot of perks...Does anyone know if they plan on doing it again this year? Did anyone go last year? We are just trying to figure out if we can fit another festival in our schedule and budget this year, Thanks for any info

Yeah, we had a big group that went last year and had an amazing time, and we'll be there again this year. Nothing like hitting up a big vegas buffet to carb up for a long night at the festival. But this year we're definitely going to do some sort of group costume, there were some funny ones last year. even the bands were in costume! Beck & Co were a boy scout troop, the Shins were Nuns, and the flaming lips were in furry animal costumes..... oh wait, the lips are ALWAYS in furry animal costumes....

The lineup is good. But there are a few problems.
For starters, I live in Austin, so a good portion of the bill this year are area acts. Which is great for them. It provides them with much needed exposure. But for Austinites, it means a fourth to a third of the bill is filled with acts we can see 4-5 times a year in a much more intimate setting.
Second, the headliners. I love Willie, Van and Tom, but I'm already seeing Tom at Roo, Willie already plays several shows in the area, and from what I've heard, Van isn't nearly what he was back in the day live. On top of that, the last three years there have been substantial rumors to bring major headliners to ACL that have fallen through. Two years ago, it was Manu Chao. Last year, it was Stevie Wonder and this year, Prince. Now, it's pretty normal for festivals to have rumors floating around about artists that never show up, but Charles Attal uses those rumors to pre sell a majority of the tickets which inevitably ends in a bunch of pissed off people who thought that Radiohead, Prince or U2 were going to headline and instead get people their parents listen to. My frustration with the headliners stems more from the method that the guys who run the fest use outrageous rumors to sell tickets before the lineup's released.
Finally, I feel like the festival doesn't do much to stretch itself on a year to year basis. It's pretty bare bones as far as non music activities, and they pretty much have fallen into the rut of getting the groups that come through Austin all the time already. The only act that was mildly surprising as an addition to the fest was Massive Attack.
Don't get me wrong. I'm going. It's a great lineup. But there are a lot of music fans in Austin pissed off about how the festival conducts itself these days. And the reasons have a lot to do with what's promised and what's actually delivered.
