Ok, so we're all excited about going to roo, getting all our stuff together, sleeping less and less, can't wait to go, blah blah blah. . .
when today, my boyfriend loses his job. Ugh!! He's been an electrician for 7 years, and apparently, we're learning that they don't take kindly to hippie folk! It seems that if you don't go around calling women bit.ches, men fags, or throw around racial slurs, you can't be an electrician.
The guy that fired him is a huge d*ck. Let's just call him "Jim Tobin-esque". This guy has his men working 13 hour days (down here in the Tennesse heat, mind you), doesn't let them leave the site for a break, and once told my boyfriend to go behind the bushes when "number two was knocking on the back door". Last Friday he had his men working at his own personal lakehouse - which actually sits on top of a lake. These guys were literally SWIMMING under his house for 8 hours - including my boyfriend. Trust me, it's not as fun as it might sound.
It's business politics. The guy's hired too many new people, and is now learning he can't afford to have all those guys out on the site working 13 hour days. So, instead of letting go of some of the cheaper labor he's hired in the last month, he made up some BS excuse and fired my boyfriend, who makes more than these newer guys. My boyfriend has become the scapgoat of this a$$hole's mistakes. This happened today, and it was a massive shock.
So, needless to say, this has put a damper on our parade. If he had to do it, why couldn't this guy just let him go AFTER Bonnaroo? Why do these f*%&$!g rednecks have to exist?!!?!
Well that sucks....there's always other jobs though. And ones that don't have dumb@ss hicks running the place. He'll find another job. Something good will happen if you give it time. You can't get that upset though, with all this great music waiting for you this weekend. Cheer up. IT'S BONNAROO!!!!
as an electrician - he should not have a hard time finding another job - have fun at Bonnaroo - leave the worries in Memphis - they will be there when you get back
It seems that if you don't go around calling women bit.ches, men f*gs, or throw around racial slurs, you can't be an electrician.
Geez, take it easy on us electricians, will ya? I've never once called a woman a b.itch....I call them smuts.
Kidding, kidding, don't bite my head off.
I'm assuming your boyfriend isn't Union...well, he should be. My Union has done a lot for its members (I'm only a first year apprentice). And we don't have to deal with the Jim Tobin types nearly as much as the non-Union shops...And then there's the pay...well, let's just say it's damn good.
No, you're right, he's not Union. From the very beginning, he's worked alongside a lot of older veterans who are dead set against Union. I can't imagine the reason being anything other than the dues. He just sort of went along with that way of thinking, but I think now it's becoming apparent that it really is there for a reason. Seems to be the way to go.
I'm not too worried about him finding other work, though, it's just insanely bad timing. Another thing is that pretty much everywhere you go requires you know what.
And I'm sorry if I appeared to be hatin on electricians, badfish. I have a real soft spot for them as there are 5 in our family! I keep telling them all to just open up their own shop together.
And thank everyone for trying to cheer us up! It's all good - we just figure there's no better place on earth to blow off some serious steam.
Nah, I was just messing around, I know you weren't serious about that...
He should definately look into a Union...I don't know what it's like where you live, but nothing gets done in this city without a Union shop. The benefits and pay are worth it too - by the time I finish my apprenticeship (a little over 4 years from now) and become a journeyman, the rate is gonna be up around $55/hour.

That is so hard to hear when you are preparing to have a great time. People say it will be the furthest thing from your mind once you are there, but it wouldn't be in my case, I am a bit of a worrier. BUT, perspective helps me... When you are at Bonnaroo, just think about how wonderful things can be. Its just a bump in the road, bumps make smooths more enjoyable. Have a great Bonnaroo! Your boyfriend sounds like he works his ass off, and will find a BETTER job. Feel better.
Holy cow! His bro's a journeyman, doesn't work for a union co, and I KNOW he's not banking that. . . Even though I know wages are probably less here in the south, it still sounds like union is the way to go.
