John Edwards had a rally scheduled at the Ryman (mother church of country music) today with Del McCoury, Sam Bush, etc. With the VA Tech thing I was in a funk and wondered if I should go. But I thought seeing how Edwards handled himself would tell me a lot.
When I got there it was obvious that everyone was trying to feel their way through the event, the audience and performers alike. At about 4pm Edwards arrived and walked quietly to a seat in the front row. Rodney Crowell came on stage and said “We planned on having a grand ole time today, with some good times, raucous music and good politics but none of that seems too important just now. We’ve decided that this should a time when we can all just get together and help heal one another. ”
Del came on and played some mountain gospel, Chely Wright came on and played a great, new song she’d never played in public. Sam Bush played some Bill Monroe. Rodney played an upbeat song of redemption and then Lance Miller sang a song that Merle Haggard sang at Tammy Wynnette’s funeral.
As it turned out several local celebs showed up just to add their thoughts and prayers (Ashley Judd, Vince Gill) and finally Edwards spoke.
You may or may not be aware that Edwards lost a son (Edwards didn’t mention this) and it was evident that he felt for the families in VA. He basically said some days don’t end up how you expected them to at the start and this was no time for politics. He then led the group in a short prayer for the students, families and ourselves. He spoke for maybe a minute and a half.
Vince Gill then invited anyone who wanted to come up on stage to sing “Amazing Grace”. And we left.
It was definitely a moving, healing and appropriate event. No contributions were accepted and no names or mailing lists collected. I am impressed by Edwards empathy and common sense (things few politicians have) in handling the situation. He definitely gained some ground with me.
Thanks for the review. Unfortunately my work schedule wouldn't allow me to go, so I'm glad to hear from someone who did attend. Sounds like I would have been impressed with Edwards.

According to wikipedia (I know):
Their son, Wade, was born in 1979 and daughter Cate followed in 1982. In 1996, Wade, age 16, was killed in a car accident when strong winds swept his Jeep off a North Carolina highway.

John Edwards was supposed to be in Roanoke tonite for a campaign rally and FREE concert by bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley. the event has been postponed because of what happened at VA Tech.
i thought about going just to see the free concert. but i guess i will just have to wait until Bonnaroo to see Mr. Stanley. I don't really care about seeing Mr. Edwards.
