I'm noticing something that I find a little wierd.
There are some albums I really grow to love while I listen to them on headphones. Some I get hooked on in the car. Others are always in rotation when I'm listening around the house.
When I first listened to Year Zero (NIN) on my home speakers, I felt very neutral and leaning towards distaste for the album. This morning I am giving my headphones a go and find it a completely different experience. I listened to With Teeth a lot on headphones as well, so I don't know why I was surprised by this. I guess I hadn't really paid attention to this.

YES - was wondering the same thing last night - got a new MP3 player and was listeneing to a bunch of stuff that I really did not think I liked based on listening to it in the car

I like different music when I am walking around than when I am chilling on the couch, and other music for riding in the car. I think it is more surroundings than the speakers.
Car noise tends to drown out certain frequencies and home stereos lose/distort frequencies due to absorption/reflection by curtains, carpets, walls, etc. That's why earphones usually sound better unless you have a very good setup in the home/car.
Also, a lot of older stuff was MEANT to be listened to through stereo headphones.. try listening to Floyd that way, esp. Dark Side ;D
that was me last night! i love the way that leslie cabinet pulses back and forth through your head.
i agree with the mood thing, your not always in the mood to listen to headphones etc.
the music though (99% of the time) sounds best through a pair of GOOD headphones. in the studio tracks are mixed and all with phones. with phones you can catch more detail because you hear it the way it was intended to be heard with all of the panning and placement of the sounds. those things get lost in your average stereo (though studio monitors are a different story)
Headphones with a large subwoofer would be ideal for me. I need to feel the bass...
studio monitors with a sub are amazing. i recently recorded at a friends studio and he's got a sub in the control room. the monitors are great because they pan out sounds just like headphones and the sub is just nasty. the only problem is that shiz costs lots of $$$

Headphones just always feel more in the moment, stereo and car can be drowned out by someone around you or outside noises that distract you from the little things in songs that really make them better. Headphones amplify your musical senses to be able to pick up the little things that are a must in albums.
I'm a home stereo fan. It can cost bucks, needs to be set up correctly and adjusted to the environment but when it's right, it's RIGHT! You can feel the bass and practically see the spatial environment of the recording. It transcendant (expensive but transcendant.) I always buy discontinued models and such so you can get them for 1/2 price or less. Makes it semi-affordable, not as cheap as headphone but ...
spent 65 dollars on a pair of big bassy phillips headphones, great investment but the downside is its pretty hard to fall asleep listening to them bc u cant rest the side of ur head. pros and cons to all options, so ill take a mixture.
I have two earbud sized philips. one pair is a set of surround sound earbuds that surprisingly have great sound quality for such little things. They definitely sold me on philips headphones. The other pair is a behind-the-ear style that i used when i attempted to work out at the beginning of the year. That didn't last long.
(I carry my ipod everywhere, so compact headphones are a necessity.)

i have those exact ones and they rock. the ipod earbuds are a joke compared to the quality of those, great for going everywhere.
i want to get some nice bose noise cancelling ones at some point though for listening at home

me too, i am a bass head too(check the name) but i also love listening to stereo headphones with stuff like Dark Side and most Jimi Hendrix stuff. Hendrix does so much alyering in his songs of different guitar parts and they sound so much clearer through headphones.
