So I am bored at work so I thought I would start a controversial thread (well controversial for the board anyway) …. As a whole, do males appreciate rock music more then females?
Facts: More males attend concerts then women More males buy music then women More males in rock bands then women
Post by hippiehippieshake on May 10, 2007 11:44:27 GMT -5
yea i dunno. about your first two points, maybe men are just more into spending money on music... whereas women spend money on clothes & shoes ? (girly fashion thread!!)
i'm going where the sun keeps shining, thru' the pouring rain, going where the weather suits my clothes. backing off of the north east wind, sailing on summer breeze, and skipping over the ocean like a stone.

i think you really can't catagorize people into catagories cuz even though men and women are very different there a a lot of men who are mroe feminin than masculine and vice versa. every soul is different, with different tastes
*edit- catagrize people into catagories........wow i'm smart

I'll consider myself a lucky man if I ever meet and marry a woman with the same musical tastes as me. I think my present girlfriend is slowly becoming that. We'll see....

I don't know - depends on your definition of "rock" - you have to factor that in also
I mean I love hard stuff like Disturbed, Korn, etc. Boz likes them also ( he introduced me to them) but he is more into jam bands and blue grass.
rock to me covers almost anything other then country and classical ... boy will i get flack for this, but hip hop, blues, alt, metal, anything you might hear on the most popular nontalk radio station in your city ... cr*** i didnt answer that very well i guess ... i just wanted a distinction between classical and my points ... there may be as many women in classical music as men, not sure ...
well - the only thing that does not get heard in my house is country (and that is not necessarily true - we just do not listen to any "new" country - more the old stuff, ya know Willie, Waylon and the boys)
One daughter plays violin - so she listens to classical alot - but is also into MCR, AFI, Fall Out Boy, Green Day and some of the bands I listen to
The other daughter plays piano and dances ballet - so she also listens to classical - but in more into boy bands of the past N'sync, Backstreet Boys, Hillary Duff type stuff
Boz and I will listen to just about anything as long as it is good music

I think an example of what I am asking about is this: look at the boards and see what people are saying ….. by far (I think lol) the majority of people that are coming to the roo by themselves are men … there are a lot of couples and some single women, but as far as solo, its mostly men …. Now maybe that doesn’t have anything to do with music, just freedom, lack of fear, who knows, but I think a lot of it is gender related … if you think of your friends that go to fests, are most of them women, most of them men, or you don’t have any friends that go to festivals lol … cr****

I have to say at the moe show i was at the other night, there was a LONG line for the MENS room and NO line for the ladies room. That is def. saying something!!!
More males attend concerts then women More males buy music then women More males in rock bands then women
these are more social problems than anything else. not to sound like a total feminist, because I can hardly claim to be, but women have expectations placed on them and many do not even TRY different types of music.
Or they do, go to an adrenaline-filled rock concert and are in danger of being raped or drugged. But then maybe they love music so they start to play and then things go the way of Gwen Stefani - the whole band is lost to some supposed sex symbol because that's they way women are supposed to be, according to record labels etc. Or they stay true to their roots but it's a rough road to go, record labels won't hire the real women rockers and if they do they can only be bombshell fake rockers. or like the one band in the 80's there's a skinny girl in the group and she gets all the hot face time while the thicker girls gets only head shots during the chorus. Only the pretty women, for the most part, make it in the music business. Looks help guys in bands but being in a band can make a complete jagoff look hot, this is not the case for most women in bands. At least from what I can see.
I blame society. Not women. We love music, and most of us try to enjoy it as much as you do. we just have more things to take in to consideration. And your generalizations effing SUCK.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
I agree. It's definitely a social thing. I also don't think it's an issue of genre, I think it's more about how guys tend to get more into music, in general. It definitely doesn't apply to everyone, but of all the people I've met who just aren't really into music, I think almost all of them are ladies. This isn't really a question of stylistic preference, but one of how people choose to spend their time. I just think more guys spend time getting into music, generally, than women.

if you are saying my generalizations effing SUCK .... well read on
I made this thread and I started one about tool at the roo somewhat both based on generalizations ….. if you read what I say though, I never say ALL, EVERY, words like that …. But there are reasons for generalizations dah, and if you give it two seconds of thought, you might agree …. Do ALL women wear dresses and NO men wear dresses? … of course not, especially at places like the roo …. Now to generalize, are most dresses worn by women or men? …. The roo, since the roo is commonly known as a jam band festival, do ALL people that go there smoke “stuff” …. Do even most, I would even guess no …. Generalization … because the roo is a jam band fest, do some people smoke illegal drugs? .. dah …. So when I posed the question, who likes rock more men/women, that is a generalization …. I didn’t say, do ALL men like rock and NO women like rock …. I don’t like people that stereotype either, but people that think we are all clones, with no difference, or everyone is different to the nth degree are birds of a feather, closed minded …. Cr*****

In my life, the male serious music fans have outnumbered the female serious music fans by 10 to 1. I don't know if that means anything or not but, it's without a doubt the truth. Just my experience.

i thinkt that men rule the stats becasue anything is lumped into rock. every dude who buys a limp bizkit, nickleback, or fallout boy cd is lumped as a rock fan. of course men buy more of that crap. more men are dumb. now on the other hand if your talking about real rock take a look around when your getting crazy at a show. i bet 75 percent of the people getting crazy are chicks. even though there are more men at the show. so maybe the ladies win. but in the end i know its a tie. for true rock lovers everyone loves it as much as they can possibly love it so its an all way tie.

point made ... btw, are you going to waka this year .... we are hitting it up b4 the roo ... and check out the transgression festival at copper mnt if you havent already ... cr****
All I know is that Mrs. Mac is very glad to see me go off to concerts and festivals alone. She has her own activities (gernally quieter and less crowded) and I have mine and that makes our relationship even stronger - though it took us 10 years to figure it out.

i would love to make it to waka. i think its the best lineup of the summer. but after the whole cop thing last year im gonna avoid the whole kansas thing. ill be at the burning river band family jam at nelson ledges instead. and id love to do transgression too. its good to see you westerners getting some umph/bisco festival love. but it seems like somehwere between chicago and philly would have been nice. like nelson ledges ;D but i will be at all good that weekend anyhow. i look forward to hearing about it though.

hey i understand what you were getting at and I didn't respond without putting thought in to it.
So, more women do scrapbooking than men. More men than women race motocross. More women than men are nurses. More men than women play video games. All generally true statements.
Now perhaps generalizations weren't the right thing for me to say sucked. I just think it sucks in general. I guess I tend to hope things are more balanced than they really are, and now I'll be paying attention to this a little bit more. I certainly hadn't noticed it at shows before, but I don't really pay attention to it, since many of my activities are more male-gender-based anyways.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
Well, I guess I am one of those women exceptions! I love Rock, and usually get into more of the harder and more alternative bands than any of my friends male or female, though more of my female friends actually end up liking some of it while the guys just pretend to while they are interested in dating me then lose interest when things start going bad. What schmucks. But then I try to keep an open mind and listen to everything at least once. I swear that ANYONE who puts out more than 2 records will record a song I like no matter the genre. But in general I am a rocker/headbanger chick. RATM. Godsmack. Disturbed. Stained, Three Days Grace. White Stripes.. all those are all on my list!
i think you really can't catagorize people into catagories cuz even though men and women are very different there a a lot of men who are mroe feminin than masculine and vice versa. every soul is different, with different tastes

That's like redundantly repeating yourself over and over again several times.

The only show I've been to where there was no men's room line and a women's line around the corner was Tori Amos. I would have been able to walk while whizzing from one end of the urinals to the other without interference.
