the show I'm going to see tonight is a prime example of why ticketmaster sucks so hard... Sound Tribe Sector 9 at the house of blues. Ticket face value is $18. You can get tickets at the HOB box office ($20 total) OR through ticketmaster ($31.50 total) $2 is for the facility fee. The remaining $11.50 is for ticketmaster's "convenience" and "processing" fees.
this topic was brought up in a pearl jam thread, but i think it deserves it's own thread.
I am one of those people who hates ticketmaster so much, I'll drive 50 miles out of my way to a venue's box office just to avoid ticketmaster. I don't care if i spend more on gas and wasted time than i would have to just buy from TM. For me it's the principle. Unfortunately, that's not even an option much these days, as ticketmaster tries to force facilities they have under contract to not sell from their box office so that going thru TM is the only choice. They are a ruthless monopoly. $11.50 for "convenience" on an $18 ticket.................
I've been ranting against them for 15 years it seems.... I'll keep ranting.... I hate ticketmaster with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns

Yeah ticketmaster is pretty much a monopoly, they charge what they want simply cuz they can... I hate ticketmaster myself and avoid it at all costs, my hats off to you for driving rather than giving those bastards your money... Sometimes there isnt much choice though, the show must go on....
one of the great things about austin is that i haven't bought through ticketmaster in the two years i've lived here...[
Yeah, I know what you mean. However, Front Gate Tickets is sometimes as bad with their own "processing fees" but no where near what Ticketmaster is like. I try to see bands in Austin as much as possible, but sometimes I have to go to Dallas or Houston and Ticketmaster is always the company I have to deal with. I dont understand why people in Dallas and Houston feel so apathetic towards this huge problem. It is amazing the difference in seeing a band in Austin then seeing them in Dallas or Houston. I attempt to avoid it if at all possible.

Being underage, ticketmaster is the only way I can actually get tickets to things since: a) My parents forbid me to go to shows (so I can't use their cards) b) My friends won't buy my tickets because they're too poor themselves (though I'm good for it) c) I'm underage and can't get my OWN credit card to buy tickets online d) Driving all the way out to a venue for the ticket would cost me in gas what ticketmaster's "processing" fees would cost
Ticketmaster lives right down the street, I go, pay in cash, and do a little record shopping while I'm there (it's in the local Record & Tape Trader). It's not so bad. It's worth it for the bands I wanna see, plus avoiding all that "gotta ask a person with a credit card" crap.

I understand that they need to charge a fee to absorb some of the cost of doing business but what gets me is the ticket master booths are run by people working at other strores. Ticketmaster doesnt need to pay nayone for that job. They need to run there servers and pay the people how run those, a few busniess people and a host of other things.
Just think about how many ticketmaster events are going on in your city alone today. Think about a low $5 chrage on each ticket. Now think about the 100,000 they made just today in your city. This company must make a huge profit. I hate buying a 10 dollar ticket that has a $5 fee on it, 50% of the ticket price? Thats retarded.

evil evil scalpers. I recall attempting to get a close white stripes seat for the last tour. I had the tickets within the first min they went on sale and I was row U. Funny how all the good seats were on eBay. I really wish ticket scalping was a federal offense and 100% illegal.
