Well after failing miserably againa(basically due to the fact that I NEVER attend class) I've decided this college thing is not for me. My dream for years has to been to open my own resturant. I plan on getting a job in the field and devoting my time to writing a flawless business plan. I need some encouragement!! Feel free to leave comments, advice, support. Thanks guys!!
Well it I have a few different ideas but I'm gearing toward good old American comfort food but with a little gourmet twist. I plan on it being really tavern oriented hopefully not only have good food but a nice bar scene.
Only problem now is notifying the Mom about my decision. I hope she understands though...its not like I can NEVER go back, but hopefully I won't need to
May take her a minute to let it sink in, but most parents are understanding. you will have to give a her a free meal though when the business gets up and running.
Good luck! If you haven't already, I highly recommend reading "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain. Terrific (and wickedly, brutally funny) look at the restaurant biz.
There are lots of worse things than leaving school. If it's not working for you, it can be a massive waste of money. After high school, I went for a semester, decided it wasn't right, and took a year and a half off. It was probably one of the smartest things I've ever done. (I did go back, but I planned on it from the time I left.)

Thats exactly why im not really planning on going to college right now is because i cant say for sure that i would stick with it and i dont think i'd want to get into pretty substantial debt for something that i probably wouldnt even take seriously... and i have ZERO help from my parents, i have more money than they do for the most part...
Im a waiter/part time manager where i work and i LOVE the resturant business... Its sounds sadistic but i really enjoy it... I think about owning a place someday once in awhile but for now im gunna build my management credentials by experience and not get in over my head... If someone else's business goes under im out a temporary job, if MY business goes under im pretty f*cked.... So for now i'll bust ass for other people, so long as it gets me what i need with a little extra and is recognized and appreciated... My boss loves me and is helping me get 3 weeks off this summer so i must be doing ok

That's the way to do it in the resturant busines.. work your way up and learn all you can..
I have a 32 year old buddy who just recently opened his own pizza place and is doing phenomenal mainly because he's worked in the pizza business since he was 16. he hasn't had any formal classes on managment or business, he just knows all of it from experience, which is far better than textbook learning anyday.

next semester is my last semester, good luck on the resteraunt thing! i'll be saving up for a boat i want to fish, preferably off the coast of cape cop. in a year or two i plan on going up their trying to find a job on a boat and learnign the trade
I'm currently going on my third year of taking time off from schooling. I've taken some classes in the meantime and will probably go back to college if things don't work out this year.
Don't feel to bad. I took time off to write screenplays, short stories and poetry. At least you're thinking practically. I don't even get paid for doing what I took time off to do.
My guess is your parents will be supportive if you've tried and failed. Maybe it's just not your time right now. Either way, it's better not to waste the money now, and see if you can make any headway in the restaurant business. I wish you the best of luck.
I sort of had a "lost year" during my first year away at school. My dad has always referred to it as the $20,000 vacation. Whoops! Anyway, while I really do wish I had that piece of paper (it just makes things easier sometimes), I don't regret a motherfu*king thing.
very admirable. i just graduated from college, and one of my most persistent thoughts during the last month or so was "i shouldn't be here" - college is so drilled into people's heads as the next obligatory step after high school that we don't even think about alternatives. i would have been better off if i'd waited a couple years to go, or not worried about doing it for a consecutive four years. i could have been using this time to get practical experience towards what i really want to do, instead of just retarding progress towards that goal.
anyway, best of luck. it's cool that you're doing what it is you want to be doing; that you know about the alternatives and you've made the best choice for yourself.
