I have so many friends obsessed with Myspace who keep demanding I join so they can add me as a friend. I always turn them down and they always give me looks like I'm crazy.
Apparently, the NSA is now using social networking websites such as Myspace for datamining. In addition, Myspace was recently bought by Rupert Murdoch's (FoxNews) NewCorp.
I can finally feel complete in my reasoning. Not only is it just a way to get free marketing information (and probably building of the GOP database) about you and all your friends, now it's a way for your government to spy on you. I'll pass.
If you really want to do something like Myspace, there's a lot of technology out there to let you setup your own website and interact with others. I know this could be datamined as well, but it's more difficult to mine data from many seperate sites than somewhere that thousands of people put personal information in a common format.
agreed. not to mention, it would be way to easy to mention something in passing - and then it's stuck on the net forever.
plus, you crazy kids, not only is the NSA watching, but so are your next employers. probably not a good thing if you post pics of yourself taking rips from a 4 footer.

And something that people tend to not really think about: What goes on the internet, stays on the internet. Remember in 15 years (15 years for me, maybe already for some of you) when your kids are sitting at their computer, bored, they may type your name into google to see what comes up. I dont know about you guys, but there's some pictures and information i'd rather my future kids not see.

thats exactly what i was going to say. just have to be smart about what you want to put up on it and your all good.
haha..the same thing happened to the phillies top pick Kyle Drabek(yes, doug drabek's kid)..he posted a bunch of juvinille teenager crap (you know like how he loves to get high and drink and bang chicks, etc...) and now he is catching some heat for it..i guess the lesson here is, if you plan on being in the public eye, you better regulate your myspace..luckily, i will never be famous.
I think even if you don't post stupid 4' bong rip pictures, it still scares the hell out of me. It's not just about posting illegal activities. Remember, it's a social networking site. You link up with friends and through varying degrees of seperation link up with other people, ideas, organizations, that you don't directly know. It's exactly the kind of database the NSA/CIA/FBI have been dreaming about for years.
Plus, every interest you have linked to is available for sale to marketers and political operatives.

datamining collects large chunks of information and really isnt the type of database that is used to store individually tracked peices of information. Datamining is used to collect information and forcast trends and collect large "big picture" types of information. I don't think anyone needs to worry
haha i think some people are just too paranoid. but if someone is looking in on me...i got nothing to hide.
word. i don't care if marketing companies know what i like. i'd hope it would mean that the stuff i buy at the store is more suited for my tastes. and if the government wants to know about me they can look at my arrest record, not my list of favorite bands, books, movies and friends
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
"i got nothing to hide" is the single worst excuse for being a coward I have ever heard of.
"I got nothing to hide" in my closet, but you're not taking a fukking look in it.
"I got nothing to hide" in my car officer, but you can blow me if you think you're searching it without a warrant.
Man, the complacency in people scares the piss out of me. To see some people will surrender a right WILLINGLY when the government has already taken so much away by force, it's so far beyond Orwell it's literally petrifying.
Just because you have nothing to hide in your life does not grant your fukking government the right to go through it.

/rant off
Dude you need to chill. No need for a "rant". In no way do I think it is the governments right to go through my shit. WTF!!?? In what way did I give that impression . All I said is I'm not worried about what I have on Myspace...it is a public website....they can look if they please....like I said I have nothing to hide. I'm not willingly surrenduring any of my rights...when I joined Myspace I was completley aware that anything I put on there anyone can see. Its the internet. Now as for the government listening on phones...taking away my right to decide to wear a seat belt(though I do anyway), and all the other crap they do no thats not okay.
You shouldn't surrender your rights, but you shouldn't be so paranoid either. I mean as long as you're not threatening the Prez or putting all sorts of stupid sh!t on there, than who cares. I don't put anything on there that I wouldn't tell a stranger. So if the gov't wants to look at it, feel the fuck free, I say. Now the whole NSA wire-tapping thing is a different story, because the general public can't listen to phone conversations, and the gov't shouldn't be able to either, without a warrant. Myspace is public. I mean if you follow that parnoid logic, why would you ever send an email, or talk on the phone.

im still anti-myspace, and i totally agree that if you're smart, and realize your page is open for inspection by anyone, you can have a decent page - the factor you can only half control is your friends list. you might not have bad things on your page, but your friends might...
