Ok, the mods have put their heads together and put this system together(I hope we don't have to use it)
The offender at hand will get a 25% warning
After 4 warnings(100%) there will be a verbal warning sent to the individual(s) and knocked back down to 75% If the problem continures that member's account will be suspended and the powers that be will have the final say of that happens.
For the most part things have been good around here and speaking for all the mods, we hope that you will do your job and respect others opinions and feelings. A good vibe is a happy Inforoo for everyone ;D
But it begs the question, how does one get down off the red tree once someone puts you on it? A day? Two days? A week? As someone who got a verbal AND a warning level, I'm just a tad bit curious.
Okay- seriously--- why the heck does my Karma keep tanking?
I've been more than benign the last week, especially with my warning level as such a crappy badge. I really don't care where my Karma goes when it's at zero, but the fact that friends on this board keep having to hit me up to keep me around -2 means there is someone who actually spends their days hitting my karma, which is pathetic.
Anyway. Just wanted to vent.
Update note: It's back up again-- and I swear I'm not pining for everyone to lift me up, it's just a curiosity on being taken down. I'm fine with my self-worth, I promise.

I've exalted you at least seven or eight times within the week and you continued to get butchered; and you haven't said anything close to controversial in the past week. The system is being absued.

I exalted you this morning around 8 am and when I came back to this thread about an hour later someone smited you twice. You went from 0 to -2 in an hour and a half. You weren't even online to say anything. I exalted you again but I don't know what is up with that. I don't even know you but to smite someone just for spite is pretty sad.
I don't want to see anyone with negative karma but especially for no reason it seems-Is there any way the mods can check to see who is smiting you?
I realize this just means the karma system is pretty pointless at worst, but at best maybe it shows that there are people who would bother to make someone look bad if they can. Without the karma system they would actually have to speak aloud.

People could be reading past threads where something was posted and smiting based on that (meaning nothing new/current needs to be posted). Threads may drop down, but they're always there for searches and new folks trying to catch up. Didn't weSkew get a warning for something a while back? It could be for those posts. Just guessing here, I don't know the ins and outs of the system either.
Yes I've been blessed with a warning. It's great to see that the misunderstanding lasts well after the mark is gone.
But I think we've already shown that my karma went down when only one person was online this morning around 5am, not from dozens of new people pouring over old posts.
Anyway. It's being abused, I and plenty of others have now pointed it out. It goes down whether I talk about it or not. I get private messages from people asking me why it goes down. Until a Mod bothers to actually note how it's one particular IP address or two, it will continue to happen, I'm sure. It just sucks, and it's a slight vibe killer.
OK, first of all, I'm moving this to Off-Topic because this conversation has nothing to do with Bonnaroo at this point.
As far as the Karma system goes, it is a silly, stupid thing. It is not to be taken seriously. I just went in and knocked 20 points off my own karma to put my money where my mouth is.
If I remember correctly, it was a feature that proboards arbitrarily added to Inforoo. Adam didn't ask for it, but there was no clear way to disable it and everyone seemed to think it was kind of fun and generallly harmless. Personally I've never "smote" anyone but I have found it kind of fun to exalt people if they offer something particularly helpful. If people start taking it seriously (which is ridiculous; I mean this is a "cool points" system, people), I guess it might be worth looking further into what needs to be done to just remove it.
Noone is going to research IP addresses to find out who is smiting you, if that is even possible. Hopefully its been made clear that this board isn't a place for people to bicker back and forth at each other, and frankly I'd much rather have someone abuse the smite than post things to the board that are confrontational [EDIT: for clarification, I'm referring to the "smite abuser", not anyone else with the "confrontational" comment].

A person doesn't have to post to exalt/smite someone. The two don't necessarily correlate. Lots of people just seem to lurk and never post. But I agree with you in principle, you do appear to be targeted for smiting.

I disagree. Although it is not terribly important and is clearly a superficial and easily manipulated number, it still holds a reflection on the person whom it is attached to. It certainly is not the best measure to decide the value of people's comments, but it is some indicator. A newcomer to the board sees negative karma and might assume the person stupid, inconsiderate, unpopular . . . whatever you connotate with poor karma. We probably shouldn't do it, but you see someone with a lot of positive karma and you think "Wow, they must be knowledgeable/helpful", you see someone with negative karma and you think "stupid jackass". Should people be hung up on their outward appearance on an internet message board? Probably not, but certainly one has the right not to be unjustly harassed through it.
While this is not a great method, it is the method we have nonetheless and should not stand prone to abuse. Some people may find it silly, but clearly there are those that find it to be a great means of exacting revenge, thus meaning the system must have some value/credence.
On that note, does anyone know how my karma got this high? I didn't do it myself, and its starting to make me believe I have a secret admirer. You can come out and admit it, its OK . . .
If a newcomer visits Inforoo and sees that someone has a negative score in something called "Karma" it is in someway a perception issue, even if those of us who have heard you explain it away know it doesn't really mean anything. And this brings up the better question: why would anyone take the warning system seriously then?
And Kai Mai, I really appreciate your comments. We've already been told that the new rules mean we will get warnings before we are even spoken to by moderators. It's not about what karma means to the moderators, it's what it means to the hundreds of people that could frequent this board.
I wish people wouldn't abuse it so it could remain a silly, stupid thing. And I'm sure that people are frustrated with me even bringing it up now, which is exactly what the smiter in this situation wants-- to paint me as a whiner. I kept relatively quiet for two weeks now while my karma has been ritualistically hit. But the part of me that is a moderator for other boards just wants this to be a fun experience for anyone and have no abuse or vibe-kill. And I'm not alone.
Anyway, sorry for complaining at all. I really didn't mean to piss in anyone's cornflakes, I just noticed there was pee in mine.
i think newcomers would be much more turned off by the people whining about karma. it just seems so childish to be upset or investigating an imaginary sense of selfworth. people are going to form an opinion based on posts not on karma. my karma has gone all over the map and i havent said a word about the rampant karma abuse.
and some inforooers should quit accusing me on the sly. ive asked some of you several times to not make postings about me an yet some continue to do so with silly little parnoid accusations. ive said i dont play that silly karma game. i never have in the past and i dont now. i havent said a thing negative to or about anyone inn a long time. whatever image is painted for an inforooer is one that they painted for themselves . i think that people are just tired of hearing complaints about the karma system and random accusations as to why someone thinks their karma is tanking as well as complaining about the warning system and the mods. especially when it is obvious to everyone why that system was put into use. maybe thats why some peoples karma is not so hot. i cant figure out why they would care to begin with.

Paranoia would be assuming everyone's talking about you. And imaginary self worth would be telling people when, where and what they can post (unless you're a mod).
I am assuming that an Inforooer is well within their rights to posit why their karma is doing funny things; and others are within their rights to post about what they have also seen.
paranoid would be accusing someone of something they havent done just because you think they are out to get you. if you accuse me of doing something i have not done i will let you know. which i did. im not intimidating anyone, just trying to keep my name (or the direct and obvious referencing to me)out of all of your nonsense. hopefully the mods will warn you again about talking about me and accusing of things. if you would just act reasonable and not make off topic and and incorrect accusations because your childish paranoid assumptions i thin inforoo would be a much more enjoyable place for everyone

You haven't done a very good job of keeping your name out of this.
And if you've been reading, you'll see that this was an on-topic conversation about 'playing nice" between many Roo'ers who made me feel much better that this wasn't paranoia; This was someone abusing the system. I'm sorry you don't see it that way and I hope that those that want to keep discussing this feel they still can in this thread.
my karma has gone from - 28 to + 30 and back to negatives again in a day. i htink everyone is aware of karma misuse. however i think your bad karma is coming from your negative whining and the only reason that its not lower is because you have you circle of friends to manipulate the system with positives for you. which they admitedly did after you complained about how bad you felt about your karma.
i dont thin the topic was lets accuse me of causing your bad karma when youve done nothing but whine and complain for 3 days. what is so hard about not talking about me. hopefully the mods will see that once again you cant seem to stop with the childish slanders about me and put you back on warning. i let you have your way for a couple of days thinking that someone would say somehting to you. but as you just continue i feel i should speak up. just let it go man. quit talking about me. grow up.

i did not reference you. i accidentaly responded to what you had said without knowing it was even your post. my post was not negative and was on topic and never referenced you in anyway. you then took it to the childish zone by saying i wasnt allowed to post when you did. grow up. im gonna let this alone again for a while. i dont see how continuing any further trying to reason with you will help at all. ill give it a while for the mods to deal with it and if you continue with this then i will defend my self from your accusations once again. seems like it would just be easier for you not to talk about me though
