so i just shot my first roll of 35mm slide film...ive got my processed slides now, is there anyway i can make prints from the slides?? what are my options from here? forgive my lack of knowledge, im VERY new to this species of film...
I send mine off to www.theslideprinter.com/ . They do a great job, but be prepared for some disappointments at first & don't automatically blame the lab.
Select just a few at first - don't send a whole roll to be printed. Prints will not look the same as the slide and it takes a while to get the feel for choosing which slides will translate well to prints. First, you definitely want a loupe and/or light box to look at the slides. A projector has too many variables affecting what you see (age of light bulb, whiteness of screen/wall, angle of projector to wall, distance to wall for projector and for your eyes, etc.) and so isn't a good tool to use for selecting slides to print.
Slide film doesn't have the contrast range that negative film does. When printed, this lack of contrast is magnified. Say you took a shot of a barn on the horizon on a slightly overcast day with a horse in shadow under a tree in the foreground. It may be the coolest slide, but you'll lose one of them when printed. Either the horizon will be washed out or the horse will be too dark too see. Communicate with the lab - it helps to put little post-its on them saying "print for horizon" or "print for horse".
...also helps to avoid as much contrast as possible when taking the pictures if you think you're going to want to print them. Cloudy days are a plus! Clear blue skies tend to come out very dark and unnatural - almost black sometimes.
Have fun with it and don't get discouraged. You can get fabulous prints from slides!

im a bit hesitant about sending my [best] slides across the country to be processed...have you or anyone you know had any trouble with them as far as losing slides or destroying them?

With them...no
The United States Postal Service is a whole different story...
I didn't read everyone's answers but here are your two best options: 1. Have 4x5 internegatives made, then go in the dark room to make your prints...it's expensive and you need to know how to print....but this will give you your best results....also I don't know where you are....this process is easy to do in NYC....probably really hard to find a lab for the internegs and a darkroom to use elsewhere....if you're near NY, I use Color Edge for processing/internegs and print my work at My Own Color Lab (it's not my place....though I used to work there...My Own is the name of the place)
2. Buy a scanner and make digital prints....this is more expensive at first but cheaper in the long run...plus it requires less technical know how.
