It's horrifying but, not very surprising.
If he takes this bullshit too far, W is going to make the country ripe for another revolution! It's scary as hell but, maybe it's necessary for our protection! If he/they push us too far, we will revolt! We will protect ourselves, our rights, our country, our way of life! The pendulum has been swinging pretty damn far to one one side for years now. If it goes much further, It WILL swing back....with a vengance! Maybe that's not a bad thing. Maybe it's even necessary. When the "Swift Boat Vets" are scared by this lunatic's actions, that scares me! Something and/or someone needs to stop him, plain and simple!

Agreed, not suprising. Quite bold though, maybe Bush realizes he's running out of time and power.
My cousin and I went to his most recent Inauguration with a sign that said Welcome to the 4th Reich. My cuz's words, not mine though I agreed with the concept of how closely the Patriot act resembled the Nazi regime burning down Parliament and seizing power. I never thought it would become such a reality.
Scariest part is how these things get done and don't even make the News. It's nothing but pet tips, Celebrity scandals and a quick rundown of the daily Inner City murders.

This is sufficiently vague as to allow the dissolving of Constitutional rule for just about any reason. And Republicans should remember that this will apply to all future Presidents including Dems (yes, even Hillary)
I totally agree with oatmeal on this one. If you all will remember this country was founded on voices of dissent. My fear is that this country is already to far gone for a revolution to even save it at this point.

I love america .....Bush gets hammered for not having any federal plan in place to curb violence and get resources mobilized when Katrina hit the gulf coast. Bush realizes that FEMA is uncapable of doing shit and we all know that. So he wants to take control during a NATIONAL EMERGENCY which the entire country gave him mass shit for not doing in the 1st place when Katrina happened . Me I want the gov't out of my life and don't want to rely on them for shit. However enough people cried and complained and said BUSH u should have done more u should have stepped in and taken control. Guess what u ask and u shall recieve.
The more u ask for the gov't help the more they will be happy to assist. DEMS prefer more gov't programs.....republicans favor less gov't programs u make the choice all I know is we need a washington OUTSIDER to clean this shit up!!!! (debit cards for all)
this bill allows him to take control of basically anything he wants in a very broad definition of what an "emergency" is. Basically he could stub his toe and call it an emergency, and take complete control...even of the private sector! And WITHOUT any type of government okaying his "emergency".
Katrina could have been handled differently and he had the power to do more. But the LA area is still rebuilding, and the government you are willing to let take any charge it can so you don't have to handle it has spent 592 million on a self-sustaining embassy in the heart of baghdad. it doesn't add up.

Wait one minute. Under Clinton FEMA was a model of efficiency, helping disaster victims quicker than any time in our history. It was only when Bush appointed a failed horse show judge that the administration collapsed. Conservatives always say gov't can't do anything right and then go out of their way to prove it.
Bush get hammered for staying on vacation for 5 days. And for letting hospital ships stay in the Gulf for days with no orders to help. And not positioning supplies and equipment before the storm. And for not even watching coverage of the disaster to keep up with the situation (They had to make a DVD of the news coverage for him to watch on Thursday so he could catch up.) Or at least appointing an idiot to take charge.
The problem with Republican/Corporate Philosophy is that they believe private industry will solve everything. They therefore issue contracts and then stop. No one makes sure the water actually gets to the victims, or the trailers get to N.O. or the infrastructure actually gets built in Iraq. Once the money is spent, let the coporations save the world.
Bush has actually taken more money and done less. And this actually reinforces the conservative belief in "bad Gov't". It's a no lose situation , unless you're an average citizen in a disasterous situation, depending on the gov't for assistance.
None of us ask for for a police state. We just want simple competence. Bush apparently does not know the difference.

As far as gov't failing at everything, that's just a Rush Limbaugh talking point. Gov't can do many thing well especially in areas that are too large to be handled privately; ie. Rural electricfication, Health (polio vaccine), miltary, Interstate system, DISASTER RELIEF.
Your assersion that if you ask ANYTHING of gov't you have to accept everything is strange. Gov't has a role, as does private industry, and individuals. I am just as upset about corporations overstepping their role in society and invading my private life. And I would be upset if my neighbor overstepped his and started invading my privacy. We need to make sure gov't and everyone else is kept within the bounds of their role.

Since then, Haliburton and Blackhawk Security have been rolling in dough from both Iraq AND New Orleans. FEMA prisoner of war internment camps have been built and reinforced all over this country. There has been a definite $ grab, a huge increase in the power of the presidency, and conflicts of interest abound. All the while war profiteers bleed this economy for generations to come. Fear has been elevated to an all time frenzy, allowing the most unaccountable government in american history. True reds are leaving the party every day. But the duped are screaming the talking points loudest so they don't feel stupid for choosing to support these chicken($hit)hawks. Just wait 'til more of the troops resign and get a chance to talk.

So then, rather than give it away due to the fact that "he has more than he could ever spend", you would prefer he keep it? I don't understand how he can be "selfish" yet give away millions and millions of dollars.
Whatever the reason, I don't think you can fault him for giving money to help others. In fact, I'm sure his legal team could devise ways he could give his money to "charity" when it really just serves to benefit him and his friends.

Actually, I do respect your opinion. I've told you that several times. It just seems like the only time you post anything is when you jump into a conversation and start spouting off your opinion in a very dismissive and condescending way. You don't ever just disagree. You tell everyone how and why they are wrong. It's not ever a discussion with you. It's a mission to convert people to your way of thinking by trivializing theirs, plain and simple.

Oatmeal u are a good guy and if u really did stop a burgular then we need more people like u in the country that is for sure......it just gets old hearing the same old B.S. about how BUSH is at fault and planned the 911 attacks. ...FYI the reason I feel so strongly and haven't posted in awhile is b/c my ass was over in the middle east setting up communication networks to help out our men and women live another day. Trust me the terrorist over there would be insulted to hear we think Bush planned the 911 attacks....they don't need our help they are ready and willing. this crap has been going on longer then BUSH has been in office but some only point to the current administration.
