I'm actually really surprised that so many young people chose books like;
1984 and Brave New World.
I actually had to look for these books when I was in High School.
Jeb Bush's scholastic program hasn't exactly outlawed the books, but I certainly never read any books that had me think for myself or develop ideas about what totalitarianism is.
I DID however read Night by Elie Weisel about 6 different times.
So I know how shitty the holocaust was. When they asked me to read it my 7th time in Junior year I finally told them no.
I am in the process of rereading the Harry Potter books from Sorceror's Stone all the way through before the last book is released in July. I just love them. I'm on book 2 now. The rest will be a breeze.
Other favorites: Enchantment - Orson Scott Card Virgin Blue - Tracy Chevalier Howl's Moving Castle - Diane Wynne Jones
Can you tell I like fantasy books? Most of the have an interesting twist on the tale, some kind of wierd time travel parallel. Howl's is very excellent in this regard (if you've seen the animated Miyazaki movie, the book is even better)
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

I read Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness instead.
My 14 year old is erading 1984 by choice right now - she has to read Animal Farm and Red Badge of Courage for school but she chose 1984 for recreational reading

No I haven't. Have meant to pick it up but haven't. Good stuff?
Ender's Game is definitely worth a read. I'm a science fiction fan, so it was kinda required reading, but it really is exceptionally light on the spacey stuff (most of it towards the end). It changed my views on the reality of pacifism, the necessity of violence, and the cost of truth. The two sequels, Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide, are good reads as well, but a little more fantastical.

My favorite book probably still is Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. I remember we had to read it as a sample in 7th grade English, and I was so amazed by it I made my mom take me to Barnes and Nobles so I could get it.. so yeah, probably my fave

Oh, that is a good one. And I'm at my mom's right now and am pretty sure she has a copy. I think I'm going to borrow it.
