I propose that every employer offer one Ferris Bueller Day a year for full time employees. A Ferris Bueller Day would be like a sick day except the employee doesn't have to pretend to be sick and is exempt from any reprecussions that come as a result of him/her calling out. Of course, the not pretending to be sick thing is contrary to the character of the day, but so what. Maybe you can badly pretend to be sick. Maybe the code would be a "cough, cough" to conclude your call.
The only requirement is that the employee must do something somewhat Ferris-like: catch a ballgame, join a parade, steal your best friend's dad's car (an FBD would not exempt the employee from local laws, however), etc.
Proof of the Ferris-Worthy activity would have to be turned in like a doctor's note when the employee returns to work.
Today I took an unofficial FBD to watch the Mets at Braves spring training game at Walt Disney World. I texted a couple people at work to taunt them and was shocked to receive a reply that one of the was on the way to the same game. When I saw him coming down my row I was shocked to see my boss right behind them. They got passes into the game and were taking two hour lunch breaks to take in a few innings.
When I was in sixth grade, if we got straight As, we got to take a free day off. Only, we didn't have to do a Ferris thing, we had to do an "educational" thing. So one time, I went to the art museum; and one time, I went to see Mel Gibson's version of Hamlet.
Okay, so that was barely on topic AND I'm a nerd!!!!
I took lots of "free" days off in school. I took a day off work today...but I don't think I'm ever going back...Monday will be a day to go fill out some applications.
