Last week I though my clutch was slipping. It was. Why was it? Because I had a small hole inside the bell housing and all my transmission fluid was leaking onto the clutch. I realized this when on my way to work the next day when the transmission starting whining and making all sorts of funny nosies. So I call my uncle who has been a mechanic longer than most of us have been alive. He makes some calls and tells me the transmission is going to run me about 1000. Not including clutch, fluid and various other parts. Ouch. So I tell my buddy, he's been working on cars for the last 15 years. Turns out he has one in his garage. He'll sells it to me for 250. Nice, I pick up a clutch and fluid. Two days later I find out my dads legs seem to be deteriorating probably won't be able to able to walk in six months. One day after that I find out that my dept is up for bid (we contract for a large cleaning company). I have about a 1 and 6 chance of being able to keep my job. Not even talking about the people that work for me. Life is sucking at this point. So today I head over to my buddies place to replace the transmission. What should of been a 4 hour job turned into an 8 hour job. Both axles were jammed in and several bolts were fused. Ever try to remove a transmission with the two axles still attached. IT SUCKS. So we ended up getting it out. Had to break one of the axles to do it but got it out. So we get the new transmission in and he had another axle from a parts car. We used some bolts from it as well. Then another buddy shows up to BS and he sees the jury rigged dristubtor He tells me I've got two of those at home. Want one? The advice? Be nice to your Father. He might loan you his truck for the week, and you might have to get him on and off the john. Be cool with your friends they'll help you fight a busted tranny and hook you up with some car parts. (My buddy refused to take money for the hlep so I bought his family dinner and will buy him some tools.) Always be nice to you significant other because you'll show up 4 hours late and look like this.
Never forget extra bolt for your axles either. Those came in handy.
Sounds like there's a hell of a lot on your plate right now -- hang in there. I picked up this little bit of wisdom from a friend a couple months back and it has stuck with me since. Whenever it feels like it's all going to shit, it tends to pop into my head...

^Yeah man, it sounds like things are pretty sh*tty right now but, you seem like you've got the right perspective. That, coupled with good friends and a good woman to come home to, can really go a long way towards helping you keep it together.
Be cool with your friends they'll help you fight a busted tranny...
Not knowing anything about cars, that confused me for a second. ;D
Seriously though, digging 'Press-On' nails out of your forehead is no fun at all!
instant karma for a tranny joke...
as for the original poster - goddamn.
To me, it would seem the car is sorted. so that's one thing off your plate. the situation with your dad is totally out of your hands - as is the job.
maybe you lose the job, but maybe the next one that comes along is a lot better / more lucrative? (that's what happened to me, so it's not that i'm talking about some fantasy land).
the dad thing though - that really sucks. what's wrong?
From what I understand is the arthritis in his joints, is getting worse. He was at a T7 or 8 last year. I'm not sure what he's at now. Yet his bones are "falling apart." He's broken his foot more times than remember. He's having problems moving, balancing and standing too long. He fell in the bathroom and broke the sink trying to stop him self. As he puts it, "I just takes me longer to get going." Meaning he can't get out of bed for a few hours after he wakes up. Hurts too much. He went to the doctor Saturday for an MRI, I'll wager they give him another bone density scan. Mom said it's scary to watch him try stairs (my parents house is a two story). Since he's retired and Mom works, were both worried he'll fall when no one is home. I told him I was going to get the "I've fallen and can't get up" things. He told me he'll shoot me. He's a tough old coot he'll be ok for a little while. I'm just worried because if he continues at this rate he'll be in a wheel-chair before christmas. I've seen it happen before, once someone retires and can't stay active they just kind of fade. So be nice to your old coot. I'm just hoping mine doesn't try to shoot me.
I'm really sorry to hear all that man. Life is a series of ups and downs. Take the highs with the lows and know that neither of em or gonna last forever. At least you've got good people around to help you along your way.
Thanks for taking the time to type all that out, man. Sometimes our adversity can be a backwards blessing. If only as a reminder to others that life is short. Things don't matter, people do. Great to hear what you're going through; I don't feel so alone.
Hey...so I thought I'd share mine. Our truck has is a 99 and has alot of miles on it and we are trying to get it in shape to tow a trailer to Roo. 1000 (clutch), 500(some sh*t for emissions - which, I'm okay with), 300, and 500 again. The dealership called on Sat. to relay the last 500 and we went and picked it up. Called parts stores, not clearly knowing what part we truly needed for two hours until....ureka. Now we know its the drive assembly (which sucks) and I AM NOT paying 550 to have it replaced. No one has the part without ordering it and everyone wants a bite. After several gruling hours and many fights, I call a salvage yard. It's 12:00 and this guy tells me they close in 1 hour and my car is still @ the dealer. So rush to get it, zip to get my brother, and off to the salvage yard that is already closed, but he lets us in. They have a 98 but there is no guarantee that it's compatible yet. My brother and the "guy" spend the next hour trying to get this part outta this car in the middle with limited tools. Nightmare. I know it's not happenin when surely it comes out. One little peice of something that's evidentally worth 275.00. Anyway, we now need a spec. ord. part that's going to cost a butt load to put it in. Needless to say, the "guy - Cliff" at the junk yard let us have the part for free, and he helped us take it off and we got to hang out with him. So we're getting there. Cross your fingers that it's compatible guys and karma to Cliff!!! Oh, and I found a dollar in the Walmart parking lot today....Life is not so bad.
