Its the best show that I have ever seen. It has raised my standards when it comes to watching tv or movies. It is extremely well written and the depth of characters is amazing. I would not call them twists (like the twists in Lost), but the show does alot of a surprising things. Specifically with how they kill off main characters. I wont disclose who but it seems like every year there is a full on - "oh my god, what the f-ck just happened" moments that make you want to watch another episode right away. I jumped into this show late, even though many of my friends have been telling me to get on it. So Best Buy was running a special on the first three seasons at half price - like $27.99 or something and after going a little slow on season 1, I watched 2-4 in like three weeks. You can watch three or four episodes a night and since there is so much stuff going on, you don't get bored with it. There are probably around 10 main characters from season 1, but then each new season adds another 5 main characters.
Placid, you are right on with the Sopranos thought.
By the way - Omar is the baddest guy out there. And I can't wait to see what happens with Marlo/Avon/Omar. I hope that they give us some serious resolutions by the end of this season since it is going to be all over.
McNulty being british was the most unexpected thing. I watched that HBO special and I hadn't got that hyped up to watch something, since I was like 9 and Return to the Jedi was coming out.
Still have to wait for DVD for Season 5 (who knows how long that will take), but to update my post upthread- I've watched Season 4 now and agree that it is hands down the best so far. Show just gets amazinger. My wife is a Chicago Public Schools teacher and it is incredible how true that side of season 4 rang. Unfortunately I've been spoiled on some of the goings on in Season 5 already (deaths), but I can never help myself.
I love this show, but it demands a lot from viewers: multi-year storylines, heavy in local flavor, detailed backgrounds, 3-dimensional characters, and complex moral themes. That's hard to sell to the uninitiated.
this is well said. i had a lot of friends who talked about this show and i tried to watch it on several occasions when it was on HBO at different points in the timeline and could never get into it...sometimes found it difficult to watch even a whole episode. anyway, finally after catching some episodes from season 5 as they're airing now i get it and am really into the show. i definitely need to netflix those first seasons completely but since i'm already this far i might keep watching season 5 through to the end.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

last episode of the series is on sunday night march 9th. as much as i am excited to see this 95 minute finale i am truly sad to see it go. There hasn't really been any activity on this thread since season 5 started so i assume not many people are watching. I hope reading about it though will inspire some folks to check it out.

yep only 10.
I just watched the leak of the last episode. I must say i'm feeling a bit depressed today knowing that it is gone forever. The last episode is roughly 95 minutes and they do a much better job of 'wrapping things up' than i thought they would. there are no happy endings on the wire but they did an excellent job of bringing the series to a close.
