First, the bad news...Once again, I will be unable to attend Bonnaroo this summer.
Now, the really bad news. I found out this past Friday night that a good friend of mine was KIA in Iraq on June 6. The funeral is this Friday (the 16th) in Ohio and his mother has asked me to participate in the service. I have no doubt that had she known about my previous plans to attend Bonnaroo that she would not have asked, but I could not in good conscience refuse her (or even tell her about my plans).
The way I see it, there will be other Bonnaroos and other music festivals. I have but one opportunity to put a friend to rest. Seems we'll have to wait until next year to meet all of you fine people.
"And when he gets to Heaven, St. Peter he will tell, One more Marine reporting Sir, I've done my time in Hell."
sorry for your loss,man---that's pretty heavy----i'll have a beer and toast to him and you---and we'll see you next year---i'm sure you'll bring great comfort to his family--godspeed and peace

I am so sorry to hear about your friend. I hope everyone knows how lucky we are to be able to go to this and celebrate all the freedoms people are out there fighting for. I don't agree with this war but I think what you and your brothers are doing is a very honorable cause. May your friend rest in peace
That sucks man. I know quite a few people that have been over there, and thankfully have come back. It's just an insanely sh!tty situation all around, for those involved and their loved ones.
I admire your decision to attend the funeral, I know it was a hard one to make. I'll regret not getting a chance to enjoy Bonnaroo with you and I can guarantee that I'll toast to you and your friend on Friday.
"Chicago is known as the Windy City, and Montana is called the Big Sky State, so I think that we should somehow combine the two to create the ultimate kite-flying experience. "-Mitch Hedberg
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the good words. He was a good man, a good Marine, and a good friend.
I just found out that the Patriot Guard Riders will be in attendance as well - which means that the Westboro Church (the godhatesfags crew) will likely be there. I've been to quite a few funerals for friends killed in action, but I've yet to encounter these Westboro nutballs. I don't know how I'll react to them.

If you beat the crap out of them and get in trouble, i'll help raise money for your bail! And much condolences to you and your friend's family. You are doing a very honorable thing, and in case I haven't said this before, thank you for all the help you've given to this country by serving

Believe me, I know how you feel. I dont think I would think twice about hitting one (or more) of those a-holes straight in the nose, then knee 'em right in the jewels! I am a huge fan of Freedom of speech, and maybe they DO have the "right" to do it, but that being said, i'd still punch them

Luckily, the Patriot Guard Riders have been showing up pre-emptively at a lot of funerals and there are many more honorary members of the Patriot Guard Riders than there are members of the Westboro Church. Let's just hope the the Riders are going to this funeral as a pre-emptive action to discourage the lunatic fringe from even attending.
but if they weren there, they wouldnt be able to tell you that your friend dying in iraq is God's punishment for homosexuality.
so you should thank them for enlightening you.
Yeah, seriously. For a congregation full of inbreds, they sure are quick to pass judgement. I don't think God would approve of them railing their sisters either.
