We are thinking that we may take a trip to Holland next year instead of going to Bonnaroo.
Obviously a vacation like this takes a good deal of planning if you want to do it right, so we are starting the process now.
Has anyone here ever been? If so, do you have any advice or tips?
Anything regarding timing, funding, must-see/must-dos, legal FAQs, accomodations, travel, re-entry ( ), etc... would help. Anything would be helpful and much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I visited Amsterdam 10 years ago. Had a blast. No problem with the language, they all speak English and love doing so. We stayed in a small hotel by the Rijksmuseum. Great location. Expect tiny rooms and no air condition. And bring a wash cloth. For some reason they do not believe in them over there. Public transportation is awsome. Do not rent a car! Be sure and do a bike ride thru the city. My husbands favorite thing to do was count the number of female bike riders with no underwear!
went to Amsterdam several years ago - toured the Holland countryside - great place, friendly open people. Like Druid said expect small rooms and no air and in some small hotels you have to share bathrooms. We spent 2 weeks and toured all of Holland on trains - be sure to get out of Amsterdam and see the countryside - coffee shops everywhere - get a good guide book for the basics - you'll love it - went in April - weather great but cool

I have a friend that went there this past spring and the pictures were just stunning! I'll have to ask her what she did/where she went and let you know, but have a good time it's such a beautiful place it seems...

Thanks for the responses. Jam In The Dam sounds pretty good but, it being in March will probably make it difficult to do. I've always wanted to go to the Cannabis Cup but, I've heard that it gets a little too crowded. I guess that we've got plenty of time to decide what to do. We've got a lot of cash to save and I still have to learn "funtional" Dutch. (i know they speak English ,but it just seems right)
I was there in May/June of 2001. Amsterdam is pretty crazy. I found that alot of the locals don't really appreciate Americans, they can be kinda rude. The city can be a b!tch to navigate as well. We stayed in Rotterdam, which is an amazing city, and an hour or two train ride to Amsterdam. We stayed in Amsterdam one night in a hostel. I really enjoyed just taking the train into Amsterdam for day trips rather than staying there. De Hauge is also a very beautiful city and they have a really nice beach, if you go when it's warm. Rotterdam and De Hauge have a much less touristy feel to them, and the locals there are really nice and helpful. There are a ton of really nice smaller towns to visit as well. A ton of history there. We also went to the Pinkpop fest when we were there and that was a blast. It's in south Holland at the end of May every year, and it's actually quite large. I think there were 70,000 people there in 2001. The moral of the story is.......don't spend all your time in Amsterdam, cause there is a ton more to see and do in Holland that, IMO, is alot more fun than spending most or all of your time in smoke shops.
if you're really friendly to the locals (which we were) they'll think your Canadian (which they did) and we didn't tell them we weren't - seems like a lot of American tourists are rude - as for the Cannibas Cup a friend went and didn't like the vibe
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

I've been reading-up on Burning Man and now I'm thinking that would be the way to go. It's always sounded great but, after really looking into it, It sounds even more AMAZING than I had thought! We couldn't do/afford it this year but, by next year we would be more than ready. Any stories, thoughts, preferances, expriences or opinions?

My goal is to go to Burning Man within the next 5 years, it can't be this year, I am not sure about next year, but the following year it may work out... I've wanted to go to Burning Man for a WHILE
I agree with Danbird that it is worth it to spend time out of Amsterdam while visiting the Netherlands. I studied abroad in Maastricht a few years ago and spent a lot of time up in Amsterdam. I thought it was a really cool city with a lot of great cultural things to take in.. not just hitting up coffee shops. If you can, make a trip to Maastricht for a day or 2... it's about 3 hours south of Amsterdam in between belgium and germany. It's an awesome cool town.. it's a lot like Amsterdam, but without all of the touristy stuff. I found that all of the locals were really cool - my friends and I tried to be respectful of the culture and not come off as 'dumb americans' so I think that made a huge difference. Also - you don't have to speak any dutch at all to get along there... i think i learned maybe 3 words while i was there. We would attempt to speak it in the begining but the Dutch would speak to us in english, so that was great. I would go back/move there in a heart beat.
