Haha... No, I was referring to the fact that it is a private, invite only way to share music. I was curious as to whether or not the "private-ess" made it legal.
Which means, I dont know. Im on a university network, and they are cracking down on us... We shall see.

I thought you really didn't have a choice but to keep your ratio up....or else they cancel your account. I use Oink religiously and my ratio is about .75. I have yet to donate, but I'm always getting around to it. That way I'd get some invites to send out.
its much harder to keep it up on oink then it is on demonoid. but if you just let everything you get seed for a month you should be fine. as long as you have your ports forwarded. downloading popular stuff that you might not losten to is required on oink. atleast for me it has been. but im able to keep my ratio around 1.0 pretty easily

Atlantic Broadband here in Miami now throttles bittorent packets on their network so my bt speeds went from 300+kb/s to 10kb/s. And now I have almost no upload capability with bt. So essentially I am dead in the water on bt now. Any other transfer protocol works perfect still. I even called them to see what's up and was told flat out that Atlantic BB now throttles bittorent packets.
And I use Azureus with encryption so they have found a way to detect bt traffic. I bitched saying I use bt for etree and shnflac.net which are 100% legal and I was told "we can't determine who is using bt legally versus illegally so we block most bt traffic."
Nice. On that analogy evey car should be illegal since sometimes people hit and run. And Miami Beach only has one high speed providor so I am SOL for now.

I don't have any problem and 95% of the stuff I have seeded is unpopular. Some of the highest percentage of stuff I upload comes from that 95%.
it migh just be that im new. i have downloaded alot of not so popular stuff that is also old. if i get something new it does good. but shows from years ago dont do so hot.

There are hundreds of perfectly legit SBD recordings of Phish and Dead shows on Oink. The ones on Oink frequently are not active on etree, jerome's, or shnflac at the same time so it's a nice extra resource.
AHHHH!!! Trouble already. I was trying to upload a few things to get my ratio up early and I can't. I made the torrent file, I uploaded it into the tracker, but it's not seeding. It said I have to download it before it will seed, but when I try to download it I can't. It just sits there.
It didn't tell me that I couldn't though. It's on the tracker and comes up when I search, but it says there's no seeders. But Azureus shows it seeding. I've only downloaded one thing and I have left it seeding, but no one' s downloading it. I thought I'd fulfill a request to get things moving.
aslong as you download less then 5 gigs you dont have to worry about your ratio. make sure you read through the faq and the forum. there are many very specific rules about what can be uploaded. your best bet is to just download and then leave everything seeding. ive had things that i downloaded that got no upload for a week. then all of sudden it will upload 300 mb in a day. if you can just leave everything you download seeding all the time you should be fine. mine goes 24/7 and i havent had a problem keeping a good ratio. make sure your ports are forwarded too. if you dont know how they have pretty detailed instrucions on oink. check the forum and the faq. its troublesome at first. but after you get a couple of gigs of stuff and get rolling you shouldnt have any problems. if your ratio really sux dont go over 5 gigs until you get it up.
also look form something new and popular. i made a killing off of korn unplugged and the new fountains of wayne album. i also got this last weeks umphreys shows right as they posted and have done well on them too. the older something is the more seeders and fewer downloaders there will be. that was my problem. i was gettin shows form roo 02 and old phish shows. but even those will do allright if you let them seed for weeks.
I got my uploads moving. I'm not sure I understand how I did it, but I did it. :-) I did check the requirements. They seem reasonable. The big one is to make sure the bitrate is at least 192

You have to make sure its not a transcoded 192 too as well. So if you got it from a questionable place, check the integrity. Theres FAQ's on how to do that. They dont much care for transcodes on oink.
and be sure its not allready up. they frown on duplicates also. its pretty strict. but if it keeps the place working like it does im all for it... oink is awesome!
