This is just a blanket discussion, as I just watched a video on Yahoo! Sports and if I ever saw Bob Margolis in person I'd kick him in the face.
I grew up, from the age of 10, racing motocross. Like, a lot. Traveled, went to nationals, was competitive in the pro women's ranks and held my own in the "boys" classes. I started when there were "powder puff" races as a joke and then more regular womens classes were added as I got older. I stopped when I went in to college. Unintentionally, it was too costly and I was on my own when I got out of school. I focused on my career, and now I would be more concerned about injuries.
But anyways, that's the short story.
So the girls that seem to always qualify for the Indy 500 are close to my heart. I know at least a part of the beasts they're battling. It's hard to get sponsors, hard to get people's trust, hard to perform consistently in the pressure cooker that it can be.
But then there's these tools that I don't even think have driven an Indy car declaring that "They don't think Danica will EVER win the Indy 500". That guy can kiss my big toe. Supposedly, because she's a girl, she'll always back off when fighting for that lower lane in a corner. Which I don't believe for a godd**n second. There are THREE Girls in the indy 500 starting position. That alone grants merit. But to just come out and slap them in the face that they can't even hope for what you KNOW they are working for, well that's just stupidity.
So we're okay if we stay and compete in our own ranks, but we're on your turf if we try to compete where there's always more money, more sponsors, more crowds, because the MEDIA makes it that way. Media like this tool at Yahoo! Sports named Bob Margolis. What a hack.
In a way, this is the one thing I'm glad to not deal with so much on a daily basis. When I was, it just made me stand up more for what I was capable of. But unfortunately, that doesn't get sponsors or people to think you deserve what you have. Because no matter what, they assume you got so far because you are a woman "and pretty good for a girl". I didn't want to run those stupid powder puff races when all my peers mothers were on their minibikes trying to make it up the biggest obstacle on the course. I wanted to work to compete with the guys. But being taken seriously was something you had to earn, and not something I got from everyone, even after some pretty serious accomplishments. Cuz I was still just good for a girl.
And the media can really piss me off sometimes.
(what got me worked up is currently on the Yahoo! front page.)

Somewhat off topic.. but a very good female friend of mine used to race motocross.. damn, shes awesome. Shes also the best driver I know of both sexes, has a REALLY nice porsche, and can rip a serious guitar solo... I think she is actually the devil

I think the media actually helps women in sports. Who would Michelle Wie and Danica Patrick be without the media? They wouldn't have the fan support or the opportunitys they do. I agree its likely Danica Patrick never wins the Indy 500, not because shes a woman, but just because shes not that good, regardless of her sex. For the time being a womans never going to be in the very elite of man's sport, just because of physical limits. They can surely be competitive, but they are still limited by a lack of testosterone. If a woman ever did rise to the top of a men's league, she would definatly get props from me though. I do think its possible that it could happen in racing, where their isnt as much of a physical advantage, and i would like to see it happen. If they're good enough to play, that should be all that matters.
yah i know it was off topic. Hence, the other tent.
sorry I was annoyed. it was late. and I had a rough day. comments like that put me over the edge, and for some reason I chose to vent here.
It is a more physical thing than you think though.
It was video so I could not link it. meh, i guess we'll see on indy day.
I don't attribute success or determination to testosterone.
The media attention doesn't hurt. But it's that the media attention has an asterisk by it that they only report because they think it's cute or trivial. Not because she's got as good a chance as anyone this weekend.

I guess you saw that show "1st and 10" on espn..I think it is Skip something who was saying how he thinks Patrick ( I think she is the Indy racer) has no skill at all and all that such and is just a sideshow for people to watch the Indy race. He was like a women will never win the Indy 500 and everyone around him was like just shut up...why is it that a woman in a mans sport cant get cred? she is playing that damn sport so she must be good at it..jeeze. sometime a woman will win the sport..get over it

she is in 3rd. I am in indy. They delayed the race for rain. Looking at the weather it will start up again. Indy rules say that the race can in after 100 laps. They have 113 the winner will go by what happens when they stop the race for the rain.
Patrick had problems in the rain. The race was called at around lap 166 the results are as follows: 1) Franchitti, 2) Dixon, 3) Castroneves, 4) Hornish, 5) Briscoe, 6) Sharp, 7) Scheckter, 8) Patrick, 9) Hamilton, 10) Meira.
I had marco andretti for my office pool (one of my co-workers is from indy).
As soon as andretti pitted and the announcers said they also removed part of the wing...
I jokingly said that oh, great, until his car goes airborne and dashes my dreams of office-pool winnings.
And that's exactly what happened. Oy.
I saw a replay of a pass Patrick made from the in-car. I don't care what people say, the girl can drive. Any announcer or reporter that says other wise can't seem to forget her gender. I think without the rain, she was making a very good play at the front of the pack.
I hate when it stops early on account of the rain.

I agree she is a good driver, for as young as she is she has a better record then most men. She finishes the races. That alone is not done by anyone. I think within the next few years you will see her win.

Something with her, but she never finishes off the races. She always qualifys high, stays in the front of the pack for like 1/2-3/4 of the race, then when i look at the final results she finishes like 9th or 10th. I think this just has to do with lack of experience, and it should come with time.
Did anyone else catch that one special ESPN had on the Linemins from the Jets sister? I cant remember his name but his sister is a starting lineman on her highschools varisty football team and they were showing clips and she was rocking people. I mean when youre 300 lbs no one looks that amazing but I mean she may even be the first female player in the NFL..now that would be nuts!!

Nick Mangold's little sister. And i hate to say it, but a woman will never play in the NFL based on her skills alone, itd be a publicity stunt. I have spent time around college and professional football players, and i'd say football has the biggest gap between men and women.
I remember when I used to wrestle in middle school, I had a meet with another school, which one escapes me... But one of my friends had to wrestle a young lady... and he got his ass tore up!!!

saw something like that happen too. went to one of my freinds wrestling tourneys (this was a WHILE back) and a kid from another team had to face a girl and man did that turn out bad for him...let's just say he got pinned rather quickly and trust me..he was trying
I'd def say that football and basketball probably have the largest gender gap, mainly because they depend so much on height and size.
When I was in high school, my school only had one soccer team. There were two girls that always played with the guys, and even made the 'all-star team' or whatever for the newspaper.
There are sports where women can rely more on speed, brains, and agility, rather than brute force.
I guess I just find it fascinating. It wasn't something I comprehended when I first started racing when I was 9, that I couldn't do as well as the guys some day. I always held my own but there was definitely a point where my male competitors just pulled away. It was kind of harsh to learn that I had limitations, but it was pushing them that kept me going. I was somewhat successful in the women's classes, but it was fighting for that middle-of-the-pack battle in the "boys" classes that kept me interested.
I always knew they were %#!%!@! when they saw the ponytail go by.

I don't think finishing in the top ten all the time is such a bad thing! Her first three Indy 500 finishes now are 4th, 8th, & 8th - far better than many of the 'legends' of the sport.

Definatly^, not at all. But to get to that elite level she has to finish off races is all im saying. I think it will come with time. Will she ever dominate like Schumacher? No, i dont think so. Will anyone? Probably not. And indigo, i definatly think that the women can stay in it up until the profresional ranks. Thats when the gap can become insurmountable. I'd love to see women step it up in mens sports, i think golf and racing are just waiting to be conquered, and possibly even tennis, although not with animals like Federer and Nadal at the top. I'm pretty confident Serena Williams could rank in the top 10 of mens tennis, and thats something id like to see in the future.
