I'm new to the boards (and a first time Roo-er this year) and I was just wondering what the karma points are at the bottom of everyone's profile? How do you get points?
It is a system to encourage a positive environment. Directly under karma you will see two buttons: exalt and smite. If you believe someone has posted something that is worth giving credit to then for, you would hit "exalt" under their karma rating, this will increase their karma by 1. Alternatively, if someone has done something offensive, you can "smite" them. This will lower their karma by one. You can either exalt or smite someone one per hour. It's a nice system because in general , everyone wants good karma, so everyone tries to be courteous or entertaining. Also, it's an annonymous system, so you can smite without fear of getting in an argument, but you can also let people know when you've exalted or smitten them. Anyways, welcome to the board! Good work putting this in the right category, have some karma!
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

Thanks imsquare17 and trippindaisy! Karma for you both! If these boards are any indication of how friendly people will be at Bonnaroo, then I know I'm in for a great time!
perhaps so, but i'd rather see anonymous smiting than see someone say 'i smited you' and then have to deal with reading an additional 3 pages of arguments back and forth about why it was wrong to smite them for their opinion, who's a d-ck, etc etc.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

I dont think everyone on this board is that immature, karma doesnt matter that much, actually it doesnt matter at all. Anonymous smiting is like hitting a dog with the paper 20 minutes after is pisses on the rug, the dog doesnt know what it was for, and therefor it was pointless.
shrug, i guess we both use the karma system differently. i don't want to have to come out and tell anyone what they said was offensive/wrong, i want them to figure it out for themselves (assuming they even care about karma). i even prefer to anonymously exalt, though i've definitely told some when i was exalting.

Just a suggestion, but if you feel the need to smite someone, tell them, same as if you'd exalt them. I think anonymous smiting is kinda pointless.
I smote you because this idea is stupid.
HA! No, i'm joking, I fully agree. Plus, writing down your reasoning will help you make sure that the smite is really deserved, and not just a result of past arguments, or that you're just hungry and grouchy or something.

Do you mean your own personal exalt/smite buttons? Because you'll never see your own exalt/smite buttons, as you're not allowed to award yourself karma. Everyone else can see them under your name though. :thumbs up:
