Just saw it, finally... And I typed an extensive email to a friend and thought I would share:
*EDIT: SPOILER ALERT - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED (albeit late, sorry I forgot to put this up at first)*
Actually, it was better than I thought. Better than X2 at least. Some nice classic lines/moments thrown in.
And for all the craziness of comparing it to the comic, it really played like the X comics do (i.e. their continuity is all fucked up too).
Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man -- a bit part, but actually the guy looked like the comic, had the same attitude and the same shirt, so I can give them credit. He's one of my favorites in the X-universe, so I like seeing him included
Juggernaut - hehe, pretty good considering.
Beast - better by the end, but in the beginning he just looked so fake and sounded like Fraiser enough that I was distracted.
Wolverine & Kitty: Spot-on from the comic. Kitty Pryde probably came out the best in spirit.
Colossus (Peter): Anyone remember who this guy is? Anything about him? Boy did they drop the ball on him. Yes, he's strong, we get it. Could have used some justification (yes, comic readers know why he is there).
Iceman: Better. But the comic one is a jokester, like an adult kid. This version is like the polar (hah) opposite.
Rogue: I'm so over her movie version. Nobody cares.
Angel: Eh, sure.
Cyclops; I like tortured Scott, more late-X-universe like. But he's supposedly dead, which is weird since in the comic Jean and Prof X and Magneto sorta die all the time, Cyclops never. Kinda cool they bothered.
Jean Grey / Phoenix: Probably more logical than the comic version, which was like this big cosmic God thing. I still don't get why they just didn't put Artie/Leech near her.
Artie/Leech: In the comics he does the same thing to people's powers, but he looks like a bug-eyed soccerball head, which makes him funny.
Magneto: Pretty dead on. A much better example of how he thinks and how it's fucked up and yet logical.
Callisto, Arclight (the two Magneto gals): Very cool. Callisto shouldn't be able to move so fast, but these two were spot-on representations of the Morlocks, who were essentially mutants who lived underground. I liked the little mutant Bonnaroo they had going in the woods. *EDIT: Yes, I know Arclight was a Marauder who actually hunted Morlocks, but her amalgamated ideals still make her a good choice*
The whole "cure" plot: Wow, they certainly have trust in our government at the end, don't they? The FDA would have rolled over even faster with Allegra Cure pills sold at CVS.
Nightcrawler: Um, where? I know Alan didn't re-up for the movie, but it might be helpful to explain why a team member is suddenly gone.
In general... Again, not bad. Better than I expected. For $6 I got two hours. Most X-comics are $3-5 so its a great deal to see some of this stuff in action. There will be an X-4 I'm sure... But before then they are doing Wolverine and Magneto prequels, which should be cool. Wolvie and Kitty go to Japan in one classic old X-story, so that would be neat.
WARNING!!!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!! DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!
character development was all over the place in this one, IMO.
Some characters got alot more depth (Magneto, Prof. X, Scott, Jean, Wolverine, Storm), while other got almost none at all (Beast, Kitty, Iceman, Rogue, Mystique, Colossus, Angel)
I was expecting alot more Angel, but the scenes with him were good, I guess
I could not stand Kitty.. her role seemd absolutly pointless to me.. just a wrench to throw into the Rogue/Iceman relationship, if you ask me.
Colossus was another pointless one to me... just there to fill out the "muscle" of the group..no real depth at all..
What was great to me about this one was the character development on Prof. X and Magneto. You really get a feel for Magneto's racism in this one, sure it's apparent in the last two that he's not a fan of homo sapiens, but this one I think really delved into his true reasons for loathing the human race..and at the same time, you could see yourself agreeing with him if you were a mutant.. Prof. X's conflicts in this one made the character, IMO.. should he be restraining Jean, or should he be letting her go? what is ethical, and what isn't? very good stuff indeed.
Beast was... sadly, a waste, if you ask me.. they could have done soooo much more with him, but Kelsey Grammer did the best job he could do with such little character development.
Rogue, meh.. I stopped really giving a crap about her halfway through the movie.. it seemed like a big cop out at the end, a mushy ending to the love story..
Iceman. well, I'm glad they decided to finally "ice-up" the guy.. I was waiting for his true ice form to come out.. other than that, he wasn't very gripping as a character to me.
Wolverine was, as always, a badass. Hugh Jackman gets better each time he plays the role. I liked that Logan is now basically Scott's replacement, and Storm, Prof. X's.. definatly not how I saw that ending up, but was suprisingly pleased witht the results.. Another thing I liked about Wolverine this time around was that he was a bit more humanized, a bit more subdued.
Storm.. I actually liked Storm alot in this one.. I hated her in the last two... she was basically this fluff character who was always in the background, but really came into her own this time around. loved that she had a much bigger and more expansive role in this one.
Jean/ Phoenix was pretty much how I expected her to be.. but damn, she was hot... even when she was all green and vieny, she was still hot I loved the little kid "I want it NOW" type mentality.
Even though Scott had virtually no role in this film, I thought what they did with him was amazing... in the other two, he's the leader. the strong guy who always has it together and in this one he's the complete opposite. I liked that he died, too.. pretty unexpected to me.
The villians (other than Magneto and Jean) were, at best fluff characters.. they could have done way more with the Morlocks... I totally wanted more of Multiple Man, but was pleased with how well they got that character down.. one of the most accurate actor/character match-ups.. I just wish he'd been around a little more.. Juggernaut was... well, Juggernaut.. just a vehicle for one-liners.
all in all, I felt it was good, and had a great story line to it, just not enough character development on some ends.
did you catch the bit at the very end of the credits?
again **DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS!!!!**
you remember that brain dead guy in the Moira McTaggert video? Remember what Prof. X said?
Guess who decided to transfer his consciousness into the guy? ;D
Basically, it's a 30 second scene with Moira coming into the guy's hospital room and saying "Hello..." in an " I know you're not going to talk back, but I'll say it anyway" type of tone.. then the guy turns his head a little and says "Hello, Moira." to which she replys. "....Charles.." cut to black.
great little treat for those that like to watch all the credits.
I saw this over the weekend, and it gets two big, fat thumbs down (with a rasberry thrown in for good measure) from me.
As I said in the earlier thread, I'm a huge X-Men fan and I the first two movies were some of the best action movies of the last ten years or so in my book. I was hearing a lot of bad buzz about this one, but it seemed like the general reception was that it was decent, but strayed really far from the mythology established in the comic books. Personally I thought it was a piece of crap regardless of the fact that the characters and stories I loved from the comic were destroyed for no apparant reason. Worst part of the movie: the incredibly lame, cheesy, poorly written and acted "We've got to make a stand!" speeches. The incredibly miscast Halle Berry (AngelaBassett? Gina Torres? Please?) was mostly to blame, but everyone was involved a bit. They completely ruined one of the great comic book stories of all time (Phoenix saga). It was like a Cliff's notes version with some pages torn out and the ending changed. The final battle looked so damn cheap (after the bridge part) it was ridiculous. This was true of the first film too but they made it work by staying within their means (i.e. not trying to make it "bigger" and more epic than it was). It was basically a stupid movie which made no sense. I know its "only a comic movie" but the first two films were not treated this way at all. Something is wrong with your movie when you are 100% sad, dissappointed and pissed with the heroes when the two main villains get theirs (Magneto and Mystique). I think the "juggernaut bitch" video is absolutely, brilliantly hilarious, but the inclusion and especially delivery of that line was putrid (other than that Kitty vs. Juggernaut was one of the cooler parts of the movie). Beast and Juggernaut are two of my favorite characters and overall I have to say they looked and "felt" relatively cool. Beast came off way better than it seemed like he would from the stills, although some of the wirework at the end was atrocious. Grammer turned out to be a pretty good choice although I'd still like to see Larry Fishburne in that getup. I liked how heavy Juggernaut's footteps felt, but why did they give him Ram-Man from He-Man's helmet (should have been red, bitch, he's had that since 4th grade)? Also, there was no good reason for him to be in the movie.
Blah.
I'll let the first two live alone on my DVD shelf, I'm not buying this stinker.
EDIT: On the plus side, Magneto and Mystique were as good as ever; I liked Multiple Man (they nailed his attitude in his two scenes); the bridge thing was pretty cool if highly illogical....
but the first two films were not treated this way at all.
I dunno, I was mildly let down by the first one, but it grew on me. I really disagreed with all the major continuity changes and the fact that some things weren't even usefully changed. Then the second one came along and I felt did more harm than good as a whole... This one only felt better to me because I finally let go of worrying about the absurd continuity.
Anyway, I agree on most of your points though. Man, who could have thought the movies would make the cartoon seem like the bible?
whenver I watch a comic movie, I walk into the theater saying to myself "they're not going to live up to the comics. just remember that." and I usually have a good time watching them...
I do have to agree that the whole Mystique thing was soo angering that while others were clapping at a naked Rebecca Romjin (sp?) I was going "WHAT?!?!! How in the world does this make sense at ALL?!"
and again, Rogue losing her powers was the most stupid thing I could have ever seen.. I was totally pissed at that part where she holds Iceman's hand (she not supposed to do that!!! EVER!! That's the beauty/saddness of her character! a totally beautiful woman that can never touch anyone she loves!)
BUT, with Magneto gaining his powers back (ever so slightly) at the end, it leads me to believe that this "cure" was just sort of a mutant gene inhibitor, only effective for a short while on mutants over class 3
