More and more sites are claiming it was a (very expensive) publicity stunt for the movie. Eddie looked a little too calm and collected to me when posing beside the wreck afterwards for photos. I would have been crying my eyes out...
They got at least $1.5 million in coverage for the movie from this incident, so it would be a wash for the producer (although a piece of automotive art was destroyed in the process).
I don't believe the crash was intentional, either for publicity or for insurance money. It may make the movie more high profile this week, but it'll all be forgotten in 2 weeks when the movie finally opens.
