Stephen King's "The Dark Tower". Granted, it's actually a series of books but, it is one story. If you haven't read it, you should. I'm not usually a fan of the whole fantasy genre but, King's approach is genuinely amazing. The first book does move kind of slow but, (i think) it's a necessary step in the overall story's progression. It's incredibly epic story, done with the attention to detail and human interaction that only Stephen King can provide. Check it out.
The Illuminatus! Trilogy: The Eye in the Pyramid, The Golden Apple, Leviathan and the Historical Illiminatus Trilogy All by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea
ANYTHING by Robert Anton Wilson is worth readig and re-reading!!!
i also loovveeedd angels and demons....that book actually got me back into reading because i;ve always been a super slow reader and everyone told me to read it so I picked it up and finished it in 3 days. Normally a book that big would have taken me months! I also still need to read the rest of the Harry Potters, I've only read the first two
Good thread, I was looking into getting some good reading done on a cross country flight and I needed some suggestions.
My favorite is The Fountainhead - Ayn Rand
For easy reading, the new book (but really just a set of old essays) by Chuck Klosterman - IV is a good "popcorn book" - if that term makes any sense - with alot of interesting interviews with current and former Bonnaroo bands, and various other items of interest.

my top three would be:
- On the Road: I just finished this, and it was absolutely incredible. - Slaughterhouse Five: my first vonnegut book, I reread it constantly. - Brave New World: I'm so happy they make you read this in high school, definitely life changing for me.
"I like too many things and get all confused and hung-up running from one falling star to another till I drop. This is the night, what it does to you. I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion."
central park in the summertime... the closest thing to nature
I'm bored and procrastinating from writing my paper so I thought I would ask....
my favorite: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, I highly reccommend it to everyone
I was coming here just to post this book. This book really is one of the best I have ever read and seriously everyone should check it out. That or Sohpie's World, but I cant remeber the authors name off the top of my head right now.
A lot of good books mentioned here! I read Sophie's World when I was 15 and it helped me understand the world so much better. I'm planning on reading Atlas Shrugged this summer and I'm dorkily excited. The Handmaid's Tale is one my favorites, definitely...
All that said, you may think its a glorified romance novel and it actually is, but I love it and I think everyone should read it - The Time Traveler's Wife. Its just the best story.
And I, too, am procrastinating a paper. Inforoo is wonderful for that.

My official answer would have to be The Bible. And barring that, I can't say I have a favorite book, much like a favorite film or favorite band. When I think of books I've loved, the first that comes to mind is Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas R. Hofstadter. The author has described it as, "A metaphorical fugue on minds and machines in the spirit of Lewis Carroll", and I don't think I could do any better than that.

I'm a big fan of the Alchemist and Heartbreaking Work.
I also have always enjoyed Great Expectations by Dickens, Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I Know this Much is True by Wally Lamb, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.
For those who like a bit of history, I'm currently enjoying "Devil in the White City" which all takes place during the Chicago World's Fair of 1892.
