Just another day to get drunk. Why do Americans need an exuse to get fuddup...shit you don't need to run around "celebrating" Cinco de Mayo to do that.
I'm sure most people don't even know what the hell it is. Mexico's independence day? No its not. Even if it was.....what is the reasoning for celebrating something like that? Mexicans don't parade around partying for 4th of July. It just makes little sense to me.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 battle in Puebla, Mexico between the Mexican and the French that eventually led to their independence. America wasn't even there until after the worst was over and then we marched with them in their parade. Woohoo. Cinco de Mayo wasn't even brought to the U.S until the 1920's and wasn't even of importance until the 1960's to generate ethnic pride.
It turns out that the holiday is actually more celebrated in America. Weird. "A gringo holiday made to sell Mexican beer to Americans."
Okay I'm done. Now somebody give me a damn Corona . Peace
Actually, Cinco De Mayo is akin to the Mexican fourth of July and it's more of a Mexican holiday down here in Texas than it is a gringo holiday. Just fyi.

Mexico's independence day is something like Sept. 15 or 16. May 5th is just a milestone on their way to independence. Cinco de mayo is not a "mexican fourth of July".
" it's more of a mexican holiday down here in Texas" well good! it should be....that was the whole point of my post.

Independence day is on the 16th. And you're right, we don't ever celebrate cinco de mayo. I didn't even remember it was the fifth until I saw this post.

Dude i work 7 nights a week with two doubles at a Mexican resturant(waiter/manager), and i completely agree... I live in f*cking MAINE, people decide to celebrate Cino De Mayo in MAINE!!! We were swamped for a good 7 hours straight, absolute madness the kicker was that it had to fall on a Friday this year.... We had obnoxious amounts of large parties(6+) and getting a service drink from the bar was like pulling teeth, i made my cash but im glad its over... It is silly how much america will capitalize on pretty much ANYTHING they can, last year cinco was on a wednesday and it was still packed.... St patties is another great example of something that we dont care about but make money off of.... I myself would rather work a normally busy friday night for a little less money that deal with cinco madness on a friday just to make a little more....
Easter and Halloween always pissed me off for the same reasons you mention...
I meant Mexican-Americans. And like I said, I work in a highly Latino part of town that was decked out today. Didn't see anything in the gringo side that was any different. But then I live in Austin. Everyday's a Corona themed party here...

Yeah where i work is definately not authentic mexican... You can get good stuff around here tho at smaller hole in the wall sort of places with Mexican peeps actually coming up with the recipes and cooking, rather than a bunch of white dudes deciding to make tons of cash off of rice, beans and cheap s*itty house tequilla.... Our margaritas are way better than any of the other mex places around here though... Food is good but not so authentic, our Guacamole KICKS ASS and you can NEVER go wrong with the fajitas where i work, everything else is kinda so-so...
I got a few beers for free when i left work,(left over promotion crap) and they're WAY better than Corona... Im drinking a Tecate right now and its nice...
I went to college in san diego, so i spent a good chunk of my first couple of years in mexico, and even in the americanized tijuana only the gringos did much. The biggest party day for the true natives that i saw is dia de los muertos, that is around halloween.

Ah yes...Tecate...it and lone star are the party beers of choice down here...
I love Lone Star, that what I drink when I go to Austin, I feel like a hard core tourist but who cares. You can only get it at like 2 places in my town.
No theres some tasty mexican food down there. Taco night is happening tonight my friends.
As for the biggest party, I'd say the puente Guadalupe-Reyes. It starts on December 12 with the Dia de Guadalupe and ends on January 6 with Dia de los Reyes, and since Christmas and New Year happen in the middle... Well, you can imagine. But it's ugly stuff, I think it's the highest concentration fo deaths in the year.

Yeah, I know a lot of people who end up leaving Austin after a visit with a case of Lone Star or Shiner Bock. Great hot weather beers.
