Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I live in Detroit and work in the automotive industry. Needless to say times have been pretty tough for the Big 3 and the suppliers lately. Anyway, I just got called into a meeting and asked to LEAVE THE OFFICE because there is about to be a mass layoff and there are "security concerns"...
WTF? I work at HQ for a VERY large tier one supplier and when we get rid of people we now have "security concerns"? Has it really gotten that tough on careers in Michigan? Christ.
I feel bad for a lot of these guys. Losing a job is one thing but the "hi... pack your shit because you are done" assassinations are riduculous. If they were blue collar union, they would get a huge check to leave and benefits forever, but the white collar guys... too bad so sad.
What a buzz kill. I am going to return from Bonnaroo to twice the workload for sure.
I hope no one goes postal.
Tip one back for the American worker this weekend. We truly are an endangered species.

I love when people get let go at GM. I work a lot in the 600 Tower of the Renaissance Center and it makes finding a parking space so much easier.
But seriously, I have some good friends at Delphi (both of them with new families) and everytime there is more bad news about that place, I always worry for them. I think its finally beginning to happen that those higher-ups in the automotive industry are starting to realize that their business plans need to evolve (sure its about 20 years too late, but its a start) its just unfortunate that many of those who provide the manual labor in the industry haven't evolved as well.

I'd ask you what the h'ell you mean by that but you obviously have no idea, or you couldn't have made the comment to begin with.

What I mean about which part?
Ford and GM have slowly started to downsize. IMO, they seem like (maybe) they now realize that you cannot continually employ muiltitudes of people just so that you basically employ your own customer base. Yes, I understand that it is difficult for these corporations to get rid of union workers and to continue paying the enormous legacy costs that they have incurred. But they are taking baby steps in the correct direction by spinning off their suppliers (e.g. Delphi and Visteon) and the recent sale of GMAC by GM.
The next step is for them to start actually producing cars that aren't so generic and never change body styles over 10 years. Sure, things may become reliable but they also become boring; there is nothing wrong with keeping the same nameplate on a vehicle, but after a while, people are going to begin to want variety.
If you are referring to me not knowing what I am talking about regarding those providing the manual labor not evolving.... The sense of entitlement that a lot of those in the UAW display is a detriment to their cause. Union leaders routinely fight the corporations tooth and nail over concessions that they inevitably loose once the case goes to arbitration (or worse, to court). In the long run, these drawn out labor battles do nothing but hurt the union member. Yes, the unions have done good in the past, but there came a point many moons back where they became a hinderance to the advancement of their members.
There are large segments of the manual labor force who are currently employed who have had every opportunity during their past years of employment to further their education or do something to advance their career. It will be nobody's fault but their own when they are laid off or let go and have gained no marketable skills over the past 20 years except for putting headlights into the grill of a Buick.
i agree unions are outdated. im from michigan and have friends/family working in the auto industry. unions have killed american industry. it is crazy that with benefits factory workers make 35 -55 dollars an hour. for doing an 8 dollar an hour job. ya it was nice while it lasted. but keep the unions and soon everyone will lose their jobs. mexicans are happy to work for 1/10th that much and they dont have all the hassles of unions and environmental regs.
OK, I have deep feelings about many of our "union shops"... See, when a line goes down and we are in deep sheot I am the one who goes to fix it... PLCs, Material Handling software, front end, back end servers... you get the point.
These guys can be a real pain in the rear.
Say I need a screwdriver to bring the entire plant back on line... think I can just walk up to a tool box and get one? NO... THOSE ARE UNION TOOLS I AM GOING TO FILE A GREIVANCE.
Think I can run a new cable to bring the plant back up? NO. Wait for a union electrician three hours later and show him how to do it or I AM GOING TO FILE A GREIVANE.
I need help forcing a 2,000 lb. robot into position because it is throwing seat frames across the enclosure (hilarious to see)... think I can just ask the 200 guys standing around to help me?? NO. NOT MY JOB I AM GOING TO FILE A GREIVANE.
But, at least if I need some smoke I can just walk out to the designated smoking area and get whatever I want.
None of this would bother me if:
a.) they didn't make more than me to stretch leather over a seat. b.) they didn't have better benefits than me to torque four bolts every minute. c.) nevermind...
