Inspired by a mention in the Presidential thread, I thought this deserved a thread of it's own.
I think that electric vehicles are a lot further along than most of us realize. After watching Who Killed the Electric Car, I started researching electric vehicles that I could use. I ended up purchasing an Ego Electric Scooter (sort of a moped like thing that looks like PeeWee Herman's bicycle) It's awesome and totally fun to drive around town. egovehicles.com/
And check out this video of a new car by ZAP. If this thing was on the market at a reasonable price, no one would be using gasoline any more.
It does great on hills. I mean, it slows down a little bit, but not that bad.
It says it takes 6 hours to recharge it to full capacity, but I haven't worn the battery down that far yet. The furthest I've ridden it was 5 miles across town to my dad's house. I plugged it in while I was there and it was fully charged by the time I was ready to go home. It's so easy to ride, I can even wear a skirt while I'm riding it.
The only downside is I have to rethink my routes and go through neighborhoods and take less busy and slower streets so I don't interfere with traffic for my own safety. The more the gas prices go up this summer, the more I will be riding it.
If we would have kept up Carter's level of research into alt energy (meager as it was) we'd have had a viable electric vehicles. Still, There's beginning to be a pretty wide selection on electric options.

I think it's important with these things to be careful with your electricity source. An electric vehicle that just plugs into the wall without contacting your power company about getting environmentally friendly electricity is not all that much better than a gas-powered car.
