"Insomnia" is one of the best books i've ever read! If you've read (or plan to read) "The Dark Tower" series, you really need to check it out. It's amazing...and it could easily be considered an 8th volume in King's epic fairy-tale. But again, the whole thing is absolutely unbelievable!
Don't let the film adaptation of "Hearts In Atlantis" discourage you from reading the book. The movie is okay but, it only skims the surface of the least interesting part of the story. It's a collection of pseudo-short stories, all losely tied together by the memories of childhood friends. It's really interesting and very well done. Definitely worth your time.

ok with the DT movie rumors going around now I must say I cant stop thinking about who could play Roland, well I just watched casino royal again last night and I think Daniel Craig could possibly pull it off, he'd need to lose some weight, but he defiantly has the icy gunslinger stare. Thoughts?

The Dark Tower Is Great! Everyone should read it! In 'Wizard & Glass" king mentions that Suzanna lays-back and crosses her legs. ??? For anyone who has read the the story, you will understand why i'm mentioning this. For anyone else, read the damn books! You will dig them.
Just trying to keep this thread alive.

Maybe he meant her stubs. I don't know about you, but as I read through the books, it was easier to forget that she didn't have legs. Especially when Detta took over. Eatin' frogs in the swamp...that shi t was messed up.
You were absolutely right. So far, it's been my favorite read!

Oy is my favorite character in the books. Such a unique character.
Yeah, Oy is awesome. One of my favorite moments of the saga so far has been the ka-tet introducing themselves to the Calla folk..you know, when Oy gets out of Jake's pullover and confronted the whole town. What a true crowd pleaser!
Here's an illustration from Wolves of the Calla. I have no scanner, so i had to use a crappy digicam. It's still prety cool though, i like Oy's curly tail ;D
I'm almost finished with Song of Susannah.
I can say that The Dark Tower is the trippiest "novel" i have ever read. I'm at the stanza where Roland & Eddie meet "The Writer".
As far as connections between King's other books and the DT series, there are too many to mention. Flagg in in a lot of books(The Stand, Eye of the Dragon). Connections to the DT world are in most of his books and he's written about 75 books. What I can think of off the top of my head are: Talisman, Black House Gerald's Game, Everything's Eventual, Hearts inAtlantis, Froma Buick 8, Rose madder, Salem's Lot, The stand, Insomnia, It, and minor references inmore than I can remember. I got to the point I was hoping the next novel would NOT have a DT reference.
I just got done re-reading the whole series again a few weeks back. I would agree that Insomnia is an unacknowledged 8th Dark Tower book. It should be read prior to starting the final book The Dark Tower. If you are reading the books now, imagine waiting 8 years between the end of The Waste Lands and the release of Wizard and Glass.TORTURE! I would also recommend the short story "The Mist" in Skeleton Crew as it deals with thinnies and todash monsters.
Really, read Insomnia before vol 7, The Dark Tower? Cuz i'm almost finished with Song of Susannah, and i am considering. Why exactly should i read Insomnia first?
The final volume kind of ties up all the loose ends, including the back story of Insomnia. I'd probably read Insomnia after the entire series just to keep the proper flow of DT. Reading Insomnia afterwards will not affect anything much.

I totally agree, it was torturous. My dad practically forced me to start the Dt series when i was 12, waiting for wizard and the glass was crippling. However, as much as i love th series i think mr king kinda rushed the last books. Don't get me wrong it was a great ending but i think he wrote himself into a corner with the tower, i mean serisously, harry potter's flying gernades? I haven't seen the comic but have heard good things. As for the movie i think they should pick someone who is unknown instead of an established actor. As long as Hally berry is NOT sussanah and haley jo-osmond is NOT jake.
ps I would love for the DT movie to be animation or even in the rotoscoping style, that would kick arse.

You don't have to read it first, but it is deeply related to Roland and even more so the Crimson King. I don't want to give any more than that away. Enjoy the tower stories and you will probably pick up Insomnia just to figure it out.
I read alot of books and everyone kept telling me to read this series. so I Picked up the gunslinger a month ago and Its hard for me to get through. But if you guys are assuring me the rest of the series are easier reads Im going to try to finish it this week. Hopefully the rest wont be so tough.
I've read the series a few times and have NEVER been able to get through "The Gunslinger". It gets better as it goes along. I'm not a DT fanatic (but I've read every King book) but its well worth the read. IMHO the peripherals of the story are better than the main story line, but that's just me.

Very true! When you finish the DT books, be sure to read "Insomnia" (probably my favorite single King book) and "Hearts In Atlantis". They are both extensions of/back story to the DT series
