Its a damn shame and while I am in no way calling anyone on here racist. They have done studies that showed the problem The Wire has with viewer number is entirely involved with race. People are just not used to seeing a majority black cast that is so well rounded.

i can see that. but i also have to think that maybe it just goes over people's heads. the writing is soo good and i end rewatching parts just to pick up the little bits of dialogue that soo good/funny that you dont want to miss.
Not only is the Wire easily the best show I've ever seen, its also one of the most provacative, thoughtful, interesting, riveting, well made works of American art produced in my lifetime in any medium, imho. I don't get HBO and have only watched the DVD's (through Season 3), so don't spoil season 4 for me.
For anyone in this thread who hasn't seen it, its basically a 360 degree view of the drug trade in Baltimore. You get the perspective of everyone involved, from users to dealers to homicide cops, narcotics cops, DAs, City Hall, etc. I've never gotten into a cop show before, but this is more of a portrait of urban America then a cop show. Not to mention an amazing character study of more characters than you can count. Do yourself a favor and rent/Netflix disc one of Season 1 if you haven't seen it.
Every season builds and gets better and better with every episode as the story and characters get denser and more complex. The last several episodes of Season Three took my breath away and I can't wait for the next DVDs to come out.
^^^Agreed. And if you were a fan of Homicide: Life on the Street or Oz, you get to see what the other half of the Homicide guys did after the show. I know a few critics have listed it as the best cinematic achievement of the year (season 4 that is).
I don't have HBO, so I haven't gotten to see it. I'm just hoping they don't drag their asses in the mud putting out this season like they did season 3. (Otherwise, I might just have to find alternative methods of obtaining the episodes...
The next season will be the last one and its focus will be on the media. This season was fantasic. That show just flys by though. They could easily do 40 episodes a seaon and you wouldnt notice.

Season 4 topped the previous 3 in my opinion. I was a huge fan of the Sopranos back in the day, and this show makes it just seem like a silly soap opera.

McNulty is a bad dude and the only cop I've ever seen have sex with a prostitute while busting her.
Make that TWO prostitutes...haha.
Also i did not know that Dominic West (McNulty) was British until i saw a documentary on the show. He has a pretty thick accent and he really pulls off the whole 'east coast' thing really well in the show.
He doesn't just pull it off really well, he pulls it off perfectly. I know what you mean, I had no idea and then I heard him on another show and was like "Whaaaaaaaa?"
i thought bunk was from new orleans. i remember seeing him in "katrina: the aftermath" on hbo and he was a large part of the show. the story he told was about his father and how he came from nothing, bought a house that was later destroyed in the hurricane and then not understanding why he was not given any insurance coverage after paying for 50 years.

I'm probably wrong (maybe misunderstood something on a commentary track). I love Bunk.

sorry, i had to search and resurrect this thread as i am currently working my way through season 1 again. HBO is currently in production of the final season (5). so let's talk about it! anybody else that cannot wait for season 5? whats your favorite season?

I love this show, but it demands a lot from viewers: multi-year storylines, heavy in local flavor, detailed backgrounds, 3-dimensional characters, and complex moral themes. That's hard to sell to the uninitiated. IMHO, it's time well spent; last year's education/"no child left behind" theme was a real eye-opener for me, as was the previous year's focus on legalizing drugs, or the season before that's examination of port security, and so on.

Anyone know what the theme will be this year?
main setting for Season 5 will be the media (i think focusing on the Baltimore Sun Times), and a main theme will be homelessness

ok so i have been rewatching the wire onDemand the last few weeks getting geared up for season 5. it airs jan 6 2008. Check out this show if you haven't.
Thanks for resurrecting this thread....I don't get HBO so I had never heard of this show.....but now I want to go rent the first season and check it out. I am not a big TV person (or movies even.... ) but this one sounds like it could be something I could get into. I worked with PD's peripherally for many years and so I know quite a bit about that side of the story....good and bad....and I've worked with the media (so season 5 would be interesting! Not enough to get me to subscribe to HBO tho') so yeah, this could be VERY interesting. Though I have never been to Baltimore (Hon!) so I might not get the local references....LOL!
