I had some while in Barcelona a while ago, it just got me really wasted... no real hallucinations or anything like it's rumored to cause. Definitely fun to drink though.
They sell a derivative here in Tennessee in a lot of liquor stores, call Absente', and I'm not sure how close it is to the real deal. If it is close to the real deal, it's an insanely strong-tasting peppermint/something awful blend, and it made all of our faces go red as a beet. It's fun to surprise people with, but we couldn't get too drunk off it (one of my friends did).
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

A faux-absinthe liquor called Absente, made with southern wormwood (Artemisia abrotanum) instead of regular wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), is sold legally in the United States and does not contain thujone.
Thujone is supposed to be the 'trippy' element of absinthe. Apparently, you can't import absinthe containing thujone, although other substances with high thujone counts (sage and sage oil) are not likewise banned.
Bought some that was made in Spain (containing thujone) when I was down in St. Maarten for my honeymoon last year. Saving it for Bonnaroo!!!
I've heard many people talk about their experiences but none of them have enjoyed any special effects. They usually admit it's a different type of buzz but nothing really more than being really drunk off of the Green Fairy.
^ yea to really get the absinthe that makes you trip, you have to travel to dam or to Czech. it wont be shipped to US. while in Czech, make sure to get some of the worlds finest crystal dinning ware
you can buy it at just about any liquor store in new zealand but.... as far as it... making you trip... it doesnt... like that whole pouring it through sugar cubes...... thing.... so i guess that the Absinthe you can buy here isnt "real" in that sense.... just has that Absinthe taste... its still 80%....

Yeah, I was gonna say that the Absente is made with a different kind of wormwood, but there ya go (wikipedia is the best). I've heard a lot of reports from people that drank the real thing and just got drunk, but if you get drunk enough off of anything, you're gonna get pretty crazy (wine, anyone?)...besides, don't worry about tripping off alcohol. There'll be plenty of other substitutes on-site.

Thinking about some Absinthe. Its illegal to sell, but legal to have and drink. Anyone with any input please
We had some in Mexico. Strong and nasty tasting but intoxicating unlike anything else. My bf ended up playing volleyball in the pool for hours, he was having a great time ... but he doesn't really remember it and was wrecked for the next few days.
its a glass bottle, (would suck for them to take a $200 bottle from you) and you need to drink an awful lot to get "something other than" drunk off it. 1 bottle over 1 weekend wouldn't be enough.

The interesting thing about thujone is it is that it competes with alcohol for your neurotransmitters. In anutshell, Thujone tends to stave off the more toxic affects of alcohol (dizziness, nausea, etc.) in the short term, allowing you to consume more alcohol in a shorter time than without it. Combine w/ the fact that most absinthe is 80% alcohol or more, drinking the green fairy can let one get far more drunk before noticing the distressing symptoms than with conventional spirits. Of course, in the long run, drinking extreem amounts of alcohol will still have negative affects (i.e. thujone does NOT make one resistant or immune to alcohol poisioning, though it can make it more likely that poisioning will sneak up on you unnoticed). also, most accounts of Thujone/absinthe beeing a hallucinogen stem from the accounts of 18th Cen. heavy absinthe drinkers. Thujone is processed by the body very slowly, and habitual absinthe drinking can lead to a toxic buildup of thujone that can result in a toxic psychosis. Absinthe is great for getting really drunk, but it is not a hallucinogen. check that erowid link posted in the 1st reply for more info.

Personally, I love absinthe. It's pretty strong, but I like the taste and the buzz. In fact, I had some Friday. Wish I'd stuck with it and not switched to red wine, but that's my own fault. As much as I enjoy it, though, it's just liquor. It's not a magical elixir with mind altering properties any more than, say, vodka.
i just brought some home from italy, the real deal. me, my boyfirend, and a friend have drank almost one of the two bottles. it definatley gives you a different buzz, but we haven't seen the fairy yet. and unless you love licorice you won't like how it taste, especially since you have to mix it with water to get the wormwood to activate(which makes it harder to down than a shot.) it's worth trying if you can get it easily. the stuff that's sold here doesen't have the wormwood in it, so it's just really strong liquor. but it's worth trying.
There is one site that guarantee shipment to the USA (and they do come through too).......Although, I kind of doubt there is enough time for shipment before the Festivities.

Try this.
Grow wormwood. It isn't too difficult, and once you have an exceptable plant, you can extract the thujone.
From there, depending on your amount of time you can devote, you may either keep the thujone as is or make absinthe.
My friend's mom grew wormwood and we used Everclear to extract the thujone. We then packed a pipe full of the dry, green substance. I think if there is a dream-like, trippy affect one gets from "real" absinthe, we experienced it. Maybe I'm wrong, though. I mean, Absinthe has alcohol in it, so we weren't drunk which would increase the affects.

Or easier still, buy cheep bulk wormwood online or at an herb store. wormwood itself is totally legal. Now distilling genuine absinthe goes into bootlegging, which is definatly illegal. But why risk it, it tastes like crap and is NOT hallucinogenic? I guess if your into that whole novelty olde timey highs type thing.

I've had it, and I thought it tasted like crap. It was strong as hell, and I really couldn't drink too much cause the taste made me want to throw up. The bit that I did drink did give me like a "fish-eyes" kind of high. I think you need to drink alot, and I just couldn't keep anymore shots down.
